There have been various trendy diets that come along. Atkins, South Beach, Raw ... just to name a few. Lately, there has been a growing popular one called Paleo. What is the Paleo diet? Paleo, short for Paleolithic, is a diet that focuses on eating food that was found during the Paleolithic era of humankind. The belief is that modern processed foods have forced the human genome to adapt, creating diseases, obesity and all that bad stuff. The Paleo diet is one of the most popular diets currently found as it doesn't force you to eat some weird set of rules like eating carbs only. It basically is to avoid processed foods such as processed grains, processed oils and refined sugar. It's more a focus on staying healthy than losing weight and in the process, you lose weight. The Awakening is the first restaurant that focuses on serving food that is Paleo friendly. However, though it is Paleo friendly, it is not a strict Paleo restaurant as they also serve things like craft beer and coffee (things that are not included in a Paleo diet). Their motto is that they are "Paleo Plus". Items on the menu that are strict Paleo have a "P" written after it, so if you are following the Paleo diet, you can order those. It is located in Sai Ying Pun on Centre Street, near the elevators. I should note that is near the top of the elevators, off a little side pedestrian area. The interior was very simple. Just some tables and metal chairs. Nothing special but at least spacious enough.I had come on a weekend, so was given a brunch menu. They do have a regular menu on that they use as the placemat. As it was a late lunch, I decided on the frittata and an ice tea.Bottomless Ice Tea ($35). I asked for it to be sweetened and they gave me a pitcher of honey instead of the usual sugar syrup. Because hey! Refined sugar isn't Paleo friendly. The ice tea was alright. Light with a nice amount of lemons. When they say bottomless, it really is bottomless. The waitress refilled constantly even without me asking. Good stuff!Frittata ($85). Frittata came with a side of salad which was lightly drizzled with balsamic vinegar. Salad greens were crisp and pretty fresh. Frittata smellled fantastic when it arrived. It had corgette, capsicum, grilled chicken and cheddar. The frittata was soft and fluffy. Everything was wonderfully flavored minus the chicken which was a bit bland and overcooked. Perhaps due to the fact that salt is not Paleo friendly? I don't know but they did place salt and pepper shakers in front of me.A promising place to eat if you want to try something healthy. Though not a strict Paleo restaurant, it's still good to have something like this in Hong Kong. The food was fairly decent. I would return again to try something else as other items interested me like the sugar free, gluten free desserts and the quinoa pasta. Service was friendly. Food came out a bit slower than usual, I have no idea why. But they apologized for it even though I didn't ask about it. 繼續閱讀
