OK, maybe I'm exaggerating just a little bit, but I seriously think that good Italian retaurants here take themselves too seriously and as a result make for a way too serious meal. So when I'm not feeling so serious, but I'm in the mood for a seriously great Italian meal, I hit the seriously cosy Osteria. Seriously! OK, let's get serious. Osteria is the home of good ol' fashion

OK, maybe I'm exaggerating just a little bit, but I seriously think that good Italian retaurants here take themselves too seriously and as a result make for a way too serious meal. So when I'm not feeling so serious, but I'm in the mood for a seriously great Italian meal, I hit the seriously cosy Osteria. Seriously!

OK, let's get serious. Osteria is the home of good ol' fashion home-cooked Italian comfort food. With it's wooden decor accentuated by warm colours, it certainly lives up to its name as an Italian-style eatery that is both casual and cozy, not unlike a tavern. Blah blah blah, to cut to the chase, I'm saying this place is chill. Word.

So, yesterday I decided to take my father out to Osteria for his birthday. As it's quite the effort to get the old man out of the house, I needed somewhere good so he would feel like his efforts were rewarded. I also needed somewhere affordable...because I'm cheap. Anyway, as I've been several times already, I knew Osteria would not disappoint.

Right after we were led to our table, and before we even sat down, I ordered the Margherita pizza. Upon sitting down, the waiter mentioned that they had in stock "parma nero" which in my infinte wisdom, I knew to be very tasty and limited in availability. From what I've heard, parma nero is from a special breed of pigs, limited to couple of thousand...a year? You know what, I have no idea. I just know it's damn good so if it's available, get it. So instead of the Margherita, I changed my order to the Prosciutto di Parma Pizza but with the "black ham".

...And more about the pizza: I have to say it's probably the best in HK. It's like the whole thing was couriered straight from Naples! The dough was baked just right with the crust a bit crispy, and the base baked long enough so that it was firm enough to hold the toppings and not soggy. It's hard but not TOO hard; a flaccid pizza is never a good thing. The tomato sauce is arguably what makes the pizza so great. The sauce is refreshing and subtly sweet and a bit tangy too. The parma nero adds another dimension to the pizza as it thinly layers the pizza with good ol' saltiness. Needless to say the flavour of the ham is especially heavy simply because it is parma nero. To top it all off, the pizza was blanketed with rocket salad and parmesan cheese shavings. While the cheese adds much flavour and texture to the pizza, the rocket salad helps to balance out the overall combination of tastes with its subtle bitterness. Anyhoo, I have to insist that should you ever dine at Osteria, it's imperative that pizza is a part of your meal, regardless of the flavour. And remember, upgrading the cheese to Buffalo Mozzarella is a must as it changes the pizza from excellent to eccellente!

As for my main, I chose the roast baby rooster. Sounds cruel, but oh-so-good. The skin of the cooked bird is roasted to a nice dark brown colour, and while the flavour is concentrated in the not-so-crispy skin, the meat itself is tender and juicy. While cutting up this baby, I found that most of the meat just came off quite easily. As for my favourite parts, the meat on the drumstick and tiny wings were most savoury. As if what I just described wasn't succulent enough, the birdie was lightly drizzled with gravy which only made the dead thing more tasty and thereby less guilty to eat. Oh, and before I forget, Rudy the Rooster- I like naming my pets- came with awesome French...I mean Italian Fries! What a treat! They were pretty sweet...literally. I suspect they were made of sweet potatoes and they tasted so so good with the gravy. Normally, cock on a menu to me is like a last resort item- if i don't know what to get, I order chicken. This is definitely not the case here...I highly recommend it. In fact, I still have that fowl taste in my head and mouth, and in my opinion, nothing beats cock-breath.

As for my father, he ordered a special sausage fettucine. By special, I mean it was on the special menu. I suppose the fact that the fettucine was green in colour also made it pretty special. If I remember correctly it had: green fettucine, sausages, tomatoes and broccoli. Aside from the pasta, everything else was cut in tiny bite size pieces which made the dish easier to eat. Another good thing about the small pieces was that they easily absorbed the flavours of the dish, which I can't really describe because I don't know how it was made. I mean sure it tasted like the sausages, tomatoes and pasta combined but something else was in there too; it wasn't a sauce because there was no sauce...it was magic. Anyway, get it while it lasts.

