Having lived in Taiwan as a kid, I've always associated the smell of Taiwanese pepper powder (yen su fen) with sneaking out after school to the snack stall next door for some tien bu laa or other yummy delights. To me, it is the smell of fun and carefree days. So of course, when I heard that Taiwanese fried chicken had come to HK, I had to try it! I ordered a chicken breast steak ($9) and 1/2 a portion of popcorn chicken ($15). Pleasantly surprised, given all the bad reviews! The popcorn chicken was juicy and chunky, not just chunks of skin like you sometimes get from KFC. They were almost like mini nuggets, except the meat wasn't processed - major plus points! It was a pretty gigantic portion too. The chicken breast, I was expecting to be the size of a chicken tender that you can get from burger king, but no! It was again, pretty gigantic too! The second best part was that everything was freshly made. And the very best part? Authentic yen su fen taste! It's very rare to find this kind of flavouring even in Taiwanese restaurants here, let alone a place that gets it right. I could smell it from across the street...mmmm. Service: the ladies were quite nice too - they gave me extra powder when I asked. Points of improvement: I think they could make the shopfront look a bit better - you can see the kitchen inside, and it's just bare white tile walls with flourescent light tubes and a few counters. Not dirty or anything, but they could hide the back and make the front more hip. Ireland potato's shopfront springs to mind. They could really capitalise on the exotic Taiwanese factor as well and add something simple like bubble milk tea as a side. There's potential in this - if it looked "cool" they could distinguish themselves from other street food sellers, perhaps even have a booth or two for customers to gobble their chicken on. I suppose though, the economy class decor helps keep the prices down - was very full on $24 bucks - you can't even get that at mcdonald's these days! I get that their specialty is the big A4 sized chicken steak, but if that's led to disappointment (skin coming off etc), why not try the popcorn chicken next time? …查看更多
