The fiancée and I were looking for a place to have brunch at on a weekend and since Layback opens at 2pm and we had prior engagements then, it was just perfect. With all the rave reviews this place has and with them serving soft shell crab burgers, we’re in and booked a table via the app for 2:30pm.Fast forward to 2:20pm, we headed up the building and entered the restaurant. Upon entering, the first thing I noticed about the place was how dainty and rundown it was and everything just felt dirty;

Upon entering, the first thing I noticed about the place was how dainty and rundown it was and everything just felt dirty; the floor felt sticky and icky, dust accumulating on the fixtures, the leatherette on the seats cracked and peeled off.
So we entered and there was a couple at a table in the corner but there weren’t any staff around. There was someone in the kitchen but she didn’t bother to come out to greet us or show us to a table, so we picked one out ourselves. We were sitting there waiting for someone to maybe come round from the outside as they had tables outside on a terrace, but a lot to our dismay, no one did. 15 minutes later, the lady in the kitchen finally noticed that we there and said in the most non-chalant tone in Cantonese that the waitress will be in in a few minutes, came out of the kitchen, when out to the terrace grabbed the menus and threw it on the table, “that wasn’t very nice” I told my fiancée. At this point we were starving and were debating whether we should stay or leave but with the rave reviews that this place has, we had to try it out, especially the soft shell crab burgers.
10 minutes after that, a lady with a box of cake arrived, I thought she was with the couple in the corner table as she headed in that direction but no, she went to the table beside the couple, set down the box of cake on the table and proceeds to pick up a notepad and a pen to take our orders. She took the other couple’s order first then ours. At this point, it was around 2:45pm, some 25 minutes after we set foot in the restaurant and I said “this soft shell crab better be good.” It took them another 20 minutes to get our drinks ready which was nothing to write home about. The fiancée ordered an iced hazelnut latte and I had the caramel chocolate smoothie and both were terrible. They tasted like syrup with a little bit of aroma to depict hazelnut and caramel. It tasted fake.
10 minutes after that, our food arrived. It looked nothing like a burger; the buns used were bagels. Yup, that’s right, bagels, with the hole in the middle. Not good. The first thing I did was to take a piece of the soft shell crab to see how it was and it was cold. Well, not really cold but it was barely above room temperature, probably around 40 degrees Celsius. I thought it was the tips so I went into the middle of the burger to see if it was hotter but nope, same thing. Checked with the fiancée, same thing, the soft shell crab was barely above room temperature.
Some people may have had a better experience with this place but ours was definitely not.
