Booked table for 19:30 and we arrived 10-15min earlier, but no chance of sitting down before the designated time at all.  So we patiently waited and waited, finally was allowed into a busy busy restaurant with every table fully occupied.  The food must be good - and several items were no longer available on the menu.  We quickly grabbed what still on offer and when they turned up, the taste was good!  well worth the wait.  we had a delicious soup, followed by a special chicken - partially de-bon

Booked table for 19:30 and we arrived 10-15min earlier, but no chance of sitting down before the designated time at all.  So we patiently waited and waited, finally was allowed into a busy busy restaurant with every table fully occupied.  The food must be good - and several items were no longer available on the menu.  We quickly grabbed what still on offer and when they turned up, the taste was good!  well worth the wait.  we had a delicious soup, followed by a special chicken - partially de-boned, so that's good, but the legs seemed smaller than usual and not much breast meat either.  pot beef rib on the bone also good but pales in comparison to the other dishes. veggie dishes all pretty good and flavoursome.  a fired fish filet was delicious, just not enough to go around.  steamed whole red spot garoupa was superb - we ate every last morsel of it and added plenty of plain white rice to soak up the sauce.  however, this meant the cured meat rice was left over and we happily doggie-bagged it for later.  not cheap, but convenient for catching the express to the airport before the midnight flight to London. 
題外話/補充資料: for maximum choice, show up at the 6pm sitting as locals tend to eat early and they pick the best dishes. i doubt anything good will be available at the 8:30pm sitting

We reserved a table for three people at 1 pm on June 3rd. I have arrived 15 min before and try to get a table. The concierge could not find our booking although I asked them to check a couple of times. At about 1 pm, they finally found our booking and our client arrived at about 1:05. We did not understand their mechanism of how to allocate tables to guests. Absolute majority of the people came later than us were seated before us. We felt embarrassed with our client standing for at least 10 minutes before we were seated. The restaurant is under staffed. It took 10 minutes and a few reminders before they gave us a pair of serving chopsticks. To be fair, the food quality is not bad. But the food ordering is chaotic, e.g. We tried to order a soup, the waiter told us there was only one kind left, we ordered, another waiter came and told us that was no longer available and asked us to change to another kind, a few minutes later, the same waiter told us again that was no longer available again. After 10 minutes, the waiter came back again and told us the first soup was available. The plain vegetable dish took an hour to come long after we finished all other dishes. The tables are very close to each other and the environment is noisy. At similar price, there are many better options in Central.

有論者認為厨出鳳城,我則說厨出利苑,很多名厨均出身利苑。利苑的新年糕點是中環送禮熱門選擇。新年已過,春茗話題之一是利苑紅棗糕不及去年。中間夾帶椰汁糕,讓口中兼具紅棗香和椰子香,但今年糕點糖太多,甜度太高,搶奪了紅棗清甜感覺。鴻星的紅棗糕則十分煙韌,但老人不適合。我認為海港酒樓的紅棗糕較佳,惜在年廿八已斷市。明年請早。

I was originally scheduled to visit on January 27th.So, I made a resevation on Novemver 14th on the website.But I got an unilateral cancellation e-mail from Lei-garden today because the date I reserved is fully booked. They said it was due to system error, but I can't understand.Why does they notice me 2 months after I booked?  Isn't it possible to notice directly?And is this the level of the Michelin 1 star restaurant?It was the first day of my trip to Hongkong with my mom and husband for the c

And is this the level of the Michelin 1 star restaurant?
It was the first day of my trip to Hongkong with my mom and husband for the celebration of the 60th birthday of my mom, and the Peking Duck is my mom's favorite menu.

Also, because it is a holiday in China, I can't book another restaurant.

They  have ruined my trip.

