Don't get misled by its look
Grotto

We ordered 2 set lunch: Under the Crust (urchin conchiglioni with squid cake) and Golden Ratio (hanger steak salad). Both came with a green salad and a drink. The green salad is bland - not much sauce, and certainly little flavour. We did not expect much anyway.Under the Crust. The conchiglioni is fair - you could not expect getting tasty urchin sauce by paying $138. But at least you should not sprinkle chopped spring onion over a pasta dish. And definitely the squid cake should be pan-fried. They have blanched it instead, as if we are having a bowl of 墨丸河. That is unacceptable.Golden Ratio. It is disastrous. The hanger steak is COLD. It's like they have pre-made the dish 2 hours ago and just serve it from the fridge. Maybe due to its coldness, the steak bears no smell of Mailard reaction at all. We can only tastes blood of the meat. The salad, as usual, is bland. At the end, we can only finish the veggie, leaving part of the hanger steak for our dog at home. The drink, which is some kind of ginger tea, is nothing memorable but I am afraid to say it is already the best among the meal. Each of the dishes come with a fancy name, but disappointing taste. The food they serve are for photo shooting, not eating. That is totally contrary to the nature of a restaurant. Definitely not my cup of tea.…Read More

MUGISAKI JAPANESE NOODLES
2024-06-19
Arrived at around 6:10pm and got in about 20 minutes later. We ordered both versions of the deluxe ramen available: soy sauce based and salt based soup. Both ramen came with an egg, a few slices of char siu and a piece of bamboo shoot. The difference in taste between the soups was minimal. In fact, both were lackluster in terms of flavour. There was nothing to be remembered. The chef needs to work much harder on the stock which forms the base of the soup. Further, there was too much oil  floating on top. The noodles were also very so-so - the kind that you can get in every other ramen stores in town. Char siu did not have much seasoning. It was poached, not charred at all. Maybe that was on purpose, but certainly not to my liking. It is a bit too fatty as well.Egg, again, nothing special. Not particularly flavourful,  and the yolk not particularly runny. Don't think I need to comment on the bamboo shoot as there was not much that you can expect.Overall, there are much better choices, with lower price and shorter queue, available on Hong Kong Island. The closest one being in Quarry Bay. Not worth to queue up for it. And definitely not worth to take a detour to visit it in Tai Hang. Other Japanese restaurants in the neighbourhood, which are not specialised in making ramen, may even do better.…Read More

The best dessert & cake spot in Southern District
媽子住家糖水小食
2022-11-21
Definitely the best dessert & cake spot in Southern District! It has evolved from a traditional Chinese/Taiwanese dessert spot to a shop also selling western bakery items, after the young generation took over from their auntie, the original owner. The signature dessert, 仙草芋圓, remains to be good after the change of hand, though the 芋圓 is not as chewy as before to my liking recently (maybe they have put in too much taro). What really amazes me are their western desserts. From toffee chocolate crepe cake, fig swiss roll, to oolong tea pudding, all the items I tried were up to standard. Actually they are on a par with products from famous joints that you can find "outside".Have also ordered their whole cake for a few times so far. Currently, they offer fruit cake with cake base of different tastes such as matcha, lemon, earl grey, pandan, etc.. Again, they did not disappoint and were certainly good value for money. It's a pity that it only offers takeaway and provide no seat for visitors. But it's always good to grab something and bring it home when you pass by. …Read More

Crepe without delicacy
La Crêperie
2018-07-19
Came for desert. Ordered a crepe with caramelised apple ($88) and one with raspberry sorbet and strawberries ($82).The caramel sauce tasted artificial and clearly not homemade, not to mention freshly prepared. The entire crepe was covered in that sauce and it made the whole experience of having the crepe undesirable. The crepe itself was quite chewy though. For the berry crepe, the problem lies in the so-called raspberry sorbet. Again, it tasted artificial and it obviously came from brand of lower end. What's more was that the crepe sticked to the plate. It was as if it has yet been cooked through. The crepes did not live up to their price tag. There would be no return.…Read More

