It's a pretty rare occasion when you try a new restaurant, and loved everything you ordered. Went early on a Friday night to get seats, arrived around 6:30pm and there was already a line but they were slowly beginning to  seat people. We were one of the last 2 and got seated at the bar. I had this dish in Thailand but struggled to find a Thai restaurant in Hong Kong that made these betel leaf wraps so I was very excited to see this on the menu! The filling is sweet and crunchy, which compliments the leaf nicely. Highly underrated as a Thai dish so I would highly recommend you try this.

This was the surprise of the night, it was unlike any other curry I've had before. The curry was rich with seafood flavour from the prawns and really creamy. My boyfriend was pretty much drinking it like a soup! The prawns were nicely cooked too. If anything, I wish there was more served up in the curry (maybe other veg). The roti was served as it should be (flaky & fluffed up!) and was the perfect vehicle to the soak up the curry. LOVE.

Because we sat by the bar, we essentially watched this DELISH fried rice get made right in front of us! As Chinese people would say, it had a great amount of 鑊氣 (...breath of a wok?!), which everyone knows is what makes a fried rice go from mediocre to AMAZING.  The dish had nice chunks of crabmeat and egg throughout, I liked the touch of the fried garlic in it as well. It was served with Thai chilli sauce, cucumbers and a wedge of lime, which collectively tied the dish together. Definitely recommend this if you want to stray away from always getting your classic Pad Thai.

To finish off what was already an incredibly yummy but filling meal, we wanted to try the coconut ice cream. It was served in a young coconut shell, topped with shaved young coconut, peanuts and corn. The ice cream was really smooth, creamy and not too sweet. I personally loved the corn topping as I felt it brought some interest to the dessert and complimented the coconut flavours well (this is how they do it in Thailand isn't it). Not a bad way to round out a meal eh? 

Overall, one of the best places I've eaten at for a while. Samsen is a must try for foodies, there are too many commonplace Thai restaurants in the city but this is definitely not one of them. And trust me when I say, my standards for food are bloody HIGH. 

Note: we also ordered a drink each - a glass of white wine and a gin cocktail with rose syrup (it was yum! but I lost the name of it). Both were ~$98, so yeah, drinks are pricey but what's new.

Samsen has one of the best Thai food in Hong Kong. Whilst they don’t do reservations, the food is certainly worth the wait. The decor of the restaurant is beautiful, and a seat at the bar gives you a front row view of the chefs making your dinner. The food is absolutely magnificent. The shrimp curry was smooth and had a perfect amount of spice. My first impression was that it was a better version of a lobster soup! My friend arrived first and lucky we don’t need to queue much like 5mins, it’s more spacious in here than the wan chai branch. It’s chill environment and I love the wooden table in particular.

They don’t do boat noodle here so I pick the signature curry noodle with beef and egg noodle which has very thick tasty soup base in a good way tho. The egg noodle is chewy like handmade pasta,
nomnom. Lime soda is nice no sugar, exactly how I like it! Refreshing ;)

用餐時間好趕,因為一路都有人排隊等位。

價錢方面以為會好貴,但其實同出面泰國餐廳價錢差唔多

除了店舖面積大了很多以外,上環和灣仔店的中文名字也不同喔:
灣仔的店名是《泰麵》,而上環的店名是《泰館》。
不難發現,其實上環店並不是《泰麵》的分店,而是姐妹店!

份量不少,有厚厚的兩塊。
吃下去脆脆的,略嫌油分較重。
好掛汁,沾咖哩吃一流!一定要趁熱吃喔!

店面很大,所以店員都忙得不勝負荷,可能要舉手一會兒才有人過來協助。
有一名店員特別突出,非常充滿活力,好可愛喔XD
有一座客人在慶祝生日,全場的店員一個一個的走出來跟他們唱歌耶!!超開心的畫面
環境滿寬敞的,只是音樂有點大聲,所以說話要更大聲,同桌才聽得到,所以整家餐廳就是很吵。
吃辣又大哄,幸好第二天沒有喉嚨痛XD

I have been seeing people posting pictures of this restaurant on social media lately. As Samsen doesn’t take reservation and I heard theres always a long queue, so I decided to come here at 12pm, same time when the shop opened. Luckily we got a table right away and all tables were filled quickly within 5 minutes. I ordered their signature curry chicken noodle which quite surprised me as the chicken portion is huge, with full piece of chicken thigh. The curry soup is so delicious as well! I added

I added the chilli to make the soup more spicy and I think the noodle tastes better with it! I also added the Thai water spinach which is hot and delicious. The portion is big enough to share among 2 people. For drinks, I ordered a lime soda water ($18) in addition to my noodle as lunch special offer.

