We'd become pretty regular customers of SoHo's La Vache - mainly because by Hong Kong standards the traditional French 'steak frites' joint is incredibly great value.

La Vache is super popular too. In the past, we've turned up just before opening, only to find a huge queue of hungry diners waiting to feast on some decent steak and all-you-can-eat frites! The place fills up so quickly, it's pretty unbelievable.

So it's equally unbelievable that Wan Chai's own steak frites joint le Relais de l'entrecôte isn't just as popular!

I'd know about le Relais de l'entrecôte for quite some time, but it wasn't until we signed a lease on an apartment in Wan Chai that we decided to finally get along to check it out. As much to get a feel for the dining scene in our new neighbourhood as anything else.

There are a couple of entrances to le Relais de l'entrecôte, there's an elevator that takes you upstairs to the rather grand entrance, as well as an escalator a little further along Queens Road East. You get to the dining room through a long walkway that has bright red wood paneling, and has prints depicting cute and arty Parisian drinking scenes.

Our reservation was for a Saturday night, as I was pretty darn surprised to see a mostly empty dining room at a time where I'd have expected a packed space. The bright red theme continued inside the dining room, which was dark and had an intimate feel. A feeling that was enhanced buy the closeness of the tables to each other.

As is the case with most steak frites joints, the menu was pretty straight forward. A set price per person which includes a green salad with walnuts, steak and french fries - served with the le Relais de l'entrecôte special sauce. The only question you're asked is how you want your steak cooked, with our choice being medium.

Like a well oiled machine, shortly after we placed our order, a bowl of warm French baguette as delivered, as well as the girl's house red. Accompanying the bread was a plastic container with some imported unsalted French butter. While I appreciated knowing that the butter was French, the plastic container looked a little cheap and out of place in the classically decorated restaurant. I'd have much preferred a slab of salted French butter on a plate and maybe a short explanation of the butter's origin!

Our green salad quickly followed and as far as salads go, it was pretty simple, different types of green lettuce with a light dressing and walnuts. I'm not going to spend much time talking about the salad, but I did enjoy it, and it whet my appetite for the steak to come.

Le Relais de l'entrecôte uses a trimmed sirloin cut as their steak of choice, not that we'd have been able to tell visually. Our steak came completely doused in their special sauce and to be honest, we were a little despondent that we didn't ask for the sauce on the side.... A feeling that didn't last long though, the way that special sauce was given to us was just perfect. In fact, the quality and cooking of the steak, along with the liberal coating of the sauce were sensational. There was a slight bite of parsley in the creamy sauce that I just loved and really made the sauce pop!

We had a little misunderstanding at one point though! The approach of apportioning out the steak at le Relais de l'entrecôte was that they only serve up half to begin with, while the rest stays heated over a candle on another table. We initially thought the serving size was a bit stingy, that was until our waitress brought over the rest of the steak and more of that delicious sauce.

Sticking around for dessert, my classic creme brûlée was superb, one of the best I've had in Hong Kong. Served quite traditionally in a shallow ramekin, there was the expected cracking sound as I broke through the brûlée on top and the creamy custard underneath was sweet and beautifully consistent.

It's hard not to compare La Vache to le Relais de l'entrecôte, they are so similar in their approach it's spooky! Where La Vache is a funky spot with a cool interior and a real buzz, le Relais de l'entrecôte seems to be much more traditional in its approach and the interior of the dining room.

I have to say that I was much more impressed with the steak and special sauce from le Relais de l'entrecôte, with the lean and perfectly cooked steak and unctuous sauce being my clear favourite. However, lighter and crunchier French fries are much better from La Vache, evidenced by my inability to say no when offered a second or sometimes third helping.

One of the mysteries of Hong Kong dining is why restaurants that essentially have the same menu and serve the same food seem to have such differing fortunes by way of customers. Well, maybe not such a mystery in image conscious HK - there is no doubt that the hip and cool feel of La Vache helps drive customers through the door!