So, we were ready to pay the bill when we got a very cool surprise...a birthday cupcake! Actually, it wasn't really a cupcake but a chocolate lava cake! With a lonesome little candle burning in the centre! Hurrah! My dad has finally turned one!!! Anyway, the little cake was very tasty and when we cut it in half the molten chocolate burst forth with the fury of St. Helens. Actually, it leaked out like something not-so-pretty. But it was very good. While the chocolate cake was very well made, it was the gesture that really put a tear in my eye. I mean, I only casually mentioned to the waiter that it was my father's birthday and here he was with a complimentary cake singing his heart out to the Happy Birthday Song. I couldn't help but join in and sing harmony. We rocked it

Anyway, if you made it this far down the review, basically I just wanted to say that Osteria is great and if you're craving for good and simple Italian fare, make your way to Osteria.

But the best appetizer that night was the Bruschetta platter. It was just amazing. There was bruschetta with a chunk of mozzarella cheese, bruschetta with smoked salmon, and bruschetta with parma ham. I loved all of them!

First we had the La Classica Margherita, which is Margherita pizza at it's finest. Simple yet delectable. I loved the chunky slabs of mozzarella cheese.
Then we had the Pizza Prosciutto di Parma, which is pizza with parma ham and rocket salad. This was unique. I've never had pizza that was smothered in loose vegetables before. And it was surprisingly good. One of the chefs told us that this pizza is a best seller. I loved how this pizza managed to mix parma ham and rocket salad. I suppose if you're a parent and you want to feed your kids with vegetables, this might be a good place to start from.
And lastly, we had the Capricciosa with salami, olives, artichokes and mushroom. I loved this! A little heavy on the stomach but really really delicious.
We also ordered the squid ink risotto. We were asked if we wanted al dente or soft. This was the first time I've ever been asked if i wanted my rice one way or another. I asked the server for his recommendation and he said soft as that's what the Asian tongue is more accustomed to. He then mentioned that they've received complaints when serving al dente risotto, that people would complain that the rice isn't cooked yet because it was al dente. So cooked soft was the option we took.

We ordered Clams Linguine in tomato sauce and Lasagna Bolognese. I loved the clams linguine. They were a tad bit spicy and the clams were neither gritty nor grainy. The lasagna was very rich and I had difficulty finishing it not because it wasn't good, but because it was too rich in flavour.
Then we had some pan fried sole fillet. It was soft and tender and was slathered in cheese and veggie sauce. Ah heaven.

We ordered a Tiramisu, a Sicillian pie and a Pumpkin pie. The tiramisu was very light and was at least as good as hoped. The Sicillian pie was chunky and chewy and interestingly yummy too. But the best dessert surprise of all was the Pumpkin pie. I wasn't too sure about it at first but it delivered. And it delivered well. It was smooth and quite creamy and pumpkin wasn't exactly what came into mind as I was relishing the first forkful.

This is a great restaurant. The walls are done in stone and reminded me of Tuscany however there is also a feeling of modernity in the contrast between stone walls and simplistic pictures. Before entering the restaurant there is a large glass window through which you can see the kitchen. Before entering the restaurant there is a large glass window through which you can see the kitchen. It creates a sensation that you are not eating out but that you are rather part of a family.

The feeling is continued through the manager's lively attitude. He makes sure that everything is good and will often personally deliver your food, bread or wine. The wine selection is wonderful, many options to choose from so everyone will be pleased, except the beer drinker.

I was surprised by how limited the offerings were for pasta since this is an Italian restaurant. However, the menu does have a good deal of variety. I ordered the spinach ravioli in the butter sauce (picture below). The taste was good, however I would have like a bit more smokiness.

All in all a great dinner. Well worth the price and wonderful, charming atmosphere.

茄醬蜆意粉----茄醬好新鮮感覺,好似即刻用蕃茄磨咁!我又好鍾意食,掂!不過我平時乜野茄汁野都鍾意食,所以反而冇乜comment 可以俾呢!

parma ham 薄餅----好好味!個ham一點都唔咸,唔會得個咸字!個pizza大大個都唔呃錢,其他野食都唔係呃錢,但真係好細份,呢個係合理size.

lam rack-----好好味!佢又幫你分開左個架同肉,我地有小朋友0係度,所以唔食生,就揀全熟,我個人唔係好食全熟既,有點擔心會太老,或者會un. 點知好意外,好嫰,完全係我想像之外。肉質依然好有肉汁,又柔軟,真係好好味!又係細份左些少啦!

