Brass Spoon
2024-10-24
It pains me to find Brass Spoon is slipping as this is where the pork chop rice rescued many a lunch through three years of Covid isolation and the delicious pho on the weekend was something I look forward to.   The lemongrass pork chop used to be full of flavour, expertly marinated and grilled to perfection, with a fried egg on top to satisfy a hungry stomach, all sit on top of steamed rice and finely sliced tomato and cucumber salad accompanied by pickled carrots juliennes.  Not this last time - the pork chop was bland, tough in texture, pale white (i.e. not marinated as before), the egg was over-cooked and with no seasoning, no runny yolk either.  Such a disappointment - how could they let standard slip this low?   it's a sad discovery and I am afraid I won't be back for a long, long time. …Read More

Suddenly had the urge to eat beef brisket pot, so I ordered it on app.  Food arrived within 30min, very efficient!   It was satisfyingly hot when arrived, full marks to the delivery guy.  As for the taste, the beef brisket was cooked well, flavour and texture both good, but the parsnip was very disappointing - thinly sliced, no taste, no texture and strangly lukewarm.  Maybe the chef added these at last minute.   I was expecting larger pieces with some sweet-ish flavour.   The egg white fried rice was very good.  The Korean style sesame oil spinach was very tough in texture, and lacking in flavour - a huge let down.  So a hit-and-miss takeaway meal. …Read More

Decided to give this a try as haven't had Korean food for a while and the reviews are very complimentary for the dishes served here.  Arrived to an empty restaurant on a Sunday evening and ordered three dishes from the a la carte menu: whole fried chicken, beef cold noodle and grilled wagyu steak.  Curiously it took well over 30min for the food to appear without any explanation.  Another table was seated later than us but was served first - perhaps the set up is geared to set menu rather than a la carte.  Anyway, the chicken arrived first after the long wait, was satisfyingly hot and crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside, though taste-wise it was on the sweet side.  Next up was the beef cold noodles, surprisingly good taste and the noodles were quite chewy, well balanced by the pickled parsnip slices.  The grilled wagyu steak was the least good out of the three with a coarse fibre and somewhat lacking in taste.  Maybe we should have gone for the tasting menu after all but doubt we will want to return. …Read More

Bonheur
2023-01-17
Happy Friday dinner and pleasantly surprised to the upside by the quality of the food at Bonheur.  Wine-friendly and very good service by the team, with introduction to the menu and insight into each dish, also suggestions to share the daily special was much appreciated.  In the end the cost per head came to over 1k but we all felt it was worth it as we had such a good time.  My favourite dish of the evening was Linguine "Bonheur" with chilli, garlic and termite mushrooms,  it is even better than the pasta with Spanish red prawns that the waiter recommended.  The cheese platter in the end was a little underwhelming for such a wine-friendly place, perhaps some effort should be put into better cheese selections.  …Read More

Reasonably good choices are offered in various menu options, wine list quite extensive and contains some trophy bottles though the mark-up  and corkage is near the upper end of current market standards.  Individual dishes are quite good:   Smoked Seabream / Pickled Turnip / French Yuzu - refreshing, nice presentation, good tasteEscargot / Mushroom / Pastis Sauce / Tarragon - rich and creamy, with a hint of spiciness, the diced mushroom taste better than the escargotYAKIFRENCHY - the Chilean Sea Bass / Caramel Spices was great but Pork Belly / Garlic was over-cooked and chewy, though the flavour was intense and could be further improved if bread was provided.Scorpion Fish / Charcoal / Bell Pepper Vierge Cherry Vinegar - very good both in terms of texture of the fish and the e bell pepper accompaniment Pot Au Feu / Vegetable / Horseradish Cream - classic winter dish but light on flavour, could perhaps have more soup and served in a bowl rather than a dish to keep warm and moist.  Poached Fresh Pear / Red wine / Cinnamon / Whipped Cream / Milk Ice Cream - very goodHot Camembert / Baguette / Honey (+$38) - this one was far too large in portion, 8 pieces of toasted baguette and a whole bowl of melted camembert,  it can be offered as main course to share!  …Read More

Hao Tang Hao Mian (Fashion Walk)

Heard a lot of good things about this one and finally decided to give it a try.  Location is a bit more difficult to find but once there I knew what I should have done out of CWB MTR.  The queue wasn't huge on a Friday evening but still meant a good 15min wait which somehow built up the expectations.  Once inside and being seated, the ordering process was efficient and my noodle was served pretty quickly, with the side vegetable following shortly after.  Firstly the noodle - full mark for that, just the right amount and the right texture, cooked exactly right.  Next the chicken - of the many pieces I had in the bowl, most were very tender and succulent with only the odd one lacking in flavour.  The mushrooms were good and the "cotton" was interesting addition.  The soup itself was on the salty side with full flavour and high viscosity,   perfect when slurping noodles with it but not so easy when drinking as it is - I found out later to mixing the side vegetable soup with the chicken soup to achieve what my palate found pleasant balance.  Side vegie - underwhelming, could have been better, on the day it was chinese cabbage.   Overall a solid show for the cotton chicken soup noodle.  Would be back to try the other flavours - but only when I am in the area.   …Read More

