As a gallivant traveller, I stand firm in my belief that nowhere in the world has a better harbour view than Hong Kong's. Wildfire at the Peak Tower has long been my favorite chill-out place, but foreign visitors to Hong Kong should crave for Chinese cuisine instead of pizza which is in contrast "foreign" to Hong Kongers. "Lu Feng" which features old Hong Kong dishes amid a list of modern options should work for foreign visitors and locals at a surprisingly affordable price given the prevalent pricing of seaview restaurants. With around $250-300 per head, one can enjoy a fulfilling Chinese dinner at this great height.

The restaurant occupies two floors, having different vibes but same menu and pricing. One can reach the upper floor through a wooden staircase, with old photos of the Peak hanging around like a memory lane. Vibes can't be any more classy with retro-style lighting, floor tiles and warm wood details. The setting depicts high-class restaurants and teahouse like Luk Yu (陸羽) in the old days.

Apart from round tables hosting 6-8 customers, there are rectangular ones resembling that of old cafes. A more casual setting around a smaller table keeps us closer, though one has to forgo scenery by the windows.

To exert the dual-purpose of coming here, we picked a round table just beside the unobstructed french windows.

Vibes at the lower floor are on the cosy and casual side, thoughtfully created by decor and props that make it like a demo zone at the history museum instead of a restaurant! The ambiance is intricately constructed to resemble a dining scene at Daipaidongs (大排檔) by putting fake metal gates of stalls and advertisement boxes beside and above the tables.

There is also a dim sum bar which differentiates the two floors and lets you stay closer to the kitchen. Dim sum is of course one of the Canton food signatures, though they are only available before 6pm daily.

While foreigners may find these more fascinating than locals, I am surprised to see my childhood toy at Chinese restaurants - the paper wrap of chopsticks! Somehow due to environmental friendliness, most restaurants don't adopt paper packing to chopsticks anymore. Thumbs up for this level of details even on the tableware.

If you have no idea on what to order, dinner sets may help. We deem the pricing quite affordable and reasonable even as locals, since it is just $150-400/head.

It isn't at all expensive to go for a la carte options. Most dishes are under $200 (except seafood items which are always more expensive), the pricing is highly comparable to a decent local Chinese restaurant in my neighbourhood. Given the prime location of the Peak, dishes are surprisingly not marked-up in the eyes of locals. We decided to go for a la carte options as we locals know the menu really well and select worth-trying dishes that aren't really common elsewhere.

First up, we opt for an appetiser of clean and assertive flavour. Foreign visitors may find this intriguing as it is part of jelly fish. Basically colourless and translucent, however marinated in mustard sauce and sesame oil which gives a yellowish colouring, slices of jelly fish are decadent and crunchy. The surprise is that they serve the "mushroom head" of jelly fish instead of its tentacles (ie. 海蜇頭) which is the most crunchy part of the creature. Seasonings applied give a right balance, though we in fact expect a little bit of spiciness.

I can assert that not all locals have tried this traditional Hong Kong dish, a creation in the older days where citizens couldn't even afford siu-mei (Chinese roasted meat). Chicken Liver, lean pork and lard were unwanted materials back then, thus roasted like siu-mei and pretended roasted "chicken" which in fact didn't contain chicken (just liver).

$98 for four pieces of this is a super good deal! Glossy in its honey coat, one piece per head is enough to satiate and munch on. Make sure to consume it vertically, having three layers in your mouth at the same time. The taste is truly unique, with aroma of lard balancing off the lean texture of pork and giving a smooth finish. Not all locals fancy livers as well, but this is worth a try as this is a classic old dish that cannot be easily found in modern chinese eateries.

You may deem these as "pork nuggets" with finely chopped lotus root. Scrumptious just like chicken nuggets, they are fried to a golden finish evenly to give an alluring aroma that arrives at your nostril before your taste buds ever realise.

Density and thickness is just right to allow the interior to remain juicy and bouncy. It makes a perfect match to beer given its divine fried food nature just like any bar food.

Seeing the word "2pax" and aiming for a mere sip, the soup turns out to be much larger and is definitely bigger than a 2-people sharing portion. Together with the ingredients like pig's lung and fish maw, it can feed 5 people for 2 bowls each.

Comparing with the same traditional soup elsewhere, almond taste isn't the most outstanding one, but I appreciate the generous amount of ingredients that further prove its value for money.  Bold flavours of the soup is given by the vast amount of fish maw which is rich in protein. This is the most generous dish throughout the meal that both the quality and portion surprise us.

Adventurous gourmets can go for numbness of Sichuan dishes like this, with groupa fillets fried and soaked in thick chilli oil. Level of spiciness can be customised, and we picked the medium level to cater most of us. Although this isn't a Canton dish, it is made up to standard if comparing to restaurants specialising in Sichuan dishes like Qi Nine Dragons.

Undoubtedly being spicy and oily, groupa fillets are cooked just right in texture, which remain intact with flesh after frying and cooking. As a truly spice lover, I don't find my tongue too numbed but one of my friends orders a cold drink as she can't stand the spiciness.

In contrast with the generous portion of soup, this dish of beef ribs brings a little bit of disappointment, though texture and taste lives up to our expectation. This doesn't contain essence of Hong Kong food, just that it is ordered to satisfy beef cravings. I would say that it is more of a Thai style dish, with pepper cubes dolloped on ribs that have been disassociated with the core bone. Juicy and tender texture of ribs still moves us despite a lower value for money.

To balance off the greasiness of meat, a dish of greens must not be missed. A simple yet pleasing dish of soft baby leaves in fish soup wraps all main dishes up. The fish soup is nearly without any traces of oil which cleanses and delights our palates. While all other dishes are all charismatic and complex in flavours, a plain dish of veggies works the best to be the finale.

For desserts, we ordered Black Sesame Rolls 香滑芝麻卷 ($32) and Steamed Xinjiang Jujube Cakes 新疆棗皇糕 ($42). Sesame roll is unique and is disappearing among instant street snacks you can possibly find. Resembling the structure of traditional films (before the digital age), we locals call it as "film rolls" and I used to unroll it layer by layer in my childhood. Soft and gentle in texture and taste, sesame aroma is released even in between the layers as sesame paste is spotted. It is intricately worked out instead of oily thick "films" that I have had before.

For steamed date cakes which are also layered though horizontally, it is worth a try despite its common appearance in Chinese restaurants elsewhere. A hint of sourness well balances off the natural sweetness of dates.

With an interesting contrast of modern Hong Kong harbour view out there and the retro-style decor and food here, we have a fulfilling meal both to the palate and palette. As a traveller, I encountered pitfalls of high-end seaview restaurants serving sub-standard food and know it so well that what makes me down wasn't really about disappointment on food, but the waste of time and appetite that I can possibly spend on better ones. Finally here comes a reasonably priced restaurant that I can bring my foreign friends again for the scenery and Chinese food!
