To be fair to the other users who gave a “Good” for this restaurant, I did not try dinner. I only had dim sum at about 2:00 p.m. The seafood in the tanks looked fresh and healthy and the fried noodles ordered by other tables looked ok.Tons of photos of HK celebrities including “Choi Lan” were posted outside the dodgy looking entrance. Tons of photos of HK celebrities including “Choi Lan” were posted outside the dodgy looking entrance. I was quite surprised at the amount of persons inside the restaurant and I had to wait for about 10 minutes. The tables are set pretty close to each other and it’s not that comfortable.
I ordered “冰鎮苦瓜Chilled Bitter Melon”, “籮蔔糕Turnip Cake”, “蝦蛟Shrimp Dumpling”, “鹵水大腸Soy sauce marinated pig intestine”, “蟹粉小籠包Crab roe Siu Lung Bau” and “白灼唐生菜Chinese Lettuce”
They were not expensive (about $22 max) but the quality was not “very good” as the name of the restaurant might suggest. It was bad.
First came the marinated pig intestines. Those were completely shocking – it’s the bright florescent orange ones you see at fish ball stalls! I couldn’t believe I’d be having it inside this famous restaurant.
Then came the turnip cake. I can’t say it’s too horrible but it wasn’t fresh. It’s a bit soggy and a bit bland.
The Shrimp Dumpling was reputably very good so I had raised expectations. When it came, it was a disappointing sight. It’s small, lukewarm and the shrimps inside weren’t especially fresh.
The Crab Roe Siu Lung Bag weren’t too bad but it’s nothing special. The dough was not well made. It’s too tough. There were some crab shells inside too. So be careful.
The Chinese lettuce wasn’t fresh and tasted bitter. We couldn’t finish the whole plate.
Surprisingly, the appetizer came last. The Chilled Bitter Melon is one of the chief’s recommendation and apparently very famous. It consisted of chilled bitter melon sprinkled with some crushed garlic; interesting concept. I agree with the restaurant that it is good for summer. It’s good for detoxification too.
Felt a bit like a tourist trap.
Good service is quite good and the price is not expensive.
I might just give it another go for dinner only to see what the hype is about and perhaps ask Mr. Choi Lan for his signature.
However, definitely NOT recommended for dim sum.
