My friend who's an editor in a hk online magazine took me to an organic menu tasting at Red Soho. Since I am a vegetarian I tried 3 salads and she had the meat-dishes.

The Roasted Organic Beetroot with Herb Salad & Goats Cheese ($98) came as a perfect 1st dish. Not only is it fresh, well-flavored and seasoned but also extremely interesting. Not everyone is a big fan of beetroot but their yellow beetroot may change your mind. At first we were very curious about the boiled yellow pepper alike veggie but we found out that it's a special kind of beetroot. It tasted like sweet potato with a clean, light and fresh flavor, yet its texture crunchy. Superb!

We also tried their Organic Golden Figs with Pear Tomato, Asparagus , Lettuce & Passion fruit Dressing ($98). Personally I am a big fan of figs and passion fruits and I like the texture of seeds mixed with soft tomato and asparagus. Probably because the figs and passion fruits were all organic, their sweet and sour taste was not overwhelming like they could do sometimes, especially for regular figs.

If you prefer something more fruity and adventurous, the Organic Golden Watermelon Salad with Heirloom Tomato, Baby Lettuce, Red Onion & Feta Cheese ($128) may be you cup of tea. Unlike ordinary red watermelon, the golden watermelon was less sugary and crunchier. This contrasted the texture of heirloom tomatoes which was starchier than regular tomatoes. Although the creamy taste of the tomato could be too funky for some people, heirloom tomatoes have become increasingly popular for its health benefits. And since it's not readily available it was still quite an interesting experience to try it.

My friend also tried other organic main course dishes Organic Linguine with grilled Chicken Breast, Chili, Basil & Olive oil ($138), Scottish Organic Salmon Fillet with with Barley Salad & Lemon Mint Dressing ($188) and Braised Organic Beef Cheek with Organic Baby Carrot, New Potato & White Radish ($198). 紅得不得了的Red Bar,這杯shooter幾消膩的。

Arrived on a Tues night to find that they had a function here, so we were moved to a back room which had been set up for regular diners.

The reason I had come back was so I could take a friend here to try their food. Also, my dining companions from my last visit had told me after I wrote my previous review that they had tasted MSG in the food because a couple hours later they felt the thirst. I didn't believe them, because I felt fine that night - probably because I had 5 glasses of sparkling water to down my dinner with!

So for dinner we decided on the following:
Mushroom soup $68
This tasted as good as last time - had a nice aroma and flavour of wild mushrooms.

Lobster Roll $238
This was actually more generous in portion than last time. It had lobster pieces spilling out! I liked how this time the lobster was on top of the mayo mix of celery etc which gave it a nice crunch and varying textures and flavours. However, they have perhaps overseasoned it because the top part was way too salty! The chips again were pretty but not crunchy enough to be 'chips'.

Grilled Salmon $188
I had high expectations for this. Upon ordering the waiter asked me if I wanted it medium. I said medium-well so it is still pink in the center...It arrived well-done
. So it was quite dry in texture. Sure, the bottom and the skin was quite crispy, but they were dry too and I'm pretty sure it was pan-fried then grilled (if grilled at all). The salmon itself was seasoned only at the bottom, so the middle part was tastless, but with the help of the pesto, (tiny) lemon, and salsa it was edible. The salsa was really tasty.....until about 20 minutes after dinner.

After we had paid and left, I started feeling weirdly thirsty... despite having had 2 cups of water already with dinner. Luckily I had a bottle of water with me so I finished that too.....but the after-taste of MSG was still lingering unpleasantly in my throat. I do not think I am MSG-sensitive, having grown up on instant noodles and fast food, but I was really having an unpleasant time after dinner. For their use of MSG alone I will have to withdraw my earlier '5', and submit this review. This is since I only expect MSG in fast-food restaurants and (possibly even upscale) Chinese restaurants - but even so, I have never felt like this after a tasty Chinese dinner. For the chefs to use MSG in Red Soho, I am truly shocked and disappointed, as there are plenty of seasonings/herbs/spices one can use to give flavour and texture to food without ANY use of chicken powder or MSG.

Also, the toilets were disgusting.
Bill came to $400 after a 30% off.

Last year, I visited Red Bar & Restaurant in IFC for dinner. I can't help but remember being fairly disappointed. Everything looked amazing but tasted wrong. The salads were bland, the main courses - meat and fish were not any good either. I have learnt that they have since added/swapped some items on and off their menu, but I am thinking there are other restos in IFC worth my trying first....

Anyway, our party of three had originally wanted to dine in Central rather than Soho...but the few restaurants I called were all full until 9.30pm on a Sat night...I don't blame them. So i tried my luck here and they had space!

We arrived to be welcomed by extremely friendly staff. I know some restaurants in Soho have very friendly waiters/managers, whilst others are known for their extremely poor service. I would say the staff here are all knowledgeable plus friendly! I also couldn't help but notice they had staff of different ethnicities, which is helpful for some who may like to communicate in Chinese.

After studying the menu I selected the few of the dishes I heard they were famous for: Crab cake, mushroom soup, Grilled fish of the day plus a lobster roll.

