Tasty Contemporary Fine Dinning
restaurant Akrame
2014-10-01
This is a contemporary fine dinning place.  It was not too crowded but yet full by 9pm on Friday. The menu was simple, just 4-course, 6-course and 8-course are offered.  We picked the 6-course at $998 per head.  In fact, 2 additional courses, Milky (cheese) and Sweetness (dessert) were served on top of the 6's.Amuse Bouche - The Olive/Yogurt was light, Parmesan/Anchovy cookie was tasty and Endive/Salmon roe was refreshing.  These 3 small pieces set an enjoyable tone as well as expectation of the meal.Vegetable (Grilled Cauliflower/Orange Blossom) - It delivered an interesting start....  not because of its taste or presentation but it reminded you to watch out what to be coming next.Spicy (Crab Meat with Red Curry Sauce topped with Granita Beer, i.e. forzen Guinness) - this was not really that spicy but the red curry and the frozen Guinness added to the crab meat did help to stimulate our appetite for the meal.  Shell (Razor Clams / Grapefruit / Green Beans) - a very well executed dish that delivered a complex feel of tastiness.Surprise (Lobster / Consomme / Celery) - the Lobster was served raw but the hot consomme transformed it to semi-cooked.  A new experience to me and it tasted really great. Sailor (Meagre / Quinoa / Parmesan / Lemon) - though this was a river fish. it was well cooked and presented.Chicken (with Turnip / Oyster) - though just chicken breast was served, it was tender and tasty. Milky (Comte Cheese / Mushroom / Chicken Consomme) - this is again a new tasty experience with cheese served with chichen soup.Sweetness - 3 different pieces of dessert offered freshness, warmth and comfort to end the meal.  I must say that this is one of the best contemporary fine dinnings that we experienced lately.  It is fine but not complicated.  We will have this experience retained in memory and will visit again for more. …Read More

The Chairman
2014-09-30
…Read More

Contemporary British Cusine
Aberdeen Street Social
2014-09-26
This is a rather new hot spot and we could manage to secure our booking 2 weeks in advance.2 of us ordered 2 starters, 2 main courses, 1 desert and 3 glasses of wine.  Here are my comments:StarterRoasted Quail Breast, Confit Legs, Sauteed Foir Gras ($245) - this is good especially the roasted quail breast.  We do find the confit legs a bit harder than expected.  Nevertheless, just do not know what to be suggested for improvement. Raw Hokkaido Scallops ($228)- It was well seasoned and presented.  Overall taste was good and up to expectation.MainSnapper, Clams, Celeriac, Confit Lemons and Sauce Meuniere ($268) - this was good.  It could deliver a seaside feel.Sea Bass ($308) - this was also well cooked and presented.Dessert ($110)A bit weak for memory.WinesA good mix of wine that could be ordered by the glass at comparable pricing to most fine dinning outlets.  Overall, I think it was an interesting experience of this contemporary British restaurant that I would encourage dinner to try.…Read More

Pizza underbaked
HMV Kafe
2014-09-01
We were looking for a simple and light lunch this Sunday.  We picked HMV Kafe becasue it is close to where we live.  Have ordered a salad, a pizza and 2 drinks for 2 of us.  Here are my comments to the foods.Seared Tuna Nicoise Salad $88 - the vegi was crisp, tuna was fresh and dressing was light/just right taste.  Overall, it was okay. HMV Kafe Breakfast Pizza $108 - poorly done as the pizza base was not well baked.  It was prepared with use of a small pizza toaster (the pizza base was ready-made), proabably not much improvement can be expected. The cafe is still okay for a drink but it would definitely not a place that we would consider going back for food again.…Read More

Sushi Dokoro Hikari
2014-08-25
…Read More

Home Style French Cooking
Les Fils à Maman
2014-08-20
It was Restaurant Week in early August, Les Fils a Maman was one of the participating restaurants that attracted our attention because of their home style French cooking.  The promotion dinner menu ($328 for 3 courses) offered most of their specials.  Our starter was Baked Snails in wrapped pastry.  This was good though I would prefer it to have a bit more sauce. My wife took Chicken Blanquette as main course.  Delicious, truely home style cooking.  The sauce was great and we have to ask for more to go with the rice.My main course was Sole Filet in white sauce.  Well prepared and very good taste. Our desserts were Chocolate Fondant and Pain Perdu.  Both were good and delivered very well the classical french style. They wines that they offered by the glass were reasonably priced, the Cote du Rhone Rouge ($65/glass) and Languedoc Rouge ($60/glass) that they recommended were good.Their service was adequate relative to the bristol positioning.Overall, this is an approachable and friendly French bristol that you can visit frequently without worries on the bills. …Read More

PUTIEN (Lee Theatre Plaza)
2014-08-18
…Read More

SEIRO Steam Course
Gin Sai Japanese Restaurant
2014-08-16
…Read More

Italian Foods in Japanese Style
Trattoria Queen Hollywood
2014-08-16
We were attracted by its unique positioning (Italian foods in Japanese style) as well as the positive comments from various reviews. The restaurant is quite small, just about 18 seatings in total. Our visit was on Saturday, we could only get seated at the exact time of our booking but not earlier.Me and my wife ordered 1 starter, 2 pastas, 1 meat dish and 1 dessert. Here are our comments:Chef Special Veggies ($150) – the veggies were very fresh, colorful and crispy. They went well with the anchovy dipping. Though the serving was a bit small, it delivered an enjoyable experience.Spaghettini con Vongole e Cozze “SAKE” Bianco ($250) – this was cooked with SAKE and with plenty clams, mussels and squids. I would rate this as one of the best Vongole pasta in town, both taste and value.Spaghettini with Urchin & Caviar ($380) – Since they divided this dish in 2 separate portions for us to share and each was added with a half boiled egg as sauce, I found the taste of Urchin and Caviar diluted out a bit due to high volume of egg. If it was served in regular dish with just one egg, it could probably be better. Overall, this was a well presented dish that would register some memories.Sauteed French Duck with fig sauce ($320) – this was delicious, a clear demonstration of the chef's skills and passion.Pannacotta & Chocolate Pudding ($100) – the pannacotta was very creamy.  It should be one of best in town.We have also ordered 2 glasses of wine. The Japanese red (Kayagatake) was good but just a bit expensive ($150 for portion at around 125ml). It could be of better value if you order at bottle.Overall, we were happy with this restaurant because of its high quality of food and service. Though price per head may be a bit high to most people, this is still a good choice when you are looking for an occasional treat.…Read More