Disappointing meal
Charisme Pavillion
2022-08-16
Perhaps we need to gather more friends here for a more elaborate meal in order to sample a good selection of the cuisine, but our dinner for two has been quite disappointing.  Booking process was smooth and the full menu was sent via WeChat.  We therefore had plenty of time to pre-order: starter of fried bean curd sheets, hotpot of beef with fungi and dried lillies, fried string beans, lotus-leaf steamed rice.  The starter came pretty quickly and was rather nice. There was then a long interval before the string beans arrived, a very generous portion, after ten minutes the plate was just as full.  We had to chase for the hotpot beef to be served, which was a bit strange as normally one would expect the meat course to be served before the vegetable course.  Unfortunately the beef was disappointing as it was thinly sliced, while the texture was tender but the taste was lacking, and there were far too many fungi and lillies relative to the beef.   Again there was a very long wait before the steamed rice arrived, so much so that I took a recommended steamed soup that was just so-so.  The rice was the best dish, fragrant with the lotus leaf, tasty with  diced mushrooms,  shrimps, meat cubes etc.   The whole meal was strangely imbalanced and the serving order erratic,  quite disappointing for the high price charged.  …Read More

Out of the ordinary
Backstreet Steak House
2022-07-19
Small restaurant with a difference:  very strict house rules regarding the provision of water of all imaginable variety - quite a good laugh if you get the gist.  We took the dinner menu and chose our steak - and we were pleasantly surprised by the amount of food being served.  Welcome white wine was refreshing,  New Zealand Sauvignon blanc - sweeter than normal but perfect to quench the thirst in the hot weather.  Small bites for starter - all quite well executed and we can see the chef put in a lot of thoughts and effort into this.  Memorable ones among the barrage of starters include the soup which was unusually sweet in taste and the airfreighted Spanish bread that goes with it,  and on the downside was one cold starter with cured beef that was rather tough to chew and not much taste.   The main course was the highlight: we ordered onglet and bavette steak cooked medium-rare, both came with mash potatoes and other condiments, steak itself had nicely charred outside and satisfyingly pink/red interior, texture was rather similar with the bavette a tad more sinewy,  but with the meat rather on the cold side, we guessed it might have been cooked sous-vide first and then quickly grilled to char the exterior before serving en mass - the restaurant has two sittings with the change over around 8pm, so pretty much every table was served more or less around the same time, so if you arrive late, the meal can be quite rushed, but if you arrive early, it can be quite a leisurely pace.   Set dinner finished with desserts that's very good quality.  …Read More

Yat Lok Restaurant

Haven't been here for a while so gave it a try for a lunchbox, plus a portion of blanched choi sum.  The portion size was on the small side, the roasted goose were mostly skin and bone, but the little meat that I managed to gnaw off between the crispy skin and hard bone was surprisingly tasty,  how I wish I could have some more meat!  The choi sum was perfect, good texture, good temperature, very pleasing green.  Not cheap and would I go back?  maybe not for a long while. …Read More

New place still waiting for liquor licence  so it's BYOB which is great.  Food style is quite a lot of fusion, with Japanese ingredients and Western cooking techniques or some update of recipes, like a grilled eel on top of paella which was cooked more like a risotto but with no sauce left, it worked strangely well together.  A fried courgette flower was stuffed with a ricotta-like mousse made with scallops and prawns and it fooled everybody, we had to order a second round to be sure.  The truffle-infused sauce was too overpowering though.  Other dishes were all quite well constructed but not so memorable, modern Japanese fusion food. …Read More

Good steakhouse
REX Wine & Grill
2021-08-25
During the soft opening Rex only serves dinner.  The entrance is very low key to the point that one easily misses it - I sure walked past it a couple of times without noticing.  Descending a long stairs with many turns one eventually gets to the dark wood-panelled room, very traditional steakhouse ambience though with some modern elements to bring it up to date.  Limited menu choice, to me it's a bonus point as the restaurant should be focussing on what they are good at, in this case, steaks.  I went for the USDA striploin and it looked a lot bigger than the 16oz suggested.  The steak was perfectly charred on the outside while satisfyingly pink and juicy on the inside - it's cooked to medium and I think medium-rare might suit this cut better.  Taste and texture both rank among the best I had in HK.  Couldn't finish so I had the leftover bagged, made a salad the following day and sliced the cold steak - still delicious and I had a deconstructed steak sandwich for lunch.  …Read More

Not as good as Peel street
La Vache!
2021-07-03
Closed on Mondays so I went for Tuesday lunch with a friend, no online booking for parties fewer than five people, walk in only.  Arrived early but still queued up for more than ten minutes before we got a nice corner table at the first sitting for lunch.  We were told the steak was ribeye so we ordered medium, but it turned out the French entrecôte wasn't exactly the same cut as ribeye, it's probably closer to sirloin as the steak was quite thick and uniformly lean, there was no centre fat spot (the eye of the ribeye) so the texture was quite dry.  We fondly remember the thinner-cut steak at Peel street which came swimming in a pool of juice and that was delicious, which was the reason why we wanted to dine at La Vache!  Perhaps this leaner style would suit some other taste but we wanted that fattier and juicier style.  …Read More

Jan Jan Kushikatsu (Kui Chi Mansion)

Booked more than a week ago and telephone confirmed yesterday, I chose the lunch set with four grill dishes plus a main course, upgraded the drink to a beer for extra money.  A small salad was included in the set and it was tiny, I found the complimentary cabbage leaves much better than the salad.  The grill came pretty quickly:  chicken leg was two small pieces with juicy texture and good taste; beef tongue had three pieces and the first two were perfectly grilled, great texture and taste, the third piece being thicker and bigger, was a bit under-grilled so that got quite chewy; shiitake mushroom was standard; the grilled yam was delicious!  Main course was pork belly wrapped rice ball, smells good and taste even better.  This is a surprise find and very satisfying.  I have space for perhaps half a portion more but decided to leave room for dinner.  Probably would be more fun with several friends together to try more varieties.  Overall not a bad lunch, though a bit pricey. …Read More