tiramisu------酒味好淡,但超好味,好滑,當然又冇水既感覺。甜淡適中,推介。我地有朋友生日,佢有塊淋既餅上面寫住happy birthday to xx,仲有人出黎唱生日歌,都幾落力既。

有一個唔知係pr 定經理,一得閒就會搵人傾下計,問下人對野食滿唔滿意,貫徹意式餐廳風範。

But I just needed the reason to go there...and there came the time of having to pick a place for my folks' wedding anniversary celebration. I thought my parents wouldn't object to this too. Saw an advert in the papers on a 15% discount promotion at Osteria a couple of months back. But I just needed the reason to go there...and there came the time of having to pick a place for my folks' wedding anniversary celebration. I thought my parents wouldn't object to this too.


I made a reservation for 7 o'clock in the evening, and by the time we got to the restaurant, there were only a couple of patrons. I took the opportunity tolook around and ask the captain for the choice of freshly made pasta of the day, after all this was what we came for.

As we settled down we found a glass filled with Grissini on the table. Well I wasn't so impressed with it as it was dry and cold. The other choices in the bread basket that followed were unremarkable, but the Pane carasau, a specialty bread from Sardinia where Osteria's head chef Michele Camolei was native to, was crisp and enjoyable.

One of the signature items of Osteria, which serves Northern Italian cuisine, is pizza. They actually have their in-house pizza oven. We found a big bargain with the restaurant's Pizza Promotion - Pizza, Beer & Dessert for just $239.

From over 10 kinds of pizza on the promotion menu we picked Tirolese (tomato, mascarpone, cooked ham, wurstel) which I thought was the most "normal" combination of fillings. (Well can you imagine having curry in the pizza? Here you can have pizza flavoured with curry...
but pizza on the main menu seems to be more authentic.) The crust was crisp and wheaty, and the melted stringy mascarpone cheese (in contrast to the more commonly used mozzarella cheese) was a simply delightful indulgence! Added to the evil treasure were the meats...yum yum


There were 2 types of beer to choose from. We chose Menabrea beer, from the oldest brewery in Italy in the town of Biella at the foot of the Italian Alps, while the other choice was Ichnusa beer from Sardinia. The former was a lager beer, well I know nothing about beer but I think it was rather hoppy, and most of the golden liquid went down my brother's throat and he liked it quite well.

Dessert was 2 scoops of gelato, which were lemon sorbetto & chocolate gelato. I'll get back to this later.

We were spoilt for choice of Primi Piatti (First Courses - or pasta - in English).

Mezzemaniche o Spaghetti alla Carbonara di Guanciale, ovviamente senza panna ($150)
Short tube pasta or Spaghetti in Carbonara sauce with pork cheek and egg (definitely without cream)
The bits of pork cheek in fact looked and tasted like bacon. Using short tube pasta to make Carbonara was a bit unconventional, and even though this pasta was not freshly made it was still very al dente. The cheese sauce was evenly coated on the pasta but the texture was creamy (yet no cream was used!) and the tangy cheese taste was prominent. An outstanding treat.

This was one of the freshly made pastas of the day recommended by the captain Peter. I presume that sea urchin isn't a common sight in Italian cuisine right? (Or was I just unknowledgeable?) Yet this combination was interesting - although the sea urchin wasn't the freshest and I'm not a big fan of asparagus, the pasta itself was excellent. The tagliolini (flat spaghetti) was softer than the Mezzemaniche pasta above, and in this setting the texture was just right, and the green pasta was refreshing to the eye and the palate.

Now there was one thing missing...antipasti! OK we'd finished the pizza and pasta, but no Italian meal would be complete without an antipasto, so nonetheless I insisted on having one. I quickly went through the reviews here on OR on my cell phone, and ordered the highly commended
Instalata di polpo alla Ligure, fagiolini, patate, basilico ($160)
Liguria-style octopus salad, green beans, potatoes, basil pesto
Well it didn't disappoint, the salad was beautifully presented, and even though I thought the octopus (tenacles?) was a little tough and preferred the greens instead, my parents liked it very much.

Finally it's dessert time!


Our gelati that came with the pizza set arrived. The scoops were close to tiny but I was impressed by the palate-tingling lemon sorbetto (I guess there was some limoncello as well?!). The chocolate gelato was made of bitter chocolate (I think( and was not sickly sweet.