Still out Top of Mind Choice after 4 visits
QUEMO
2014-07-19
Quemo is a busy Spanish restaurant that offers consistent atmosphere and taste.  This is our 4th visits since their opening and I must say that she is still our top of mind choice for a classic, simple, tasty, well served and happy Spanish experience.2 of us have tasted the below in this ocassion:Beef-heart Tomato Salad with Tuna Tataki ($70) - this small portion was just right for 2 pax.  It was simple but it delivered clean and refreshing taste.  This was a perfect starter.Marinated Anchovies ($68) - it delivered the traditional savory and fishy taste in a pleasant manner.  It was good to go with the mini toast but it also went well on its own.Razor Clam ($168) - Simple preparation but just yummy!Fried Egg with Foie Gras & Mushroom ($138) - this is Quemo's signature dish that we would always order.  Iberico Pork Chop ($198) - this is a good value choice.  Quemo Cheese Cake ($58) - it was not presented in the traditional cheese cake format but it delivered a good mix of flavours with use of the fruit sauce and chocolate ice cream. The wines as recommended were just fine for the meals. We wished there could be room for paella but we decided to leave it to the next visit. The overall atmospher on Friday night was great.  It was busy but not over crowed.  Staff were friendly and offered just adequate attention to our needs.  No doubt we will be back from time to time.…Read More

Junichi Japanese Restaurant
2014-07-06
…Read More

Traditional Izakaya, a bit pricey
Youka
2014-06-21
Having stayed in Shanghai on my own for a few years, izakaya(居酒屋) was one of my usual dinning places as I could have 5-6 varieties in small portion at pretty reasonable prices.  Plenty of good traditional izakaya selections due to high Japanese population working and living there.  Since my return to HK, there has been far less occasion for visit.Youka came to our attention because of some favourable comments collected from the press.  We (me and my wife) were attracted due to its traditional style as per those reports. We started with Corn in sprouted (fresh raw corn from Hokkaido), this was delightful, crisp, sweet and refreshing.  Though this is a bit pricey, it is highly recommended. We then had 1 portion of seasonal sashimi (Isaki) and a few sushi.  These are all very fresh and of high quality standards. The hot dishes ordered were:- Minced Chicken & Tofu Pot - this was good- Cooked Fish in sweet soy sauce (Arakabu Nitsuke) - it was tasty but the fish was a bit tough which may due to freshness issue.  This is not a recommended choice though its price ($280) was okay.- Ayu Fish Salted Grilled -  fish was very fresh.  I suppose because it was from Japan and was in season, this was quite expensive at $90 for a tiny fish.- Veg Inaniwa Udon - this is good as expected.Overall, I would say that this is a good izajaya style restaurant but the pricing would not be for everyday visit.…Read More

Need more effort on taste ......
The Principal
2014-06-21
We were attracted by their saying: "menu stays true to the continual exploration of new tastes, textures and techniques, using the finest ingredients and methods both traditional and innovative"I can confirm that they have made great effort to design and present the dishes but I think that they do need to spend a bit more effort on taste to ensure the delivery of memoriable fine dinning experience. There were 3 fixed menus to choose from: The Expedition (10-course), The Excursion (8-course) and Digustation Vegetarian (8-course).  Me and my wife took the Expedition and Exursion respectively.Based on the 10-course, dishes that performed really well were:03 Crab (Flower, Leek, Chive) - it was light, crisp and refreshing05 Carabinero (Red Prawn, Black Rice, Allioli, Essence) - the red prawn was really fresh and the sauce enhanced its taste excptionally well08 Babybel (Brillat Savarin, Truffle, Beetroot) - it delivered exactly what their philosophyDishes that were interesting but probably not great enough to register sufficient memories:02 Sea (Uni - Caviar, Calamari, Sea Cress, Quinoa)04 "Poie" Thai (Steam Foie, Thai Consomme, Radish, Sea Grape)07 Lamb (Shoulder, Masala, Yoghurt, Okra)09 Violet (Violet Ice Cream, Rose Meringue, Goat's Yoghurt)10 Gianduja (Praline, Sweet Potato, Brown Butter Ice Cream)Dishes with improvements needed especially taste:Amuse Bouche - though this would not aim to deliver great taste, overall taste was a bit especially the ball with alcohol inside01 Street Food (Bun, Taco, Laksa) - while the roasted pig taste can be detected from the bun, it was not giving any help in elevating taste expectation because of its starchy nature06 Garoupa (Grill, Balinese Marinade, Smoked Coconut, Sambal Mentah) - the sauce and garnish were okay.  However, the garoupa could not deliver the fish tasteOverall, I think the menu delivered what they attempted as per their philosophy.  I think the number of dishes were too much (though overall volume is okay) and the high frequency of placing, removing and exchanging dishes and folks/knifes were undesirable.  At this point I would rate our overall experience as okay.  It would not be on our prefered list for fine dinning.…Read More

Sorabol Korean Restaurant (Lee Theatre Plaza)
2014-06-14
…Read More