態度惡劣/bad attitude
魚蛋佬
2017-09-14
I always feel hungry after work. Therefore, I went to 魚蛋佬 to taste their m fish balls. I made an order and paid while I was taking on phone. I put one dollar coin and five dollar coin on the plastic table or shell. The male staff accidentally pushed the one dollar coin into the rubbish bin. I picked up the coin from the rubbish bin immediately. However, the staff condemned me and said rudely "you treat me like a beggar." It was because I put the money on the table instead of his hand. I could not see any relationship between these two things. I didn't realise there was a notice showing customers should not put the coins on that table. (We usually pay on that way in those snacks or fish ball shops.)nevertheless, his customer service was very bad. Staff can told the customer not to do that in a polite manner but not blaming them. I apologised for what he thought I did wrong or disobey his shops rule. On the other hand, I thought he should apologise as wells towards his bad attitude.Lastly, the quality of fish balls were not good. They were tasteless because the fish balls were over cooked. And the sauce was full of the taste of MSG. In my opinion, we should never pay a visit to that restaurant with bad quality of food and horrible service.…Read More

giuseppe_li Similar thing happened tonight. The lady was very rude and said “don’t put money here!” when I put coins on the plastic cover. Totally not understand the rationale behind. Food was just soso, will not visit for the second time !!!!!

Unexpectedly disappointing...
Le Cléret Brasserie
2017-05-12
Put up a high hope for this place as I heard its chef was from certain branded hotel.Went there for lunch and ordered two sets: sea bass & steak. No complimentary bread was served and so the salad  was the first thing we had. The "green" was all yellowish when it reached our table and that tells how "fresh" this salad was. The dressing was the ordinary vinaigrette and  boring to say the least. The salad did not ruin my mood though cause I came for nothing but the mains. My wife said they were good. There came the sea bass and the steak. The fish was nicely presented. It sat on a bed of mashed potato covered in strawberry sauce. The mash with the sauce was delicious and refreshing. But if you thought that the fish is on par, you are very wrong indeed. The fish was so rank so that I could barely have a second bite. It was clearly unfresh,  if not rotted. The steak was not much better. I ordered medium well but the middle of the meat showed red. I guess the chef was too sloppy to thaw the steak before grilling. The meat, which was claimed to be from Australia, was filled with tendon and hard to cut and chew. The grilled potatoes on the side were quite nice though. We were certainly not satisfied by the savoury dishes and so we ordered a panna cotta, hoping that the meal can have a better end. It was creamy, rich and not bad as a whole but I could tell it had stayed in the fridge for quite a while. At such price in Central, I could have much better choices. The least acceptable to me for a restaurant is that it serve something unfresh. Glad that I only came once.…Read More

Sadly, bad noodles!
Min Saam Gun
2016-11-30
Suddenly crave for a bowl of hot noodles in these winter days. Ordered the $78 beef noodle, with black soup and hard noodle.Had a sip of the soup when the bowl arrive. It is not rich nor strong in beef flavour. The most I can say is that it is MSG-free as I was not thirsty even after drinking quite a lot of their soup. But it certainly disappoints me as a bowl of beef broth.Noodle is the next thing I tried. It is also the component that I, as a noodle guy, am having the highest expectation of. The noodle served here, however, failed me in every aspect. It is quite chewy but tasteless. No egg flavour, either chicken or duck. It is not the kind of noodle that I would expect being served in media-priced noodle places like this. I am afraid to say there are quite a lot of ramen spots in HK that serve better noodle than here. The beef is good though. Chewy, flavourful and fresh. And there's quite a lot of beef, sufficient to keep my mediocre noodle good company. This may be a good place for beef lover. But I don't think I am coming back for their beef noodles.…Read More

