In the old days, private kitchen dining meant food would be prepared with extraordinary care but this distinction is waning with rents and food ingredients increasing at an exponentially rate. Unless it is an expensive meal, I suppose a $400-plus dinner does not deserve decent ingredients and culinary skills. It was hard to find this place because the sign wasn't apparent and the Google map located this place at the opposite side of the street. We climbed 4 stairs before reaching it and the decoration was kitsch. The table setting was all right and I was hopeful that this would turn out to be a gem.We were in a happy mood and should be easy to please as this was a birthday dinner for six but the occasion turned out to be a poor dining experience, at least for me. The bread was bland but I knew something was really amiss when the Baby Scallop Salad with avocado, artichoke, olive, cherry tomatoes and oregano dressing was served. The lettuce was chopped into small pieces soaked with oil with these tiny baby stinky scallops on top. I tried my best to finish it but I still left a few leaves behind underneath the fork and knife.I hoped the second course Creamy pumpkin soup with crab meat would improve but it still tasted oily and bland except for the sweetness. I couldn't clear the plate.Hoping against hope that the third course, Roasted prime sirloin steak with grilled potatoes, would be better but it just proved that I was too hopeful. If they couldn't get a simple salad, how could a cooked dish be any better? The seasoning was poor and uneven and the meat quality was terrible. It was tough and I was scared to chew it because it had given me this yucky feeling. I lost my appetite totally. Out of politeness, I kept it all to myself but I couldn't force myself to finish it, not even half of it. I rarely “wasted” food dining out but I felt unjust to my stomach otherwise. When my friend inquired, I just told her that mine was tough. In fact, the sauce and seasoning were all wrong, even the sweet mustard and English mustard condiments were weird. None of my friends complained and they finished their plates but none would claim them delicious either. For desserts, we had Créme Brûlée. It was creamy good like pudding but not the normal texture you would expect of a Créme Brûlée but I still finished it.I wanted to be supportive but I had never been this angry at a meal before. I was dismayed when my friend suggested us to celebrate Christmas here again and I truly felt sorry for the birthday girl because I knew she had preferences. The food was terrible unless having a private place where you could bring your own bottles without corkage fee was a super indulgence and you like open kitchen to get your clothes stinky afterward.