What a shame! I genuinely think they're missing out!

話說朋友推介呢間專食牛扒既法式餐廳,連雜誌都有介紹,咁點可以唔去試一試。一行三女子去食,一入去既裝修都係簡約既歐陸風情。。非常寬敞。。。咁meau只有一款既main course 牛扒,另外有drink list and 甜品meau...而且牛扒係每人咁叫,佢會分兩轉上菜,薯條係任食,前菜有沙律。。。牛扒配上佢地特有既綠色醬汁。。但汁既味道太濃,食唔到牛扒既肉味,而且佢係薄切牛扒,雖然係好冧,但係冇口感。。但甜品方面,叫左個紅桑子巨塔,呢個甜品真係不得不讚,食完咁濃烈既食物之後,再食一個咁清新既甜品,所有膩既感覺完全冇晒,加上佢三層既焗蛋白脆脆,一d都唔太甜,配上紅桑子雪葩+雲尼拿雪糕,真係一絕我會較喜歡呢到既甜品多過主菜,下次可以黎試甜品再加杯甜酒,的確係一種享受。。。😊😊😊😊

Seeing the atmosphere and decoration on the review so decided to come with my hubby. We expected they only serve one dish and we are looking forward to. We order very quickly as they only serve one dish. Yet, the waiter checked on us every minute which is kinda annoying. We order a medium steak. The salad came very quick, it is regular, nth special. The bread is good which keep me eating. Then it comes the steak. I am not happy because they dont serve ketchup for my fries. They insist me to eat

Then it comes the steak. I am not happy because they dont serve ketchup for my fries. They insist me to eat their sauce instead. The sauce is alright, can tell there is lots of butter. 難得悠閒拍拖,來兩杯酒不過份吧?由老公拍板點了一紅一白:La Constance, Chateau de Saurs, Gaillac, 2012 ($78) 及 Chardonnay, 2013 ($68),而最後只得他一個在飲,因為酒來後才想起脫牙後的抗生素未服完,暫時我還不能飲酒!而酒的份量又十分滿,可想而知有人又貓了...

有選擇困難症的朋友,很適合來這裡,因為店內只供應單一套餐。這晚市及週末適用的 Menu ($288/位),內容包括 Green Salad with Walnuts 及 Steak & French Fries with it's uniqle sauce

咬了兩口法包,較硬放棄了(但那牛油很好吃!),先吃清新的沙律。沙律菜很新鮮,配上合桃清新爽口,最妙是醬汁味酸鮮香、十分開胃,兩口子很快就整份吃個清光~

最初我點了 Medium (M),脂肪不多的牛扒肉味香濃,好吃但稍咬口我會咬得較累。後來試了老公的 Medium Rare (MR),軟腍易吃很多,於是忍不住提出轉為 MR;殷勤有禮的侍應告訴我牛扒其實已煮好,不過也照樣可以幫我轉,十分貼心呢。

其實相比牛扒本身,更加勾魂奪魄是結合了牛油香濃、香草香氣,以及芥末惹味的醬汁啊!連同之前的沙律,真心覺得這店用醬汁如神,吃完牛扒,靠這醬也清了超多薯條~

非常不容易的,選出了 Vacherin d'été ($88);成品以三層蛋白脆餅,夾著紅桑子雪葩及雲呢拿雪糕,加上忌廉、紅桑子醬及新鮮紅桑子。蛋白餅微甜鬆脆,配以酸甜雪葩,非常清新消滯,老公大讚;我則較愛香甜雲尼拿雪糕。成品份量足、賣相佳、味道又好,真心很讚!