Bread selection
This was complimentary upon ordering. I wanted to include this in my review because not only was the bread fantastic, but the condiments that came with it were fabulous!
There were two varieties of bread, I preferred the roll with the poppyseeds on top as it was soft and slightly sweet. There was also two condiments (see one of the reviewer's pictures) - salted butter and garlic tahini. We concluded that the butter wasn't anything like the normal French ones, but it was more saltier which tasted even better than regular salted butter. The tahini was my favourite - it was slightly tangy and very flavourful!

Mushroom Soup with Truffle Cream
The soup was well generously portioned, and well-seasoned - tasted like a blend of wild mushrooms rather than the 'cream of mushroom' type you get in many restaurants. It beats Brivo by a little =P. The cream was drizzled on top, but I couldn't taste the listed truffle? I may have to try again some time later.

Crab Cake
The crab cake was smaller in size than I expected, it is about the size of 3/4 of a blackberry curve/bold 9700
. It was however, very lightly dusted in bread crumbs (only the outer layer), the inside being mostly crab meat! It was served with a tartar sauce which was good but I thought unnecessary as it would mask the flavours of the crab meat.

Grilled Fish of the Day (Seabass) inclusive of two sides; Cauliflower & Cheese and Steamed Garden Vegetables $4xx
This arrived after the starters, together with the lobster roll. The fish was quite big - similar to one I've had in Dot Cod. It was served with a lemon-butter sauce, a whole roasted garlic head, fresh lemon, potatoes.
The fish itself was grilled perfectly. Best I've had I believe! Seabass is my favourite fish, and so I was only too eager to order it when I was told this was the fish of the day and hoped not to be disappointed. The fish meat was sweet and flaked very well. The skin when the fish arrived was crisp on the top being just off the grill. The sauce I thought was again, not needed for a sprinkle of lemon juice and pepper was all that was needed to highlight the freshness and sweetness of the seabass.
The side of roasted garlic was really good - it had been cooked until tender with olive oil and complimented the grilled fish when eaten together.
The cauliflower and cheese was really really rich but tasty. The cauliflower had been cooked till soft, which is how I like it, and the sauce was very creamy and had bits of cheese I think (?) in it. Very tasty indeed....I'd give it an A*.
The steamed garden vegetables were quite sad amongst the other dishes - it arrived in a tiny bowl, with a few broccoli pieces, green beans, carrots and diced potato. Firstly, I think potatoes should't have been included because they are technically starches and not vegetables. Secondly, the other vegetables were slightly over-cooked, bland and simply uninspiring.

Lobster Roll
This was composed of a diced lobster meat and mayo mixture, sandwiched between a hotdog bun. Whilst I could see that the hot dog had been grilled on the inside, the sandwich was already cold when it arrived at the table, so the grilling doesn't actually make any difference.
The lobster filling was tasty enough but for more than $200 the serving was really small. I guess I expected something more than 4-inches long, with a tastier bun perhaps.

By the end of this meal the three of us were too full to look at the dessert menu...perhaps another time

The restaurant is well designed, spacious and hip albeit slightly too dim. There are tables which are low in height with sofa chairs, tables which are medium, and tables which are higher with bar stools. I appreciated the variety as they suit the various purposes customers have (drinking, gathering, dining).

The bill came to $9xx with 2 bottles of sparkling, and with the 10% discount. The value rating below is affected by the water + lobster roll.

Drinks: I was in the mood for something with a bit of a kick so I kicked off my Brunch with a Bloody Mary. I have to say that it is not often that I have Bloody Mary’s that I enjoy and this one was exactly the way I like. Unlike the usual watery ones I am use to in HK with hardly any vodka!
Starter: I thought that the range of choices for starters were good however they could probably add a few more things there. I ordered the King Scallop Ceviche. It was fresh & strongly flavoured which is how I like it.
Main: My friend who religiously had been telling me to try the Truffled Mac and Cheese or the RED Reuben. However I couldn’t face trying either this early in the day so I settled for the RED Big Breakfast instead. I have to say it was hearty & warm to have a home style cooked breakfast that reminded me of the great breakfasts I had back home. Above all, it was the perfect cure for my hangover.
Overall I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to RED SoHo and am glad I finally tried it out. I think next time I will check out dinner so I can try some of the other the hearty dishes that they have to offer. The staff & service are also very friendly and add to the easy going vibe of the place.

For mains we ordered the Lobster roll and RED Burger.. The Lobster roll reminds me of the ones i had in New York with its big chunks of fresh lobster. Shame about the portion size as I thought it was rather small. I highly recommend the RED Burger as the beef is good quality & extremely juicy. The chips were also very deep-fried, giving it a crisp texture upon the first bite. The Hamburger is a very generous portion and comes with fries and gravy sauce which was amazing. One thing was though the food took a long time to come after our starter however it might be because it was busy.
Overall i recommend this place to you all foodies in Hong Kong.

Macaroni with cheese($158)-Large:

Chocolate Layer Cake($68),Tiramisu($68):
