Tamago-En is an interesting restaurant that is all about eggs. Originally from Singapore, they serve various Japanese style meals using Okinawa eggs. The menu even said the eggs were so fresh, you could eat them raw.Boyfriend and I were in Yata to buy some groceries before heading home to make dinner as there is now no more dine in service after 6 PM. We decided to have lunch in the mall and I thought of this place as I always wanted to try it. They have another location in Mong Kok but that one
Boyfriend and I were in Yata to buy some groceries before heading home to make dinner as there is now no more dine in service after 6 PM. We decided to have lunch in the mall and I thought of this place as I always wanted to try it. They have another location in Mong Kok but that one is always so popular, we can never get a table. But the branch here is much quieter. It's also a lot larger. The decor was cute with a few tables that looked like eggs and the color scheme was like an egg.
Menu is in English and Chinese and you pay on your way out. They have an a la carte menu along with a seasonal menu. All mains can be upgraded to a set that includes a salad and miso soup or vegetable soup for $15.
Pineapple Paradise ($38). I decided to try the seasonal drink. This was pretty good. It was packed with a lot of pineapple and sweet pineapple juice mixed with soda. It seemed they added more juice than soda which is how I like it.
Five Kind Rolled Egg Omelette Skewer ($68). From front to back: Crabmeat, Cod Roe and Mayo, Ikura and Salmon Flake, Seaweed Paste, Tomato Sauce. We shared this appetizer as I had seen a lot of photos on here trying it. The omelette was fluffy and not overly sweet. It was also larger than we had expected. The toppings complimented well but honestly, I loved the one with the tomato the most. It was such a classic combination.
Chicken and Egg Don ($78). Added $15 to upgrade into a set that included a salad and soup which is what boyfriend did.
The chicken and egg don was quite good. The amount of rice was generous but not too much that one couldn't finish it. The eggs were a bit on the raw side as some of the white was still transparent. The chicken meat moist and tender.
The salad was fresh and the sesame dressing was not too salty and had a heavy sesame taste.
For the soup, you can choose miso or minestrone. Boyfriend chose the minestrone and it came in a cute little cup. The soup had a rich tomato base with a number of mixed vegetables in it.
Tamago-En Signature TKP Cold Pasta with Prawn, Mentai and Raw Egg ($92). I wanted something cold so chose something from their seaonal menu again. It was similar to another pasta but this was cold. It arrived on a meringue cloud with a raw yolk on top. If you are not into eating raw eggs, than perhaps shy away from this. But I thought it was lovely. Mixed with the cold pasta, it became like a sauce. The prawn was fresh and large. I think they could have added more mentaiko. But otherwise a refreshing summer dish.
While we were eating, they started to distribute an afternoon tea set menu. I saw they offered pancakes and boyfriend agreed to give it a try. All tea sets come with a drink.
Fuwa Fuwa Pancake with Pineapple and Tapioca ($68). There are several toppings you can choose from but boyfriend was curious about the tapioca pearls. Boba on pancakes? And it worked. The boba was chewy but not too hard or too soft. The pancakes were topped with a very sugary sweet grilled pineapple and whipped cream. The whipped cream was delicious as they actually flavored it a bit with some vanilla and sugar unlike most places where they seem to forget that and give you bland whipped cream or something from a can. The pancakes themselves were excellent. One of the better ones I've had in Hong Kong as you can really taste the intense egg taste. It was a bit too soft, probably due to not enough flour? But it was still very good. Even boyfriend agreed and he always hates souffle pancakes.
The food was a lot better than I expected. I expected it to be mediocre and only geared as a theme. So, many times have I gone to restaurants like this and been disappointed with the food. I was pleasantly surprised here. Even boyfriend was surprised and he always dislikes places like this. Would definitely be back.