本人陪老闆來這裡午餐應酬多次的小嘍囉。客觀地講,菜式不錯,跟著老闆所以看到的服務態度也是很好,加上地點好也導致常常爆滿。因為中秋月餅這兩天開始憑券領餅,提早買券當手信,今天想著從公司出發拿了餅直接機場快線去搭飛機,11:10到的,說是要11:30才開始領。我說明了情況前台就讓我繼續等,說不是她負責。等到11:20.負責的人來了,我再說明了我的情況,明明券在我手,餅在桌上,他搖搖頭說再等等吧就進門不管而去。我明白換券有時間規矩,但是客人有特殊情況需要,情況又不複雜的,這麼沒有人情味的事情還是令人失望的。結果我還是去趕飛機了。沒有換到。今年的餅券買左,會送人。明年以後,不會再買這家,讓她專心賺遊客和常客的錢就好。

This Cantonese restaurant has a number of branches in different parts of HK and this time we went to the one in IFC. I booked my table through their online portal but seems that was missed as the receptionist could not find my booking. Fortunately the restaurant is not full and we were able to have a table (but need to return the table in one hour!). Since there are only two of us, we decided to go for the special set so we can have a variety of dishes of small portion. The starter is Crispy Roasted Pork and Fungus with Vinegar. The pork is roasted perfectly with the skin very crispy, pairing well with mustard. The fungus is crunchy as well. A good starter for sure.

Then we have the Double Boiled Sea Whelk Soup with Shark's Fin. The soup is always Lei Garden's signature, with the clear broth very tasty, with pronounced flavours and no oil at all. However, the shark's fin has no taste and apparently are not braised sufficiently beforehand. It is also not heated up before putting in the soup so making the whole soup just barely warm. The soup would be much bigger serving without the shark's fin overall.

The third dish is Braised 4 Heads Fresh Abalone in Oyster Sauce. The abalone was braised perfectly with the softness texture to allow you to cut it easily with the knife, yet also having a good chewiness. The oyster sauce is also seasoned perfectly to bring out the intense flavours of the abalone. The mini pakchoi has absorbed the sauce and is equally tasty.

The fourth dish is Steamed Garoupa Fillets with Tofu and XO Sauce. An interesting pairing, the traditional thoughts would be for the Garoupa to pair with just light soy sauce to bring out the delicate taste. But having the XO sauce which is intense and spicy, the combination is quite surprisingly nice in fact. The tofu is smooth and give a contrast to the texture as well.

The fifth dish is Roasted Crispy Duck, which got some salad on the side. The duck is roasted very well with the thin layer of skin crispy and there is no thick fatty layer underneath, and the meat texture is very tender also, essentially like melting when chewing. Maybe there is a bit more sauce to pair with the duck would make this even better.

The sixth dish is Poached Sliced Green with Wild Mushroom. The seasonal vegetable of spinach and mushroom is poached in a nice stock to give flavours. There are also some bean curd sheet which got soaked in the stock and likewise nice.

The lobster soup is not particularly tasty and frankly without telling me I won't be able to tell it is a lobster soup, being quite bland in flavour. The accompanying onion, mushroom and Chinese celery helped to bring some small bites to the noodle however to make it still enjoyable.

Finally the dessert is Sweetened Bird's Nest Pumpkin Cream. It is of the proper sweetness level for me, not overly so, with the nice pumpkin taste and some purée, paired with the bird's nest it enhances the premium offering of the dish with good taste.
Overall the restaurant is decently decorated though the tables are just too clamped to each other which make it very crowded and noisy. Service is fair, though again I don't like the way they keep telling customers we need to finish the meal in a hour (for dinner!). That in fact happened also during lunch with dim sum.
The price is expensive at $2208 for two, with only the set for two and nothing more, and considering the quality of the food and the ingredients that is quite over-priced. My overall rating is 53/100.

     冰烧三层肉(HKD$118):首先我喜欢它的size,切成一小块一口就可以吃掉,这样很好,不会让你觉得很heavy。外皮薄而脆,味道是咸香型。      龙虾汤泡饭(HKD$188):跟烧腩肉比起来,我会更赞这道龙虾汤泡饭。喝起来好鲜甜,而且这份鲜甜是很清新的,一点都不觉得饱腻。特别喜欢撒在上面的脆米,再加上菜粒与虾仁,吃起来十分爽口,口感倍增。

This is always my first choice to bring my friends from overseas. Menu is super - easy to understand with images and includes most of THE chinese dishes. My all time favourite is peking duck! My 11 years old can finish a whole dish all by himself. Always comfortable dining atmosphere - relatively quiet for chinese resturant standard and seats are always comfy.A recommendation - Why not having dim sum for the menu at night? It will be nice to have a few sau mai as an appetizer

