Chaiwala takes up the space that previously housed Zafran, a huge Spanish tapas restaurant with a nice bar and great ambience, and the area still feels more or less the same despite some décor tweaks and change in furniture. I get the sense that the mainstream view is that Chaiwala is a great, hip place to have Indian food in the heart of Lan Kwai Fong, but on our singular visit for a weekend brunch I haven’t been able to completely appreciate why. Good hospitality and lively weekend vibes are a significant bonus, but the food was just OK, which fell just a little short of my expectations. At a similar price range New Punjab Club seemed so much more of a treat, and on a budget there are tens of dozens of Indian restaurants all over Central and the island. Even Jockey Club’s food court serves Indian dishes that are at least as good in taste as those we had at Chaiwala. I feel the food could do with some re-consideration so as to make the best use of such an interesting space and a lovely hosting team.

“Street of India” platter with six small dishes to start
– Salad with Indian condiments;
– Pani puri with Jal-jeera – the crispy balls with a hole is the pani puri, in which there’s potato & chickpea, and the jal-jeera is cumin water that’s in the glass bottle. You pour the jal-jeera into the pani puri and gobble the whole thing immediately;
– Bhelpuri – puffed rice salad with mango and beetroot yogurt;
– Palakpatta and shakarkandi – chaat with spanish fritter, sweet potato crisp, spiced yogurt dressing and house chutneys;
– Aloo chana – cooked chickpeas with potato cubes and spicy mayo; and
– Papdi – fried dough wafers

For someone like us who haven’t quite developed an appreciation for Indian street food, the dishes were somewhat intriguing, especially the pani puri with jal-jeera that we saw in countless videos (which also turned out to be quite tasty), but the rest just felt like lots of carbs and crunchy fat with a bunch of spices (to put it in the crudest way) and a Western twist. I will skip commenting on these as I am not familiar with these dishes.

Curries and Biryani
Kerala fish curry (+$80) was simmered in a coconut and ginger sauce with raw mango and curry leaves, but while the curry broth was rich and savory the fish was really mushy.

Gosht kofta curry (beef meatballs in an onion tomato gravy) was another disappointment. Not too bad, just a ball of ground meat that didn’t stand out in any way.

Subz dum biryani (fried rice with assorted vegetables) and mutton biryani (fried rice with boneless lamb medallion) were aromatic and fine. These actually stood out. The naan was also fine.

Tandoor
Lamb chops (+$80) were apparently sourced from TLC and made with papaya, chilli and black pepper marinade. This is also meant to be one of Chaiwala’s more well-known dishes. They were okay, but not exceptional.

“The classic chicken tikka” with hung yogurt, chilli and cinnamon definitely sounded mouth-watering. And it was quite good. Just not so good that I could tell it apart from my usual Indian takeaways (except for the cinnamon).

Dessert
I thought they’d have cotton candy for dessert but we were presented with this. I believe the orange-like dessert is Gulab jamun which is made with milk solids and flour then deep-fried. The rest is more western—ice cream and chocolate cake. Just a little something sweet to end.

今日去咗中環嘅呢一間餐廳,因為有Restaurant Week Menu嘅關係,盛惠$398 +10%一位。餐廳嘅門口非常之隱蔽,係一道橙色嘅大門,如果唔係事先上過嚟睇呢一度嘅食評,都唔知道呢一間大門就係去呢一間餐廳呀!入到去之後行咗幾間房先知道我哋要去嘅話呢,裝修就真係一流嘅,10分有氣氛,非常之唔錯!好快前菜就嚟啦,炸得非常之香脆又夠薄,令人感到10分驚喜同埋期待之後嘅嘢食。之後嚟咗兩碟嘅前菜,一碟係Aloo Tikka Chaat (spiced potato cakes) ,而令一疊就係Grilled fish,食呢個魚嘅時候竟然感到有一種微波爐嘅感覺,令人非常之驚訝。然後就到食咗tandoor chicken and salmon,比想像中好食,雞肉嫩滑,三文魚都非常之唔錯。最後嚟到最期待嘅Curries,點知係我哋最失望嘅地方!butter chicken 應該係用微波爐整出嚟嘅,而且啲咖喱又唔係特別好食!另外兩款就比較特別,都唔作多評論啦。去到甜品已經唔想再多講啲咩,但係因為生日嘅關係,佢俾咗一頂印度頭巾我戴,感覺非常搞笑,仲有張即影即有,加分嘅!

