My friend and I were looknig around for a vegetarian restaurant to try, and after eating at great vegetarian restaurants like VeggieSF and Life Cafe we decided to give The Herbivores a try. My friend and I were looknig around for a vegetarian restaurant to try, and after eating at great vegetarian restaurants like VeggieSF and Life Cafe we decided to give The Herbivores a try. And what a mistake that was!!

They have a sad excuse for a vegetarian menu, which is simply pasta or rice (or other carbs) mixed with vegetables and that's it. The appetizer menu is all food that is already vegetarian to begin with, so there's not much imagination or excitement there.

We ordered the Alice in Wonderland Set, which was a 3-course set meal with a rum-based frozen cocktail. We also ordered taro fries and spring rolls on the side.

Appetizer: Grilled zucchini, eggplant, and mushroom with salad leaves
Score: 2/10
The vegetables were not properly cooked as they were still raw, and there was almost no seasoning (salt, pepper, or otherwise). There were two salad leaves placed on top of some quinoa that had mayonnaise on them, but even that was tasteless.

Main course: Mixed mushroom pasta in a butter white wine sauce
Score: 1/10
This was literally the most disgusting restaurant dish I have ever put in my mouth. Firstly, the mushrooms looked like they came out of a jar or can. They looked slimy and oily and did not seem to be cooked with the pasta as they were all placed on top. I'm not sure what they meant by butter white wine sauce because what we got was a plate of DRY pasta that had no moisture or seasoning in it at all; it was absolutely disgusting and unpalatable. My friend and I used the Thai sweet chili sauce served with our spring rolls to give our disgusting pasta some flavour. The pasta itself (linguine) was raw and NOT al dente, and when I notified our waitress, she had the nerve to tell me that linguine had that kind of hard and crunchy texture. That ruse may work on others who are less culinary inclined, but I've eaten in Michelin starred restaurants around the world, and I know what linguine's texture should be.

Dessert: Mixed fruit tart
Score: 7/10
The tart was the only acceptable part of the set meal, and I'm not even sure it was house-made. The tart shell was browned only at the top, and still blond around the sides and bottom. The creme patissiere had a slight hint of lemon, but was not sweet enough overall. The best part of the tart was the fresh fruit on top, and they did not even cook that. Kudos to whoever bought the fruit that day.

Side: Taro fries
Score: 7/10
I'm a strong believer of "if it's deep-fried, you can't go wrong", and this was definitely the case with the taro fries. This was my first time eating taro fries, so I had no expectations. I could taste taro, but the fries were not crispy enough. In addition, someone had been a little lazy when frying and allowed multiple fries to stick together to form large conjoined fries. It was also unreasonably salty, but this turned out to be a saving grace because we ate it in conjunction with the bland appetizer and the two dishes evened each other out.

Side: Asian roll
Score: 8/10
Once again, deep-fried. The spring rolls were crispy and seasoned well, but the filling was not special in any way. In fact, after dipping it in the Thai sweet chili sauce they served alongside it, I couldn't even taste the spring roll anymore.

Cost: $400 for 2 people at lunch time. RIP OFF.
題外話/補充資料: In summary, DO NOT EAT HERE. The food is abysmal and is not worth the hefty price tag that accompanies it.
