We enjoyed "Those Were the Days" Dim Sum All-You-Can-Eat at Golden Bauhinia Cantonese Restaurant this Saturday. We found out this promotion from reading "Headline" and were enticed to try their yellow dumpling with metal clap (灌湯餃) for nostalgia. From this all-you-can-eat dim sum menu, there were 30 selections from 4 categories: Steamed, Pan-fired/Deep-fried and Baked, Steamed Rice in Lotus Leaf, and Dessert to be cooked to order. For the four of us, we ordered 29 dishes and yes, we finished them
We really liked their Shrimp Dumpling with Bamboo Shoot•笋尖蝦餃皇 which was juicy and crispy. Siu Mai (Steamed Minced Pork Dumpling with Black Mushroom)•手切香菇燒賣 was rich with mushroom and pork aroma.
The two dishes that needed a bit of work were Preserved Vegetable with Pork Tripe in Pepper•咸菜胡椒豬肚 and Steamed Squids in Curry Sauce•咖喱蒸土魷. The former needed more spices and pepper to take away the porky smell while the dried squids lacked flavors.
As for the desserts, flavor could be richer but fit today’s less-oil-less-sweet standard. Nevertheless, the Steamed Sesame Paste Bun•香滑麻茸包 was still outstanding comparing to the good old days.
We also tried Summer Egg Flakes Agar Agar•蛋花蓮大菜糕, Fried Dough Twists with Shredded Coconut•椰香脆麻花 which was crispy although personally I would prefer syrup rather than honey, but the Dessert Delight of the day, Sweet Mung Bean Soup•綠豆沙 unfortunately was the flop of the day with coconut in the mixture.
We regret that we didn’t try this Steamed Diced Chicken and Octopus in Lotus Leaf•鱆魚雞粒荷香籠仔蒸飯 as our last order as we were seriously full.
Overall, we were pleased with this meal as the food was generally tasty, service good and the interior was spacious and comfortable. For only $198 plus service charge, we spent over two hours there. What a bargain!
