Because the restaurant was full, we were brusquely ushered to a table right in front of the door. I was given a couple of menus, covered in finely embroidered Chinese style cloth. I looked down the list of items, fairly standard Sichuan things given elaborateness in their English translations.

Then I saw the prices! Dan dan mihn was about $98, while a lot of the other dishes were way up about the $100 mark. These were ordinary dishes – some the more ‘special’ things were even higher up the scale. I began evaluating whether it was still worth staying to try this place. I realised that for the price of two or three dishes here I could be having a nine course Sichuan meal at Mum Chau’s or a feast of food at Sijji.

These dishes would have to be really good to make it worth such prices. I looked around at what other people had, glimpsing small bowls and fancy cutlery, and wasn’t convinced. So I did something I very rarely do. Stood up and left. After we got out, my Japanese friend asked me why I’d wanted to leave so much.

“Too expensive,” I said, “Dan dan mihn for $100”

He laughed and, being an ex-food exporter, did some sums out loud. “Yeah, noodles only cost $4 and meat maybe $10, and vegetables $5, so where’s the extra 81?

Instead, we wandered down the hill to one of the dai paai dongs on Graham Street and ordered a feast of different freshly made dishes, none of which cost more than $40. I sat as the rain tumbled down outside the umbrella, enjoying this food and authentic Hong Kong atmosphere.

I’ll go back to Chilli Fagara sometime, to see if it really justifies such extravagant prices. But for now, I’m glad I walked out.

The consistency in the food preparation and presentation at this place evens out with the inconsistency in the quality of service and attitude of the staff. ps - yes, the dan-dan noodle was bad, the aubergine was overpriced, but stick to the prawns and beef.

I was there a while ago for lunch, and was highly disappointed by the food. The "soup" of the Dandan noodles was peanut butter mixed with hot water (or at least it tasted like that), and the noodles were overcooked (and with the peanut butter sticking onto those in the bottom of the bowl). I also ordered some asparagus which were outrageously overpriced for its portion, and way too greasy and salty to eat. Made a reservation, but when my friend and I arrived, they only had the table right at the door for us, so the waitress kindly offered to take us to the "other room"... so we followed up a few steps up Graham street, and lo and behold! There is another alley way with a traditional Chinese door which opened up to a very red room, complete with tree, lanterns, chinese music, the works. There was only one other couple there, and we took a nice comfy table for 4 (the whole room was only set out for 12 people anyway), and it was much nicer than the busy main shop down there. Quite pleased with this arrangement.

They served us chrysanthemum tea, and I never tire of watching the tightly wrapped flower unfold in the glass of hot water. There were 3 appetizers, potato, mushrooms and cabbage, very appetizing and just the right amount of spice. We ordered a vegetarian lettuce wrap, a de-bone chicken named after the chinese general zuo, stir fried spicy bitter melon, tan tan soup noodle, and a crab meat soup in whole pumpkin. (Now that i type everything out, i suddenly reaslied that was quite a lot of food for 2 girls only, haha).

The lettuce wrap was not spicy and came with hoi sin sauce, the lettuce were big slices, so no fiddling around and trying to contain a minute amount of filling as with the very small pieces of lettuce. The chicken was spicy, and deep fried in a thin batter, the chicken was ok but not much chicken taste to it (probably frozen fillet). The bitter melon was very well done, dry and retaining the texture (some places overcook it and make it soggy). The tan tan noodle was ok, not too spicy, with a nice peanut flavour that did not overwhelm the whole dish. But my favourite was the crab meat pumpkin soup, the portion is enough for 2 to share, and the pumpkin was very tender, sweet and delicious. The skin was very thin, and you could eat the entire pumpkin... yummm....

The food is cooked in the main shop and is brought over, all covered properly along the way. The service was attentive without being intrusive, the tea refilled regularly, and the waitress automatically replaced our dirty dishes or wet napkins appropriately.

Although one could fine loads of cheaper and possibly nicer sichuan food in town, I liked this place for the combination of good food and the great ambience, and dinner for 2 at $517 is acceptable.

This quaint little restaurant has been always been my favorite from day one. Used to go there quite frequently and totally agree with the early reviews in this site. Yet circumstances and other temptations came across, so I haven’t gone as often to satisfy my craving for those hot haunting numbing sensations. Also, the place has been almost impossible to get into without prior booking, so an impromptu person like me ends up waiting outside or being politely turned away. However, I never really complained because the sheer small size of this 20-something seater is limited by capacity, but I have always been assured of getting quality good food. I reserve this place as a surprise treat to out-of-town visitors who are courageous and adventurous enough to taste authentic and exciting Szechuan food.