Chaiwala處身左酒吧Hugger Mugger裡面, 裝修和它的印度菜一樣, 走新派路線. 從街頭小食, 也就是印度文的Chaat, 到傳統的Tandoor和咖哩也有. 我自然和對面街的New Punjab Club比較, 因為它倆也是大型餐飲集團旗下的旗艦印度菜餐廳. Chaat我們點了Bombay Bun, 麵包烤得甚香, 而且切開後連內裡也烤過, 見到其心思. 麵包本身味道不差, 但和New Punjab Club的同類菜式比較就少了其可喜的奶香, 而免治羊肉香料醃得入味, 但口感有點粗糙, 失色了一點. Tandoori Chicken炭烤香十足, 香料味相當辛辣, 配上Raita也就是印度薄荷醬, 味道對比度高, 只是烤爐火喉太猛, 肉質有點乾, 不夠Juicy. 反而咖喱羊有驚喜, 不是羊肉碎而是一整塊慢煮羊腿, 外表深紅還以為它的味道會太濃重, 吃下去香辣味道溫和, 用上克什米爾辣椒就是色水深紅但辣味溫和, 再加上乳酪和番紅花, 口感和味道是我的至愛. We came for the restaurant week lunch. Unfortunately, I was feeling a little sick beforehand, and in addition, them being understaffed did not help. I only got through appetisers but although limited, both the food and service we got were super nice - as always!In terms of serving time, the appetisers came maybe 15 minutes after we ordered, which was fine, but the mains came maybe an hour after, and they first served a table who were seated after us. In terms of serving time, the appetisers came maybe 15 minutes after we ordered, which was fine, but the mains came maybe an hour after, and they first served a table who were seated after us. As I chatted with the server as she put our mains down, I learned that not only were they understaffed in the dining area, but the kitchen as well. Knowing what that meant for her, I said sorry to her instead haha

Unfortunately, I could barely eat by the time the mains came. My friend doggy-bagged everything she didn’t finish, and did the same for the desserts. Their doggy bag system was pretty organised with a checkout system so you wouldn’t have piles of bags at your feet etc.

When the bill came, they seem to have accidentally charged us a top-up for one of our mains, which was not shown on our menu when we ordered. I asked about the charge to the same server and she came back instead with “actually, we‘re only going to charge one meal since you didn’t even eat”. It really wasn’t your fault, but thank you so much for the great service again, despite being understaffed, Chaiwala! Hopefully this situation was only for the day - I’d still highly recommend this place!

The food is ok but the service is really poor.We were told to return the table at 20:30 when we got in at 18:45, and it’s fine for us. At 20:10 we wanted to order the dessert and we actually planned to leave at 20:30 by quickly finishing the dessert, but the manager insisted to move us to the bar table at hugger muggers to continue our meal because there is a time constraint. They offered to treat us the dessert, and we were ok with that.But after we moved to the bar area, things started to get

But after we moved to the bar area, things started to get really bad- we are totally ignored by the staff, and we actually planned to celebrate a friend’s birthday but the staff totally forgot about it and just served the dessert without any writings or candles, and certainly without the chaiwala birthday celebration (eg the polaroid, the hats etc which they have been doing for a lot of customers tonight) AT ALL (that was the sole reason we booked this restaurant). Very very disappointing. We have to remind them to give us a new one with celebration platings, and remind them again and again for the cutlery, and cups for the water.... and nope, the chaiwala birthday celebration is not given to us even after we requested. we felt like we were invisible and neglected all the time at the bar area, not to mention how small the table was and how little space there was. Such a bad experience and definitely will not go back.

Ordered the set. Everything was as expected but I definitely preferred the tandoori chicken over salmon. Nothing too special. However at 6:30 we unexpectedly got 4 glasses of wine each (for 2 of us) as it was free flow for an hour and being on the house. That was a surprise and with the last glass of white it's because we said it was nice we got an extra.