新搬咗屋,所以班friend都話要去慶祝下,睇完戲之後就覺得好肚餓喇,成班人又懶喔,就就近去咗利苑度食dinner喇,我地等咗一陣就有位坐喇,感謝主!首先系絕對唔會少嘅蝦餃喇,去邊都要食,大家岩岩好一人一隻,皮薄,餡料比較鹹,但系其他幾個都話味道岩岩好,可能系我問題吧。鴿肉就好好味,覺得絕對系上等,食起身嘅時候好嫩,新甜美味,果然系鴿,肉質好嫩,牛仔骨又一般般喇,價錢仲要高翻小小,入嘴之後都唔見左牛仔骨嘅原味,唔推薦。環境都好舒適嘅,不過食下食下發覺好多人,睇嚟下一次都要提前啲book位喇

今日又同FRD去了中環的利苑酒家,其實利苑都去過幾間嘅喇,今日決定試下呢間。海鮮龍蝦泡飯就不夠之前好吃,沒其他利苑的入味,感覺龍蝦也沒有別的店多,但是很是很新鮮的,就麻麻。蟲草花膠燉水鴨湯很正宗,很用心煲,火候非常足,裡面的材料也是可以看得到很豐富,這碗湯真的很好喝,不比自己家裡熬得老火靚湯差,而且這個湯很多,夠幾個人一起喝了。蝦腸都還是很好吃,皮薄都可以看到裡面的餡了,感覺更好吃一些,鮮蝦也是新鮮出爐的,調味料不是很夠味,可能我比較重口味。一開始的時候可能人多,我們都等了20度分鐘,侍應偶讀沒空閒理我們。

蟲草花膠燉水鴨湯很正宗,很用心煲,火候非常足,裡面的材料也是可以看得到很豐富,這碗湯真的很好喝,不比自己家裡熬得老火靚湯差,而且這個湯很多,夠幾個人一起喝了。

When thinking about Michelin Starred restaurants, I have a picture in my mind of unique little and sometimes large restaurants with a mad chef toiling in the kitchen striving for perfection. Sure, there are some exceptions, such as the global phenomenon Joel Robuchon and his chain of L'Atelier Joel Robuchon restaurants. But those restaurants are spread across the globe, and until recently, I thought an exception.

Lei Garden is a bit of a local success story in Hong Kong, starting from humble beginnings in 1973 with a lone outlet in Sham Shui Po to a restaurant empire with twenty four branches across Hong Kong, Macau, China and Singapore. Most impressively, in Hong Kong along, there are six outlets that have acquired coveted Michelin Stars. While that sounds impressive, the business hit its peak in 2012 when it held eight individual stars and even more impressively, a two star restaurant at Mong Kok.

We'd walked past a number of the Lei Gardens in our time exploring Hong Kong, with many of them being located in some of the larger shopping complexes. It wasn't until one Sunday evening, wandering around ICF in Central that we'd decided to give the restaurant a try. There is a fun game I play at times, trying to get into Michelin Starred restaurants without a booking, something that would be impossible in Europe, but quite achievable in HK. As luck would have it, we managed to score a table.... With the proviso that we would be finished within an hour, so we didn't have too much time to waste.

As we took our seats, I took my first decent look around a Lei Garden restaurant and was reasonably impressed with what I saw. Very clean lines and a modern take on a traditional Chinese restaurant, but instead of large open spaces with round tables, the dining room was sectioned off with loads of smaller personal spaces. It actually felt quite intimate. However, there was one small problem, with such private spaces, we initially found it difficult to get the attention of the wait staff to take our order.. We were on the clock and didn't have much time to spare.

It didn't take us too long to decide on our Sunday evening meal, there were a number of items that jumped out of the menu that were 'must haves'. I was a little disappointed though. When finally catching the attention of our waiter and ordering, the one item that I most wanted was no longer available! I was a little crushed, mainly because it was the BBQ honey pork and looked incredible. Listed as one of the Lei Garden signature dishes, I was also a little perplexed...

Anyway, disappointment aside, we placed our orders and were presented with our ubiquitous pot of Jasmine tea and some curious little bites to eat. We didn't realise it at the time, but the wrapped scallion and cucumber with a sweet bean sauce was actually for our first course of Peking Duck (one of the several signature dishes we ordered). Instead, we ate them like little amuse bouche and wondered at the oddity of the dish.