It was bro who suggested having another dessert. We opted for a fruity one,
Instalata di frutta, tiepida, limoncello e sorbetto alla fragola ($70)
Warm fruit salad, limoncello, home made strawberry sorbet
If you want to impress your date, this is the dessert to order. It was great fun to watch as the dessert was prepared before our very eyes (while our mouths busily devouring the gelati), the climax being the limoncello going up in flames
! This dessert needs to be consumed quickly too as the sorbet would soon melt! This wasn't a problem for us as it tasted so good.

I brought along the newspaper advert for the 15% discount, but it turned out that I didn't need it as there was already 15% off with major credit cards (I don't know if it's still the case now, please check with the restaurant before you go). The bill came to $773 after the discount, and I would consider this a nice deal for a quality meal in a laid-back ambience.

As we left we were greeted by a gleaming Chef Michele. Applause to Chef Michele and his team for giving our family a memorable evening!

記得以前係英國讀書, 仲可以成日即興去歐洲旅行時, 為左慳錢, lunch 好多時都會 pick li 個pizza.. 因為個人好鍾意食rocket 同埋parma ham.. 而且價錢永遠好實惠.. 但記得大部分version都會加多粒olive係上面...我通常會搶埋我朋友d olives 黎食..不過 osteria li 個version就冇! 哈哈~ 唔可以俾到100% "回憶的味道" 我..

okay, 懷緬完畢.. 講番個pizza>> 其實okay, 因為通常 li 個pizza 都會偏咸... 但osteria li 個一d都唔咸.. 不過就少咁左d parma ham 既香.. d rockets 都只係okay, 我個人覺得佢li度 d rockets獨特個陣味唔夠濃... (不過亦絕對有可能因為我飲左個濃湯令味蕾有點遲鈍!)

食完個pizza, 等左好耐都冇人黎收碟.. 直到個carbonara可以上..
carnbonara 上個陣已經係幫我地分好晒.. portion 唔算好大, 但我同我朋友已經ok飽.. 唔係好食得落.. 不過唔想side野..

可惜一啖吹落去.. 嘩!! 咁難食既???
冇乜味不特止, d 意粉好似未煮熟咁.. 唔好話同以前食過最好食既pasta比(個人經驗係o係venice一間暗角餐廳)... 就連香港好普通收你幾十蚊一碟既都比唔上!!! 好失望呢... 同個waiter講.. 佢好快就收走左換過第二碟俾我地.. 不過可能我既口味同個廚師有d出入.. 我都係唔覺得好味左.. 結果我地冇finish到就埋左單了

係香港既意大利餐廳黎講.. 我覺得算okay, 而且價錢對比起質素都算尚可接受.. 我諗為左佢個湯我會再番黎! 可能下次試下其他野睇下有冇新驚喜喇

Dinner with two friends. Restaurant was full on a busy Saturday night. Staff was a bit pressed, but coped reasonably well. Thought it was a bit strange to have olive oil poured into tiny bowls on the table (apparently for dipping bread) but then no bread was served (only breadsticks, not suitable for dipping).Prosciutto and melone was good. Prosciutto and melone was good. Two of us tried the Sardinian pasta-type dish Fregula (a sort of larger couscous grain) -- the chicken version was better than the clams but both were a refreshing change from the usual spaghettis found on HK menu. My friend wanted his lamb a bit better cooked and the staff complied cheerfully and promptly.

The extensive wine list has a great range from about $300 up to several thousand for a bottle. We navigated around the lower end of the list and had a very nice Rioja.

All in all, a very pleasant evening.

