Friends who work outside Central are usually reluctant to pick dining options in Central and used to think that restaurants there are either too high-end or too cliché for gatherings. AMAZAKE is not hard to find if you know where the famous club, LEVELS, is. Lunch sets are priced reasonably (within the area) at around $150-200, nonetheless late night bites are surprisingly good for value especially when the spending is more for dinner time.

Well matched with its pricing, AMAZAKE is simply in a casual, friendly setting that welcomes and fits for various kinds of meet-ups – it can be for business chit-chats around the bar area, dinner with friends at the dining tables, or late bites before parties. Items on the a la carte menu are highly varied, ranging from snacks to main courses which can easily fit and satiate different customer groups.

A little bit of alcohol is indispensable to shift us from the weary working mode to party mode. Sakura cocktails are featured in the recent promotion, apparently being more appealing to sakura-addicted girls than boys!

We picked two of them on the menu and mine was simply named “Sakura”, the bright pink colour of which was attributed by the dominating cranberry juice. These drinks look so similar to those at the Common Room (the smoothie cocktails), which is a restaurant under the same restaurant group, no wonder.

Not especially craving for carbohydrates, we ordered this newly launched DIY sushi platter which let customers wrap their own roll. This is absolutely for fun like bringing “Cooking Mama” to reality.

Apart from pieces of seaweed, clusters of ingredients include fatty tuna and salmon cubes, and of course, rice. Together with cucumber slices, it is not difficult to manage the wrap. Ingredients were fresh, but admittedly, fun of creating your own wrap overwhelmed the experience instead of enjoying the sashimi cubes.

Having our own cocktails, some of us asked for crunchy snacks. As a healthier alternative of potato, sweet potato salted with shiso (紫蘇) and garlic was fried and accompanied by wasabi aioli mayo. Basically with higher sugar content, wasabi aioli mayo offered a garlic and spicy highlight to balance off and added a slight Japanese twist to the western frying style.

Simply a recommended and quite a signature dish at AMAZAKE, the sushi rolls filled with fatty tuna, uni and ikura as toppings were delicately placed like a blossomed flower in a platter. These three ingredients were strong in aroma, but remained in balanced taste given the accompany of sweet shrimp, the texture of which contributed cohesiveness of ingredients in general and the flavor of which was less dominating but just to give a sweet highlight.

What came next were just two relatively common streetfood, one being pork dumplings and another being tayoyaki (octopus balls). Pork dumplings, in addition to the sweet potato fries above, were nicely fried and went well with the cocktails.

Takoyaki isn’t common to be found in Japanese eateries. Being a kind of streetfood, $68 for 6 pieces is a good deal and in an appropriate portion to fit the nearly satiating appetite.

With the outer getting tanned in takoyaki sauce and seasoned with mayonnaise and the inner filled with diced octopus in the flour-based batter, this dish of Japanese snacks was successful in wining most hearts.

Guys who demand more on carbohydrates pick the AMAZAKE pizza, which was topped with melted cheese, flying fish roe and salmon slices. It was in a well-expected taste and portion, though not being that special. The pie was slightly overdone which made the taste a little bitter due to the roasted part.

$230/head for a decent place and late night bites is a reasonable spending in the heart of the LKF area. Portion of snacks is suitable for sharing and the amount of our dishes can in fact satiate 5-6 petite girls, giving an even lower per head spending. Unlike restaurants that you can easily identify the market segment one is targeting to, AMAZAKE is successful in getting a firm hold onto the untapped and vaguely defined, medium-priced market by gathering liquor, Japanese dishes and snacks in a good mix.