It wasn't until the bamboo basket with beautifully thin pancakes were delivered, along with a viewing of the Peking Duck that we'd ordered that we had one of those 'Oh Yeah!' moments. Feeling a little embarrassed, our plate of thinly sliced duck breast with incredibly crispy skin was delivered and we set about making our first course of duck pancakes.... Unfortunately, missing one of the main ingredients, the scallion and cucumber. It was not the last lesson we would learn that evening! Onto the pancakes, the succulent and sweet-gamey duck was wonderful with the even sweeter bean sauce, the only thing missing was the scallions (oops).

Up next was another of the signature dishes, the beautiful looking crispy roasted pork. The little squares of perfectly roasted pork belly had just the right level of golden pork crackling on top of soft and jube like pork. The little squares were completely melt-in-your-mouth but with a satisfying crunch from the crackling. The sweetness from the pork was just right, with the flesh retaining enough moisture that you never felt that you needed a sauce (there was a sauce) in fact a sauce would have detracted from the delicate flavour, so I used it only sparingly.

We followed the beautifully presented pork with a very rustic looking dish of sautéed beef fillet with onion scallion. Look, there was nothing wrong with the beef, it was well presented and expertly cooked, it just lacked a little flavour and punch. I'm not sure if it was a seasoning issue or something missing from the sauce, but whatever the case, it was a reasonably forgettable dish.

Our second major faux pas of the evening, and one that also involved the Peking Duck, really had us rattled. After finishing the beef, we were left sitting around, wondering what was happening as no staff were coming near us but were positive that we'd ordered the half duck, but were equally positive that the duck from the pancakes was not anywhere near what we'd ordered. We even sent a WeChat to a blogger buddy to check on our expectations. We were just about to complain when the rest of our duck was finally presented on a huge plate. Phew, you can imagine our embarrassment on that one and we learned a lesson about ordering Peking Duck!

The plate of expertly roasted duck was quite lovely. We'd been told that ordering a half a Peking duck can result in a slightly dry duck, but not the case. The roasted duck was dark and luxurious, with a strong flavour that really sets the palate alight (especially if you like gamey flavours). We realise that the rest of the duck gets sliced up, bones and all and we always struggle with getting the duck flesh off the tiny little bones. It was a struggle, but we managed to get most of the duck - success!

There was no time left to order dessert, our ploy of rocking up without a reservation had only been partly successful, so we had to leave without sampling any of the Lei Garden sweet stuff.

We'd had a moderately successful introduction to Lei Garden, but there were a couple of issues that detracted from our experience, which you'd expect more from a Michelin starred restaurant. Firstly, we'd only been given a short time to order and leave before the table was to be used again, but our wait staff pretty much ignored us for the first fifteen minutes. That really put us back a bit. Also, we'd ordered a side of steamed rice each, which didn't turn up until we'd just about finished the last of the duck. Not cool, it should have come with our beef dish, which may have been the difference with that slight fail.

Lie Garden prides itself on it's service and we didn't really think that it was up to standard, which was a shame. The food was quite good overall too, but I didn't think it was any better than a heap of other Chinese restaurants we'd been to that didn't have Michelin stars. I guess, I was expecting a little more from our visit. I was also pretty disappointed that I was told one of the signature dishes was no long on the menu, when it's still online... Not sure what's up with that?

However, I have to give Lei Garden the benefit of the doubt, they managed to squeeze us in when they could have just as easily turned us away. Given that there are six restaurants with a Michelin star, my plan is to check out one of the others, next time, I'll make a reservation.

題外話/補充資料: 初時上菜很快,一下就上了6個,但都沒報菜名,放上就走了,然後就沒動靜了,吃完6個菜等了十來分鐘,開始催菜。服務員問我們上了哪些,沒上哪些(黑線。。。這你問我)。太太比較耐心,和服務員溝通了半天,確定好還剩哪6個菜還沒上之後,一會上了4個菜(中途還有一個之前上過的,我當場說已經上過了。。。)。 但還剩下的2個菜等了十多分鐘又沒下文了。於是又和服務員催菜,這次換了一個服務員,一上來還是不知道我們點的菜,於是又和我太太溝通了半天,終於弄明白了,然後馬上去廚房把剩下的兩個菜端了過來,然後問我們現在就結賬可以不(這麼明顯的催單真的好麼)