慶祝我們結婚9個月. 在openrice.com搜尋意大利菜.走進金域假日酒店, 在典雅的階梯拾級而上, 來到「浪漫情調」的Osteria.坐下來感覺舒適, 光線柔和. 餐具與一杯麵包條已精確地佔據在適當的位置.在餐牌上看了又看, 最後點了礦泉水, 肉醬千層麵, 龍蝦露筍薄餅, tiramisu. 侍應寫菜時顯得緊張, 不過我們是友善型客人, 逐一重覆待他寫好. "tiramisu要在餐後才上," 我生怕會出了亂子. "當然!!" 他似乎也了解我的心意.隨後女侍應挽來一籃麵包, 我們各選了兩件, 連同麵包條, 蘸著橄欖油和醋, 慢慢地品嚐, 慢慢地等待...端上瓦煲盛載的千層麵香氣撲鼻, 還好吃過麵包, 能忍得住待拍過照後才享用. 醬汁濃郁, 包藏肉粒與千層麵, 其美味真的配得上餐牌的重點推介.隨後的薄餅也非常好吃, 露筍脆口, 龍蝦鮮味. 缺憾只有份量——足有一呎直徑, 最後我們只好餘下三塊, 以免吃不下tiramisu. 星期六8點多到達Osteria, 還要等一會,客人真的不少!2個人, 因為用左紅白酒既coupon要了一白酒,是pinot gorgio 是送的就別要求多了,冰涼帶點fruity,其實也蠻舒服的。2個人,很貪心但又唔可以叫咁多野,所以o係parma ham w melon同pizza中揀了parma ham pizza! 仲一個carbonara pasta同一spring chicken.Pizza是不錯,不過還爭少許脆薄的感覺。Pasta很好吃,al dante而且這個carbonara一點也不像別家的那麼油膩,很讚! 而春雞味道沒有很特別,但肉還是很嫩,而配上的炸薯條很好吃! 自家焗的麵包也很好吃,侍應很忙好像不夠人用但服務還是可以的。隔壁還有意大利人用餐,質素應該也有保證!喝完半樽酒我就頭暈暈,快樂的一頓意大利菜!

Saturday was a busy night for most restaurants serving buffet. We had checked Sheraton, Holiday Inns, Kowloon Shangri-la etc. and they were all fully booked. Restaurants serving european flairs became alternatives. It was not my first time going to Osteria, and two previous visits had given me a great pleasure.They are now serving a special cocoa menu, from cocoa toast to foie gras, and from cocoa pasta to gnocchi. As I am a big fan of chocolate, we ordered several dishes made in chocolate.L

Saturday was a busy night for most restaurants serving buffet. We had checked Sheraton, Holiday Inns, Kowloon Shangri-la etc. and they were all fully booked. Restaurants serving european flairs became alternatives. It was not my first time going to Osteria, and two previous visits had given me a great pleasure.

They are now serving a special cocoa menu, from cocoa toast to foie gras, and from cocoa pasta to gnocchi. As I am a big fan of chocolate, we ordered several dishes made in chocolate.

Let's cut into the cheese!

Pizza Margarita

The crust was well made, and with the extra virgin olive oil we asked them to drip in when served, it brought out a stronger flavour. However, the mozzarella cheese didn't appeal to me too much. I would prefer to have something stronger. I would prefer the same pizza served at Cucina at Marco Polo Hong Kong and Bacra in SOHO.

Cocoa Gnocchi with Almond Flake and Lamb Shank

The Gnocchi was a bit too mushy and soggy to me, but the Cocoa flavour did bring a boost to it. The lamb, however, was really rough and the flavour didn't really go along well with the taste of chocolate

Cocoa Flavour Pasta with prawn

The texture of pasta was good, and we did not taste any lumps. Prawn and fish were fresh, especially the prawn. You could taste the crispiness and seafood flavour. Al Dente.

Cassata siciliana

A classic Sicily dessert. Basically, it's a sponge cake combining with ricotta, pan di Spagna, candied fruit, and marzipan. It was moist but not too sweet. One of the best Italian desserts I have ever tried. Bravo!!!

Coconut Panna Cotta

Smooth with nice coconut flavour, according to my friend. I didn't try it but according to him, it was wobbly and with a strong coconut flavour. It blent in with the milky taste perfectly.

In terms of their services, they really need to learn how to work efficiently. There were about 6-7 waiters/waitresses, serving a room with about 20-30 tables. We had to wave our hands for quite some time before we got served. This is just not acceptable in a hotel setting restaurant. There was no interaction between the chef or servers and us, a bit disappointed in that too.

P.S. the spending is after 15% off, and we ordered 3 alcoholic drinks

Given that Holiday Inn is at best a 3 star hotel, I have to say that the Italian restaurant -- Osteria -- far exceeds the quality of a 3-star hotel restaurant. If this restaurant was in Soho or a fancier hotel, the price could easily be 20% higher (just to compensate for the ridiculous Soho rent!) Great thing is you also get 2-hours free valet parking!All the staffs are extremely tentative, (without overdoing it), and the friendly Italian chef Michele came out to greet customers frequently.