特別一提,沒長腦子兼心急為食的兩口子,紛紛往中間的雪糕/雪葩挖空,結果當然是甜品要倒塌了!細心侍者馬上拿刀叉來幫我們將甜品解體,再放置好離開。細心可見一斑。

個扒黎啦! 一層好厚既"招牌"汁,  顏色比較綠, 而味道好nutty, 如果可以簡, 我唔係將個扒沈係d sauce到, 可以放係side, 我想點時先點。 而主角 - 我塊扒, 一定唔係rare, 講佢係medium rare都只係比較仁厚.... 呢到既扒, 可能預備時 "揼"過, 因為個texture 有d偏左,所以牛柳應有既口感唔太達到。 而d chips 都係任食, 但唔太熱, 感覺冇第2間岩岩炸先拎出黎既咁新鮮....都係個句, 可能, 係我唔識欣賞真正法國既味道。

食完個set, 真係唔敢叫甜品~~好在我係set 買一送一, 如果唔係, 真係喊得出!

Le Relais de l'Entrecôte

在等待牛扒的同時先吃沙律和法包, 實在是沒有太大的特別。而法包也顯得有點韌, 不似是當天餐廳自己做的。亮點落在餐廳所使用的小盒裝牛油上, 非常香滑。如果有機會看到有賣的話一定帶回家去。

很快牛扒就送到了。點了medium rare的我很滿意牛肉的顏色, 看似做得不俗。一份牛扒量不算多, 目測大約是5oz~6oz之間吧, 已經切開成四大塊。但一入口, 卻讓我失望。主要是牛扒的質感不好, 肉質是奇異地鬆散。感覺是在煎牛扒前沒有充分地解凍好。在一家專賣牛扒的地方吃到這樣的牛扒, 不違言真的很不滿。

特製的香草醬汁也不見得太特別, 未可以挽回分數。倒是薯條做得很不錯, 薯香蠻濃的。

今次用了Entertainer 2015的優惠, 免去了一個light lunch 的價錢成 了約HK$234.6 兩人 (HK$168*2+30, +10%, -HK$168), 但即使如此, 我還是覺得這樣質素的牛扒不太值得。雖然深知晚上來吃的話質素會比較好, 但我實在是再也沒有信心了。要吃, 還是回La Vache! 比較安心。

朋友聽聞這餐廳幾出名所以定了位食lunch試試。午市餐單有兩款,light or heavy lunch set. 差別在於牛排份量和有冇dessert。因為是lunch 而且第一次食,所以大家都撰了$168的light lunch。先說環境,地方清靜,三五知己聚聚閒談的好地方。今次沒有影相因為 main course 獨孤一味, 牛排,其他食家已在openrice post 過,全是一樣,只是不同覺度而已。 食物方面,先說沙律,應該是caesar salad 吧,汁過多所以咸了點。牛排煎得不錯,我叫的medium沒有血,肉帶點粉紅,但牛排沒有牛肉味,對於牛排愛好者會有點失望。聽說主角是醬汁,但沒甚麼特別,味道帶咸有點French mustard 味,個人應為醬汁可以分開上會好點,因為醬汁太多fries都被浸軟了。雖然撰了没dessert餐,但最後也order 了apple tart ,而coffee and tea 是跟餐送。整個餐最滿意的就是dessert and coffee了。總體來說,好奇一試無防。

Made a reservation and got a table immediately as there were only two or three tables occupied, when we arrived.  However, more tables filled up later (I think our reservation was for around 7.45 p.m.).Don't expect many choices for main courses on the menu but we were anyway going for steak frites and that's what we got. We ordered one each; it came with a free-flow of fries, a plate of bread for the table bread and a salad each.  The beautiful plate of baguette was very tasty with French butter

Our steaks were then served, with a huge stack of fries on the side.  The fries were, sadly, nothing special and not very w
arm to the touch.  They seemed to have been sitting around quite some time. My partner was sure they were packaged fries. Neither of us could finish our first serving of fries. 

The steaks we ordered done medium rare.  They were perfectly done, a hint of pink, without oozing blood all over the plate.  
The sauce, I can't place what it was but I didn't find it outstanding.  Given a choice, I would have asked for it on the side.

