A friend and I decided to have dinner in this area (Hau Food St.) but were debating between our options as there were quite a lot of restaurants... we decided we wanted a comfortable restaurant and narrowed down to either 798 Unit or this restaurant which I believe is pretty new. We both in the end decided to come here after assessing their reasonably long menu outside. We both in the end decided to come here after assessing their reasonably long menu outside.
We decided to order:
Yellow Fish Fillet Curry - $59
This looked really tasty when it arrived - a nice yellow colour with a few drops of red oil in the centre on top. The size looked normal but there were actually plenty of fish fillet in the bowl. The portion can be called generous, but it would've been nice if they had more vegetables in them, like the thai eggplant or fresh mushrooms etc.
The sauce itself was very fragrant and tasty. Not spicy at all - well at least in my opinion, which is why I usually order green curry but my dining companion doesn't appreciate spicy food so till next time...! The fish, although the frozen type, was very tasty. It was 'meaty' in a good way, and it was quality fish not the cheap type which some restaurants purchase so to deep-fry them in a thick coat of batter before submerging it in the curry and serving it. No complaints as to taste of this curry! I think this sauce would also go well with beef or beef brisket (both available on the menu). By the way, rice is a must for this dish to mop up all the sauce - there was so much!
Steamed Mullet on Hot Stove with minced pork in soup - $138
This arrived last, and the stove was lighted at the table for show even though our table was tiny.... The fish was larger than I had expected. Though since mullets are the cheap-variety of fish I guess they're just giving you what you paid for?
I have tried this dish in many Thai restaurants before, and I have to say I was slightly disappointed. The soup base was too clear (in terms of taste) - there were plenty of minced pork but little flavouring ingredients like ginger, lemongrass, herbs, spices/chillis or even lime were used. I would've liked to see some if not more of these flavouring ingredients!
Fried Mixed Veggies with garlic - $45
I thought this dish was a little on the expensive side compared to the the other items on the menu. There was a bit of everything in here - kai-lan, broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, corn etc. It was actually very tasty - just enough salt and garlic, but perhaps less oil would've been better because you could see oil it was sitting in. I always wonder why is it that Thai restaurants love to coat their veggies in oil...even more than Chinese restaurants? At least in Chinese restaurants, patrons have the option to have it in 'superior broth', but in Thai restaurants its either fried with shrimp paste and a lot of oil, or fried with garlic in a lot of oil....But anyway, forgetting the oil, it was very tasty...
1 order of plain rice - $13
The rice was the thin long grain type, not too soft the way I like it. Nothing to write home about though.
All in all, a pretty good experience, though it's always better to go to these type of restaurants with more people so you can order more things to try! I vowed to try the green curries or raw shrimps next time.