Funnily after a while, I even forgot their telephone number, which is why I had to google them, and imagine my surprise to read bad reviews yet at the same time mixed with Chili Fagara being named by Economist dot com as a “Best in China”in their Hong Kong Cities Guide. I became totally confused, and so decided to give Chili Fagara another go to see for myself. I specially invited two of my visiting mainland Chinese friends, one of whom resides in Beijing together with his wife who originated from Szechuan. I booked under their names and deliberately went late, let them ordered, to see if the racism charges are true.

I arrived to find the place packed again and luckily my friends are fine and dandy. No problems whatsoever. I breathed a sigh of relief. They had started digging into the appetizers without me, and certified to me that the taste is interesting and authentic. We didn’t order too much, but I had a sample of my favorites including the fish in the hot and numbing fagara broth, a fiery hot veggies dish they make for vegans, a bowl of fresh greens, and a new dish which involves oxtail cooked to quite spicy proportions. I was in heaven again. Chili Fagara didn’t let me down and kept their orgasmic promises.

My mainland friends were thrilled, not because we only had to shell out 800-ish (soft drinks only) to satisfy their home-town cravings, but mainly because they did not think such culinary levels could have been found in Hong Kong.

For the “nasty”part, my friends thought that they should not have put red carrots in the oxtail dish. The lady from Szechuan thought the dish would be compliment much better with maybe lotus roots or even winter bamboo shoots. Also, the tight surroundings really do not proportionate with the price level that they are levying. However, all agree that in order to lay claim to being a “best in China”level, the main consideration should be food and food only. For the record, I do think they deliver the goods.

Honestly, the price is not cheap by Hong Kong standards. If you are looking for a quick fix, a dollar saver or to just appease your hunger, I suggest you can give it a miss or maybe go during lunch time. Yet if you are sucker for chili and fagara like me, or if you want to challenge your buddies to an extraordinary treatment to their taste-buds, or if you want to treat your visitors to a fiery toasting but without having to fly them all the way to Szechuan, I would wholeheartedly recommend a hike up the Soho hills.

Went with my friend to this restaurant for lunch today. We arrived at around 1 pm and found that apart from us there was only one more table there with two customers. We ordered 2 set lunches (ordinary normal Sichuan dishes, sweet and sour fish fillets and peppery chicken, nothing fancy) in about 3 minutes time and then we started to wait.....and wait....and wait....

Ah, finally after about 25 to 30 minutes, the hot and sour soup arrived. After the soup, nothing happened except two more tables were being filled. So there were 4 tables and 9 customers only in total. Since my friend had lunch here before so I asked her was it also that slow in serving lunches last time when she was here. She said it was pretty quick and ok last time. We did ask both the waiter and waitress twice to hurry a bit cos we still had to be back to the offices (I'm in Cheung Kong Center and my friend in Pacific Place) by 2 pm. The waiting game carried on then I just couldn't help but had to have a look at the cashier / entrance of the kitchen and checked out what the heck was going on there. I found that the waiter was busy with managing some "Food by Fone" takeaway plastic bags. So I suspected that they had a bunch of Food by Fone takeaway orders (there was a bit of rain during lunch time so maybe they had more Food by Fone orders than usual) and were busy preparing takeaways.

My suspection was right because later we saw the Food by Fone delivery guy appeared at the doorway and the waitress was busy handing out bags and bags of takeaways to the delivery guy. At 1:40pm we still had nothing, zip, zero! But on the contrary, the table behind us with two foreigners who were coming in later then us not only had their set lunches served but they had almost finished theirs as I was told by my friend (I couldn't see the rest of the restaurant as our table was tucking in a corner and I was sitting with my back facing them).

At this point I just couldn't stand any more so I jumped up and walked straight to the cashier and demanded for the bill (we had 2 soups though we had nothing else). But of course the waiter dared not to ask us to pay.

Guilty of:

1. In the interest of takeaway orders at the expense of in-house customers. Stupid move!
2. Alleged racial discrimination. Westerners get service first, Asians get to wait. Relic of colonialism patron?? So OUT!
3. Inferior time management. Mind you, there were only 9 customers in the restaurant. Can't imagine what will happen if it was full house with 10 more customers.

Final verdict: LOUSY! YOU WON'T MISS ANYTHING IF YOU DON'T DINE THERE.

p/s Can't really rate the taste of the food cos WE WEREN'T REALLY SERVED ANY!