Our first time having Indian-style brunch - located at the basement floor, hence the lighting of restaurant was rather dim. But that did not affect the taste of the food. Particularly like the fluffy cheese naan, grilled salmon and dessert platter! 🇮🇳 近年週末Brunch風氣盛行 不過印度brunch還真的是第一次試任食頭盤質素普通 有印度炒飯 脆米餅 蕃薯片和沙律另外每枱有一款頭盤pani puri 球體的小米餅裡面盛著鷹嘴豆和薯蓉 將孜然水倒入米餅一口吃掉 主菜的烤三文魚和烤雞都很不錯特別是烤魚 表面微焦但肉質保持嫩滑主菜除了烤物還有咖喱 我們分別選了三文魚咖喱和扁豆咖喱咖喱均配飯和印度naan 必試超級鬆軟的芝士naan 🧀趁熱吃還可以拉出芝士絲最後每人有一碟甜品 以前吃過galub jamun 印象甜得像吃糖漿這盤甜點卻完全不會過

想試很久的印度菜,是我的印度同事介紹的。她介紹的另一家試了,麻麻,太西化,fusion得了火,可能加上地理位置欠佳,已經結業。這舖位以前來過,是吃西班牙菜的。入面超大,我們差不多去到最盡頭。暗得誇張,連餐牌都看不清楚。沒想到相機影出來還好。裝潢有心思,影出來看得更清楚。先來papadum和芒果醬。幾脆,甜甜的,開一開胃。由於實在太黑,不想看餐牌上細細的字,便點了$488一位的tasting menu。店員介紹有前菜、燒烤、咖喱和甜品,不是那種細細碟、很多道的tapas style,而是nice sharing portion。Pani Puri沒想到第一道就是這個我很喜歡的菜色。有次去不丹旅行,落機後吃的第一樣就是這個。在一個市場裡,是個小朋友賣的。波波像papadum,脆脆的,入面放了薯仔粒、香草等,倒入微酸帶甜的cumin汁,一啖放入口。咬破脆脆,爆汁,再吃到不同層次的口感和味道,是個很清新開胃的前菜。Aloo Tikka Chaat第二道前菜,薯餅帶辣,刺激開胃。配鷹嘴豆和脆脆,有石榴的甜,乳酪的酸,幾重味道,幾特別。可能因為有石榴,比起印度菜,感覺更像中東菜,想起Francis

先來papadum和芒果醬。幾脆,甜甜的,開一開胃。由於實在太黑,不想看餐牌上細細的字,便點了$488一位的tasting menu。店員介紹有前菜、燒烤、咖喱和甜品,不是那種細細碟、很多道的tapas style,而是nice sharing portion。

Pani Puri
沒想到第一道就是這個我很喜歡的菜色。有次去不丹旅行,落機後吃的第一樣就是這個。在一個市場裡,是個小朋友賣的。波波像papadum,脆脆的,入面放了薯仔粒、香草等,倒入微酸帶甜的cumin汁,一啖放入口。咬破脆脆,爆汁,再吃到不同層次的口感和味道,是個很清新開胃的前菜。

Aloo Tikka Chaat
第二道前菜,薯餅帶辣,刺激開胃。配鷹嘴豆和脆脆,有石榴的甜,乳酪的酸,幾重味道,幾特別。可能因為有石榴,比起印度菜,感覺更像中東菜,想起Francis。

Tandoori
有雞和三文魚兩款。燒得不錯,三文魚未嚡,雞肉都幾嫩,不乾,醃得夠味而不重。不過太大件又有些滯,吃到這裡已經有點飽了。

Old Dehli Butter Chicken
主菜反而有點失望。Butter chicken雖然是signature, 但很普通,沒有驚喜,味道還好,試與不試也沒關係,而且再來一款雞,有點悶。Garlic naan還好,都幾香,但可以再熱一點,再脹一點。飯一粒粒粒,乾爽,幾香。

蔬菜有枝豆、西蘭花、青豆等,沾滿椰絲,麻麻。吃了一半就放棄了。兩個主菜都吃剩。

跟餐有壺茶,店員細心地先問我可不可以飲茶。39週了,飲少少不怕吧。Masala chai tea,好好味。飲完一啖又一啖,飲得太興奮,被老公拿走了我的杯。茶和奶很夾,很滑,又有輕輕印度香料的味,沒有一般chai tea過份的甜。看似很大壺,其實不深,一人兩杯。