Oh my deer, you'd better work on the ingredients
Deer Kitchen
2016-07-16
Am always dubious in trying restaurants which gain loads of popularity out of the blue. We went to Deer Kitchen tonight hoping that it is not one of those traps who pay for food reviews. We had 1 dinner set, plus 1 pasta on the a la carte menu.We picked the Truffle ravioli as starter and the Iberico pork loin as main for the set ($258). It comes along with daily soup (Cauliflower soup), dessert (jelly made with wine) and drinks (orange juice + $3). For the pasta, we have King prawn angel hair ($138).Complimentary bread was served at the beginning. It was not hot, not even warm. Neither was it soft or of fragrance. It failed in every aspects as a snack. It's even worse than what you got from a local spot which serves Cantonese-styled western food. What a brilliant way to start your meal. The ravioli came next. It was the best in the meal. Good combination of flavour and textures. Nothing to complaint about. But the angel hair was what follow. It was a putative chef recommendation on the menu and we soon find out the chef was quite wrong on this. As expected, the "King prawn" was no way near fresh. It was frozen to such an extent that its protean has lost all the elasticity. But it is still incomparable to the angel hair. The problem lies not in the pasta but in the sauce. It is as salty as sea water in Dead Sea. It would definitely give your kidney a heavy attack. We hate to but we failed to finish the dish in the end.The so-called Cauliflower soup was then served. It's the first time I have ever tried Cauliflower soup which is so lack of Cauliflower flavour. It is as bland and diluted as the ordinary "white soup" that you was fed in "Cha Chaan Teng". This is not acceptable. At that stage, the meal was already ruined so much so that it could never be brought back alive by the Iberico pork loin. The pork, though tender and juicy, is lack of the unique "Iberico flavour". It was immersed in large portions of marinade and garlic. Maybe that's how restaurants can maximize their profit by using the below-par raw materials but that's not how you do your customers justice. By the way, the grilled sweet potatoes on the side is not fresh either. We were so glad that we only ordered 1 set as we only got 1 dessert in the end. Suffice to say, you will regret ending your dinner with some heartless jelly holding a piece of artificial-flavoured-cherry.Maybe if DK is named as a Cafe, it will fit the expection of the customers better. I will leave this deer to others.…Read More

Good value and for the money
Yummy Place
2016-06-30
Want to try out this tiny spot in my neighbourhood for a while but some how managed to miss it always. Today is the day. Despite the seats, the place looks like a takeaway spot and that's what I gonna do. Ordered the 豬手菜飯 ($34). It comes with a 酸辣湯 which was complimentary. The meal box was enjoyable. Not only were there generous portion of Chinese cabbage in the rice, there were some lettuce beneath the pork knuckles. The veggie rice was the kind on the healthy side. It was not oily or dry. It was like what you would make at home. The knuckles were favourful, well marinated and tender. The fat under the skin have been cooked away. They are simply awesome. Not a big fan of sour and spicy soup but I managed to finish it. It is not bad.It is good value, whether for the money or not. (Btw, the portion is quite huge.) Will come back to try other takeaway items.…Read More

Try the rice cake!
The Hwaduk
2016-05-02
Not a fan of korean fried chicken, but when it comes to grilled chicken, I am always interested in trying.Had a rough idea of how large a portion of chicken is in Hawduk, so we ordered only a Cheese salad ($88) together with the Chicken with rice cake ($178).The salad came first. It is in vinaigrette dressing. The veggie is crunchy and fresh and goes well with feta cheese. It is simple but not bad a starter for sure. The chicken came just when we almost finished the salad. The meat is quite juicy but sadly, the sauce is disappointing. It is not sweet, nor sour. Simply put, it is not tasty. However, you can safely consume the chicken skin as all the excess fat has gone. Do not expect cripsy skin though. The grilled rice cake on the side tastes much better unexpectedly. It is a bit cripsy outside and extremely chewy inside, which makes a perfect combination. Above all, it is well favoured. I would suggest the restaurant making a separate dish of this.Given the price, the food, the service and the circumstances, Hawduk can secure a first try but not a return visit unless better chicken can be served.…Read More

Believe this is the first review for this place. Regrettably, it must be a crying face.Went for dinner. The dishes all came with a bowl of rice, with the addition of a drink for dinner set. We had 瑤柱䓤油雞 ($48) & 支竹排骨煲 ($60). The chicken is dry, bony, unfresh and lack of meat. It is lack of favour and is entirely unrelated to conpoy. Wonder if this is a trade misdescription. The spareribs pot is even worse. The pot is NOT hot at all. All the ingredients were directly taken out from the freezer and you can expect what that tasted like. The pork is the worst of all as it is fatty and had a strange smell. We failed to finish the dishes and we feel sorry for the food.…Read More

