While Das Gute tries hard to disguise itself as a Japanese bakery, the similarities of offerings with the rest of A1 bakeries make it a no-brainer that they belong to the same parent*. Most of the pastries are of Japanese style, with European variety or Hong Kong ingredients occasionally getting an appearance. Of a few items that I tried:Maple Raisin Caramel Bread 楓蜜提子包–Very very dry and crumbly, with barely noticeable maple aroma.Chiffon Cake 雪芳蛋糕– Another DRY cake. It’s not soft, it's not
While Das Gute tries hard to disguise itself as a Japanese bakery, the similarities of offerings with the rest of A1 bakeries make it a no-brainer that they belong to the same parent*. Most of the pastries are of Japanese style, with European variety or Hong Kong ingredients occasionally getting an appearance. Of a few items that I tried:
Maple Raisin Caramel Bread 楓蜜提子包–Very very dry and crumbly, with barely noticeable maple aroma.
Chiffon Cake 雪芳蛋糕– Another DRY cake. It’s not soft, it's not fluffy, and it didn’t even taste nice. The only good thing was the packaging, which wasn’t edible.
Cinnamon Roll – Again, the roll itself was dry and a bit tough to chew, though the flavor was fine (but lacking cinnamon taste)
Cream Cheese Brioche – The best of the bunch because the cream cheese filling was moist. The bread on the outside (nothing related to brioche at all) was also on the dry side.
The most miserable item – BAGELS! Absolutely the wrong texture and in no way do they resemble authentic bagels. THESE ARE NOT BAGELS. I repeat, THESE ARE NOT BAGELS (sorry I am a bit irritated by these fake "bagels") Go to Press Room for brunch and ask for H&H bagels imported from New York. Now we are talking bagels.
If I were to judge Das Gute based on the items that I tried, it will be a crying face. But they have plenty of other cakes and pastries that I haven't tried. I will give them the benefit of the doubt and hence an OK.
* Although the first shop of A1 was in Osaka, the A1 Bakery in Hong Kong has completely been localized and hence it was acknowledged as from Hong Kong.
