Steamed rice roll is a classical food in Hong Kong where you can have the plain one with sweet and chili sauce; sprinkled with spring onion and dried shrimps; or wrapped with different kinds of meat such as Chinese BBQ pork or minced beef.

One day, when I was looking for an eatery for afternoon tea in To Kwa Wan, I spot this “Hong Kong Steamed Roll” which was off from the main street. Attracted by the claimed made-to-order rice rolls, I walked-in to give a try. Apart from rice rolls, they also serve a few dim sums, steamed rice and rice congee.

All of them are priced at the low side not exceeding $20 each, not easy to find anywhere in town now.

a) Steamed Radish Pudding ($9) – 8/10

Options of steamed or pan fried were available and I opted for the steamed one. Thick cut of white radish could be found in the pudding. The density and texture was just right for the steamed type.

b) Rice Rolls with Pig’s Liver ($14) – 7/10

I was not certain if the rice rolls were really made-to-order as the dish was not steaming hot when delivered to the table. The texture of the rice rolls were too stretchy rather than the expected softness. The pig’s liver was not tender too.

c) Soy Milk ($7) – 10/10

In the shop I didn’t see those beverage dispensers with a tank of soy milk or plum juice commonly found in most rice congee eateries. Instead, they offered bottled soy milk made by third party manufacturer. I had never heard of the brand before but to my surprise the soy milk was exceptionally rich in soy bean and moderately sweetened. At this price definitely I could not find another bottle in 7-Eleven.