When we had done with our steak, we were feeling a bit like "hmmm... that was nice but not really quite enough meat", when the waitress came round and said "ready for your steak?" ! Ah yes, totally forgot that at some steak frites places, they reserve half of your meat so that you can get it served up warm, later!  Wonderful.  So we had another half of the steak served and then felt full. 

Still, since dinner went so well, we thought we must try dessert. I ordered the creme brulee and my partner got the profiteroles.

The creme brulee came at room temperature (or slightly chilled) under the perfect sugar top.  The sugar top (?) wasn't too thick nor too thin, making it easily crackable and light in the mouth. The custard below was milky, flavoured with fresh vanilla pods.  Maybe one of the best creme brulee I have had anywhere, I could have had two all by myself. 
According to my partner, the profiteroles were equally good and very rich. 

As for drinks, I just had water (served in a really nice bottle) while my partner had two bottles of 1664 beer.

The total bill came up to HKD$966, inclusive of 10% service charge.

All in all, it was a good dinner and we will definitely return.  
Other Info. : Ask for a window seat if you want to look out onto Queen's Road East, better than being stuck amongst other tables or in a corner.

牛扒上桌時,仍然可以看到牛扒medium rare熟度的那份紅潤感。

牛扒本身肉質稱得上是軟腍,沒有多餘肉筋。脂肪比例很少,肉味只可以說是中規中矩,沒有太大驚喜。整道牛扒之所以得到味道的提昇,其實全是依賴那食店獨家泡製的綠色醬汁。

綠色醬汁的配方不得而知,但那混合了青醬及牛油香的復雜味道,的確令人食慾大增,回味無窮。綠醬,才是這理要賣的看家本領。

伴牛扒的那半碟薯條,也認真夠大份。薯條做得夠熱夠挺身,蘸綠醬吃也同樣美味。雖然食店的薯條是無限任添,但除非你真的餓了数天或是天生薯條控,否則一碟薯條的份量其實已足夠令人捧腹。

服務員看見第一輪的牛扒吃得差不多的時候,便會主動送上餘下後半部份的牛扒。

由於第二部份的牛扒先前是被碟子蓋住再擱在燭台架上保溫,慢火的洗禮等同把牛扒再slow cook慢煮多一陣子。

結果是,第二半份的牛扒再不是medium rare,而是變成medium的熟度。

同一頓用餐可以一次過食到兩種熟度的牛扒,其實亦正是食店的特色所在。

食店的鎮店之寶,亦是最為抵吃的甜品

吸睛的甜品由一球雲呢拿雪糕,一球桑梅雪葩,再加蛋白脆餅及奶油忌廉層層疊而成。甜品再倒上桑梅汁。帶酸的桑梅雪葩與醬汁與傾甜的蛋白脆餅及雲呢拿雪糕相互平衡,令人吃得開胃亦不覺滯。

同一頓晚飯已經是第三次吃雲呢拿雪糕了,今次是伴牛油薄脆。薄脆餅鬆脆富牛油香,吃時不得不把薄脆敲碎。用一片片的脆餅花瓣黏起雪糕或奶油同吃,很有兒時吃雪糕新地的風味。

聽過好多人講過呢間法國牛扒,話去巴黎一定要試今次終於去左灣仔呢間試試先去到環境真係好靚 好似去左巴黎咁 枱布紅紅綠綠咁去到唔駛諗食咩 要左個medium rare 的牛扒先先食個沙律 味道ok d核桃好味仲有法包都唔錯 之後重頭戲牛扒上場 佢先上半份 然後淋D好香的汁 唔知係咪香草汁?咖喱汁?總之好香好味 點黎食薯條一流 個牛扒都OK 個汁先覺得係重點薯條甜甜地幾好食 之後再食埋未上果半份 好滿足之後 聽講甜品好出名我就叫左個profitrole 試試好好味 朱古力個sauce 唔會太甜 剛好加埋泡芙雪糕  真係唔錯下次要試第D款甜品!好多都好吸引!價錢灣仔區黎講好抵食 個環境仲要咁靚 好有feel
