As i hang around the Tin Hau area a lot, I figure now I have another new choice when I have a sweet tooth moment.I discovered the place while walking down Electric Road and one of their staffs was handing out fliers. The menu looks interesting so I decided to check out that place. Whoa, the place looks inviting. I ordered the steam eggwhite with milk (cold), similar to the double skin milk. Hmmm, delicious. Another favorite of mine is the tapioca soup with a chunk of yam paste in the middle

The New Year of 2009 started with a chill in the air. After the fireworks dispersed and hours of celebrating, we headed out for lunch, and discovered a new desserterie here in Tin Hau. 石磨坊, with 4 other branches throughout HK, made its HK island debut here in Tin Hau. The decor was simple, with the kitchen upfront, and roomy seating at the back. Smelling sweetly of mango and steam coming out from various pots containing adzuki beans being slow cooked to rough purees, my adventure was exciting as it was before I opened my mouth!

Sensory excitement aside, we got to the menu. Traditional signatures like Sesame sweet soup, and other nutty concoctions made of walnuts, chestnuts or almonds were available hot or cold. ($15 - $21). Herbal Jellies (涼粉, $17 - $38) and shaved ices ($24 - 38) are apparently other popular orders as well. Yet, we didn't come in because we had traditional desserts like slow cooked adzuki bean soup with dried tangerine peel ($13) or "sweet potato in gingery syrup" ($13) in mind. We were here for the specialty signatures here. One dessert this joint is proud of is the "Mango and glutinous rice sesame roll" ($24). It sounded complicated enough, but no worries, when you see it on a plate, it will all make sense. Rice flour was mixed with ground dark sesame to make a batter, steamed to create the 'wrapper'. Then slices of mangoes and steamed black glutinous rice were placed on one end of the wrapper and the whole thing got rolled up, like sushi. Sliced in threes and served HOT. The dessert resembled a sweet rice roll, as the sesame flavour was pronounced with a decided nuttiness to it. The mango could have been riper but the glutinous rice part was sweet and sticky, as it should be. A coconut sauce on the top yield extra moisture to the entire dessert. It's something new for me, and certainly a new combination matching a traditional Thai dessert with a Chinese sweet treat using sesame seeds.

We hesitated at nothing to order two ICES despite the winter chills outside. The Herbal Jellies with fine-mashed adzuki beans and coconut ($26) is a dessert of falstaffian proportions -- meant to be enjoyed langorously to anyone with the mind for a big finish. The adzuki beans were cooked slow and mashed until it yields a fine consistency through a mesh sieve. Then it's piped around the bowl to make a spiral pattern. Under that lies shaved ice of coconut flavour and a bed of herbal jellies. The bean puree was the finest I've tasted in a desserterie and to my surprised it didn't taste cloyingly sweet like the ones you have in a Japanese joint. The coconut shaved ice was lighter and made a perfect sauce for the herbal jellies.

Next up was the Mango Snow-Cone with Coconut ($26), the show-stopper of the day. An improved snow-cone, this one was flavoured with evaporated milk (for richness), coconut milk (the flavour), syrup (for sweetness) and mango puree (for fruitiness). The snow cone was good on its own, but the chunks of golden ripe mangoes made the dessert an irresistible one. The ice part was very solid and it took several forking motions to "take it down". The mangoes in this one, maybe being signature, were sweeter and thicker on the bite (more 'meaty'). At any given moment you'll be working against the clock -- eat fast or the ice melts quickly. This snow cone certainly was something different from the usual "shaved ices" I've had in Azabu Sabo before. This one's on the fruity side, and the scrumptiousness of the mangoes made the whole dish more indulgent, but less guilt for consuming it, for the mind at least.

Halfway through we have already been feeling that lightheadedness from eating ices too fast. Don't worry, the staff are more than welcomed to offer you a glass of water before you finish the rest. The service was good and attentive, and you can never imagine waiting for too long for your order. I will certainly return for their other signatures like the 'Noodles with Mango', in which the 'noodles' were made of rice flour and coconut milk, the same way the "rice roll" mentioned here was made. Creative is this "Stone Mill", I reckon I don't have to go all the way to Causeway Bay to quench my cravings for ices. There is a place closer to home.
