Love to try out afternoon teas in town with my BFF and to have our girls talk. This time, it was the new place in Hong Kong. The butterfly room of the newly open rosewood hotel. I was a bit late, so the savoury plate was already on the table waiting for me. It’s not a typical stack but still a stack, with 6 x 2 savouries pieces of a mouthful size. This was as expected. I was a bit late, so the savoury plate was already on the table waiting for me. It’s not a typical stack but still a stack, with 6 x 2 savouries pieces of a mouthful size. This was as expected. The taste was just fair. The smoked salmon was just smoked salmon with the salmon caviar but too salty. The one looked like a cherry was foie gras with cherry jelly on top. It was not impressive. Compared to a similar one from the Drawing Room of St Regis, this one was a looser. The truffle tart was the best one among all while I’m actually not a truffle fan. 🙃
Before I actually touched the savoury, the Elegant surprise was served. So what am I supposed to eat first? I’d love an introduction. Anyway, i try the ‘surprise’ first which was a multi coloured sandwich with tomato, pepper and avocado between layers. It tasted weird in overall. They just didn’t match. Sorry.
After we finished the savoury, the scones and the mini Madeleine cakes were served, with home made cream, strawberry jam and mandarin jam on side. It was surprising in a nice way the scone was very hot in general. The cream melt in no time on the scone. I later found the plate was heated as well. 👍🏻 after these, I almost got full.
Next, a waiter pull over the pastry trolley at our table. We were offered to choose two or three pieces from all the choices. Well I came for tasting. I would of coz chose as much as I can. I got the finger bread with fresh fig inside, the pistachio eclair and the apple pie. First of all I have to say I didnt like this kind of arrangements. Besides the tastes of foods, we care about the delicacy. I didn’t enjoy cutting the pastry on my own in order to share. The pieces simply fell apart when I cut! It’s definitely not good if I shared the afternoon tea with someone not very close to me. About the taste, they are not impressive. The pistachio eclair was too sweet that the pistachio flavour was overwhelmed. The apple pie was a bad one. Worst part was the very tough tart base.
Last was the confectionery trolley which was dedicated to chocolate. We were offer to choose a slice of a cake and two small other pieces. We chose the dark forest cake and two small cups of mousse (so we didn’t have to share clumsily). The dark forest cake fell on the plate and looked smashed. I have to emphasise I didn’t want that.
Looking at the amount of food offered with this price, it’s a good bargain but the whole experience missed the elegance and exquisiteness. The service has not reached the level of a fine dining. For example, The teapots were placed randomly instead of my tea next to me and the other next to my friend. There are rooms for improvement .