The queue will end
North Viet Pho
2016-03-21
NVP has opened for, I think, over a month. But whenever I walked past it, there was still a queue. Today we finally made up our mind to give it a try.We had the "Raw beef and beef ball Pho" ($52) & "Pork Chop w/ Lemongrass Cold Vermicelli" ($48). We each also got a drink as part of the lunch set. The Pho was served hot, but not piping hot. The first sip of the broth did not leave a deep first impression as it is short of strength and too bland to be authentic. The raw beef and beef ball are ordinary and did not add much to the bowl. The pho is most disappointing as it is clearly overcooked or not "cook to order". I like the onion and basil in the broth but I prefer there be much more. The Cold Vermicelli did not do better. The sauce to go with the vermicelli is, again, too standard to be memorized. The sides/the green can be offered more generously. The pork chop is already the best considering it is not too dry but I would like it to be fattier. The coconut drink that I ordered (+$6) is better than the food. The red bean that goes with it is sweet and favourful. All in all, time will prove that the food in NVP does not warrant a queue. Its price was also set too high in this region. The existence of the queue that due to the lack of direct competitor in the vicinity would end soon if the food quality could not live up with its price.…Read More

Bonjour Bakery
2016-03-20
Not a fan of savoury pastry and so picked the Earl Grey & Pomelo ($26). It is not too extravagant for breakfast considering that it can stuff me for twice, at the very least.Consumed a night after the purchase and reheated it in the oven. The smell is tempting, the taste is even more so. Earl grey is everywhere, not too strong, coupling with reasonable amount of dried pomelo cubes. Needless to say, the dough itself is soft and chewy. It rebounces well after every bite. There's finally a bakery with quality on the east side of HK island. Can't wait to go back and try their other popular items.…Read More

Pig specialist???
The Fat Pig
2016-03-12
There are more and more restaurants by the name of "XX by Chef Y". But if you think you are really getting food comparable to that done by the chef (or at least acceptable to the standard of that chef), you can be totally wrong. The Fat Pig is one of them. The first plate we had is Chopped pig's trotter on sourdough ($45). It has a really strong favour similar to 豬腳薑 which is not bad of itself. The problem is you cannot taste any "pig" at all. Wonderful for a restaurant specialized in doing pork.Pork belly, apple glaze & burnt aubergine ($98) is the next. I must say the pork belly is great given it's cripsy skin and fatty, tender meat. What went wrong is the purple mashes on the side. It tasted weird and did not work with the pork belly. Had no idea what that is.The main we ordered is Pork ribs with rice and coleslaw ($348). The best part of it however was the coleslaw as it was rich in cumin. The main character pork ribs were overloaded with seasoning. It is way too salty even if you had it in rice. The coleslaw can help to balance the flavour though. (It would be much better if the coleslaw is double of its original size.)Lastly we ordered the Deep fried pork ears ($58). The pork ears are clearly lack of favour if you eat them alone but the caper dipping sauce did save the dish. (Regretably, some of the pork ears are not fresh...)I will not return for the pork belly, given the price and given the overall quality. I thought TFP can make a difference out of the restaurants opened in shopping mall but it seems my hope has fallen through. …Read More

Chewy egg waffle!
Eggs Bakery
2016-03-06
Arrived before 10pm, not much people in the queue. Ordered egg waffle ($14).The shop is flooded with eggy smell which is mouth-watering. The waffle is made to order and so it is hot reaching your hands. The portion is standard. It looks no way near those "plastic" egg waffle which I scare the most. The crust is crispy and the center is half-filled with chewiness. It has been long since I last met one which is equally crispy and chewy. My friends said it is a bit short of egg flavour but to me, it is just fine. Not too sweet and not too bland. You can feel that you are having waffles freshly made from eggs. Will come back to try their 格仔餅. Eggs Bakery well illustrates it is better to focus on a few products you are good at than to create loads of flavours that are not really up to standard.  …Read More