看了餐牌,最想要的甜品是朱古力,結果來了Carrot cake,第一下有點失望,吃了第一口卻有驚喜。個人不喜歡上面的炸蘿蔔片,個人口味的問題,老公把它們吃光。蛋糕鬆軟而濕潤,少少蘿蔔味,上面是那種鹹鹹甜甜,red velvet cake上面的忌廉,厚厚的,不會膩,跟蛋糕很夾。配rum and raison雪糕。

入面的用餐位置和外面的酒吧位置差不多滿座,中間望著廚房們準備食物的吧枱則還有位,背景音樂很大聲,再加上食客們熱情的對話,有點兒吵,不過氣氛不俗。

定價太高,試一次就夠了,想吃正宗印度菜不用給這價錢,可以吃到更好的。想吃氣氛和fusion,較喜歡山頂那家,食物較似印度菜而又不失fusion。沒有加一,但服務值得自行加一。

I have always been a big fan of Pirata Group from Pici to Tokyolima. Hence, I was really excited to try out Chaiwala with a high expectation (especially when I loved Black Sheep's New Punjab Club).The atmosphere was amazing and all the staffs were super friendly. However, we ordered the tasting menu and the food was disappointing. There are not much choices for indian food in Hong Kong. This is one of the best one I have ever tried. Especially, celebrating birthday with your loved ones. The staffs here will prepare the candle on the dessert plate. Most surprisingly, they will help the customers to take instant picture and give it back as a gift. Highly recommend to celebrate any anniversary and birthday in a chic restaurant. We have ordered the tasting menu for $480 pp, which is very worthy and rich in food.

🧆The signature dish— PANI PURI WITH JAL-JEERA (crispy ball w/jar)— was strongly recommended by the waitress. It has a crunchy ballshaped shell on the outside and minced flavoured meat, potatoes and a mixture of seasonings on the inside. There’s a small jar of sauce for you to pour on this little ball. I put too much sauce on my first one and it ended up tasting super salty. I put less(1 teaspoon) on the second one, it was much better.

🌮The beef taco was good, but you can order sth more special in this rest unless you’re a big fan of 🌮 like me! It wasn’t bad tho, still a high quality one.

🍛I alrdy miss the butter chicken so much!! It’s sweet & little spicy. Many ppl can’t eat spicy food, this level of spiciness was so mild that it shd be acceptable to most people. Another thing is, butter chicken is always cooked with chicken breast, a part that is Often complained to be tough & chewy. But this one turned out to be tender and soft!!😍

🧆The cheese ball was fabulous as well but we were too full to finish it. Having 4 dishes was too much for two of us. I recommend to order less.

I was a little disappointed at the service tbh despite the satisfaction w/ the food. I usually received better services in this kind of relatively high quality restaurants. The waitress poured water for us once in a long while. Also, the butter chicken was on the staff’s table for some time until it was served to us.

份量非常紮實沒在唬弄你的大羊腿隨便一撥就離骨。可能我對羊肉有點戒心,挖了一口肉送入口中,不誇張眼睛冒愛心。焦化洋蔥、印度乳酪跟各種香料所熬成的醬汁包覆着鮮嫩的慢燉肉有驚喜!

燒烤分別選擇了Chicken Tikka和Grilled Pink Salmon。⠀
Chicken Tikka好吃👌🏻 雞肉很嫩滑,有一點辣,搭配的Yogurt醬很開胃。相反Pink Salmon就有點烤過頭了,不算嫩滑,搭配的牛油果醬也不算濃郁。

咖哩方面分別有Fish Curry 和 Yellow Curry。Fish Curry比較偏向椰汁很重的味道,吃多了有點膩,而且魚肉只有少少幾塊,而且很不完整。另外的Yellow Curry 應該是鷹嘴豆,有點偏鹹,但味道尚算不錯。主食方面有印度香料飯和Cheese Naan。來這間餐廳之前看到有評論說這裡的Naan真的很好吃,因此我也對它有比較高的期望。可惜,薄薄的naan沒什麼起司,也沒什麼口感。反而印度香料飯配上咖哩蠻不錯的。

總結:餐廳環境很好,裝潢很特別很漂亮,食物質素一般,服務都算好,就是上菜有點慢,主要都是吃環境。食物分量不算多,但很飽肚🍴整體來說,在Restaurant Week以優惠價錢來說,還算可接受,不過這個價錢有更多更好的選擇。⠀