Good food but some bad attitude from the staff. Special orders being served off the menu for people even though this is a no reservations restaurant. Needs a better sound system, the loud volume kills the table right below the speakers and the staff is not empathetic about it. Waiting queues outside not being managed, its hot and theres no physical distancing !

Summary: Tasty Thai “street food", but it doesn't warrant lining up for, especially at these prices. Decent portions, airy setting, and great service aren’t enough to explain the hype. Give it a try once I guess, but I can't see how it's worth the trouble.I love Thai food. I love Thai food. The zingy flavors, massive seasoning, and how so many dishes are happily sour hit all the right buttons for me. That’s why it’s such a tragedy how bad most Thai food is in HK (at least on the island). Over-sauced, over-sweetened, not enough seasoning, too oily, too many noodles… it runs the gamut on how to mess Thai food up. My friend asked for a Thai resto recommendation the other day, and I didn’t have even one I could give wholeheartedly. That said, I still eat at the mediocre places all the time, so they aren't inedible certainly...

With that, know that I was looking very forward to the insanely-hyped, even-more-insanely-patronized Thai street food restaurant Samsen opening a location in my neighborhood. We had tried at least 3 times in Wan Chai to get a table, but were defeated by crazy lines at basically all times of the day. Covid had delayed us trying the Sheung Wan branch, but during the Labor Day long weekend, we finally felt ready to eat out again and Samsen was at the top of the list.

Amazingly, when we arrived at 630 for opening (nothing else to do at home…), we found it PACKED, and we got the last seats in the place at the bar (when we left, there was still a line). By the way, it was amazing to sit at the bar and see how a packed restaurant operates, so i recommend that if you're going in a small group. Service is terrific even with how madhouse-packed it was; the servers never looked rushed or panicked, making time to refill my water before it ever fully emptied. I also really like the layout of the place; not sure if it’s related to the government requirement to space the tables out, but it's lively without being uncomfortable, and the high ceilings definitely help.

The curry Khao Soi is the specialty at this shop (they don't have the Wan Chai branch's specialty boat noodles).

I enjoyed the noodles, which were chewy and fresh, but felt the soup was pretty much like any other Southeast-Asian curry. It might be authentic, but it's also 148 HKD. It includes a chicken drumstick and a few thigh bits included as well, which were nicely cooked. If you do get this, considering adding a side order of the delicious-looking roti to sop up the sauce (which is an additional and unfortunate $38)

I didn't even want to order this (Pad Thai kinda boring right?) but glad my friend forced me. More salty/savory than usual Pad Thai, but just a different kind of delicious. Alongside were four giant fresh tiger prawns, and lots of small dried ones; I loved the combination of the chewy tofu bits and the dried shrimp. Worth trying for sure.

Deepfried Thai fishcakes coated in a mild red curry served with sweet dipping sauce. These were disappointing for the 108 asking price, with the red curry not adding a lot; was too mild to notice. Rather than the classic sweet dipping sauce, I wish they had included a separate curry dip to give the dish some kick. If you like Thai fishcakes these are fine, but i'd skip them.

Maybe we didn't order the right stuff, but as we sat at the bar, we noticed that the other popular dishes were the chopped duck larb and the crabmeat fried rice. I can't imagine either of these are earth-shattering. Note  that because i don't really eat beef, we didn't consider a lot of dishes on the menu e.g. the wok-fried basil wagyu beef (their version of my favorite pad grapow). I've heard the beef Khao Soi curry is better than the chicken, so keep that in mind if you go.

In summary, it's a charming place, and the energy/vibe is pretty cool, especially if you get to watch the chefs in action. The food however, is good not great, and I'm not sure the sophistication of a modern kitchen (and the massive increase in price) actually raises any of these dishes above their street-side origins. For the two of us, it was 480+ for the 3 dishes and a Thai milk tea, which is not cheap for this type of food (with no alcohol!)

HK thai food isn't great, but I'm not sure this is the place to satisfy your cravings. It's fine to try if you can walk in, but lining up (especially during the Age of Covid-19) boggles the mind. The $150 for a decent bowl of curry noodles doesn't really sit right either. I'd rather pay half the price for some local place's Thai tom yum noodle soup, which usually doesn't require fighting anyone for a seat. But that's just me. If the hordes ever die down, i might be back, but I'm not counting on it.

飛餅即叫即整
真係用泰國大圓煎板半煎炸
熱辣辣嘅餅皮外酥內軟
脆到好似食緊薯片咁🤩
裡面夾左香蕉片
本身已經夠哂邪惡
面頭仲淋上大量煉奶醬
提升咗成個層次

為左佢我一定會再嚟食😭
