How would you like to have Fries with a sea view on the side, no extra charge? New York Fries can offer you just that. The long anticipated outlet has opened its door to HK-ers a little while ago. There really is a sea view, but let's not forget that the Fries really are the main star here. Founded in Brantford, Ontario (Canada), New York Fries now have over 200 stores across Canada, and also various locations around the world in Korea, UAE and now, Hong Kong. NY Fries use only Russet potatoes, cut and deep fried in hot fat to make their signature fries. The Works, featuring toppings like cheese, bacon, sour cream, green onions and homemade chili meat sauce, are obviously their bestseller; but the item not to be missed is the Poutine, or I call it the Canadian National Dish which is basically a dish of French Fries, topped with cheese curds and a good beef gravy.
I ordered a poutine ($37, Regular). Over the counter I could see my order being tossed into hot oil, as bubbles rapidly appear and the aroma of crispy fries filled the air throughout the store. In no time the golden shards of freshly fried potato were strained and arranged in the black-and-white checkered pare cup. The Fries, skin on and still glistening with a vibrant aura of heat, were made to order. Cheese curds were then scooped and added to the hot potatoes. You can see the vast cubes of cheese quickly melting into fine gooey strings you normally only see on pizzas. Now, that architecturally-sound cheesy fries were finally enrobed with a velvety smooth beef gravy.
Settling into on of the couches indoors, overlooking the bustling crowd outside, I forked through my order, each bite scooping bits of cheese and sauce together. It's merely impossible to separate them apart, now that the cheese, sauce and potatoes have mixed together into savoury paradise for the tastebuds. The fries were uniformly cut, and fried just about right. Cheese curds have a rubbery texture. You may think 'rubbery' is a bad description. It usually is, when it comes to chicken or squid, but when it comes to cheese curds on poutine, if it's not rubbery, it's not cheese curds. The gravy is dark brown, the colour of tree bark, and tasted somewhat seasoned, and an aftertaste resembling Bovril.
The combo, consisting of Fries and a beverage, is a good deal. You can always have hotdog if you prefer. There is a well-stocked seasoning station on the other side of the counter where you can personalize your own order of hot dog with ketchup, relish (chopped sweet pickled cucumber), mustards (English and Dijon) as well as chopped onions. On sunny days you can choose seats outside, overlooking the pier and a good seaview. Fries with seaview don't come together often. This, is certainly something new and reassuring as a fast food joint.
Early vibes have been buzzing that there will be more locations opening up in the next few years in HK and Macau. I wonder if NYF will have a bigger buzz of popularity when it opens more store across this city, but that's the future. In the meantime, I wouldn't mind more visits across town for a taste of Canadian Potato Fries, for the sake of relieving nostalgia, you can say, or just for the fabulousness of potato fried in hot fat. Imagine that...
