The restaurant looks well nice and flavours of the food was nice but its portions were disappointing. I ordered the buckwheat ravioli main dish and it only had 5 raviolis and some bak choi for the cost of over 160.. I think it mightve been 186. Or another dish the lotus root meatballs, 2 for around 80$. Are we fine dining? I don't think so..?

But that's the price you pay for vegetarian food in Hong Kong: either you go to the Buddhist place, where there's no booze, or you got to places like this. Hey, the food can still be good.

Unfortunately, the food isn't all that good at GP. It's not terrible. It's just pricey and mediocre at best.

Pan-fried gyoza, "Almond Dan Dan Dressing. Szechuan Peppercorn Vinaigrette" $68. The dumplings were a little floppy. They weren't really shaped like gyoza, and they weren't all that crispy from the pan frying. Still, the filling was reasonably good, and the dressings were judiciously applied and pleasingly subtle, that is, not overwhelming in the least. You can get an entire meal of veggie dumplings in this town for what we paid for these three, but they were alright.

Lotus root 'meatball', "Garam Masala. Home-Roasted Marinara. Tree nut Cheese Pecorino" $78. They give you a 2-page glossary with the menu so you can figure out what the menu items are supposed to be. Most dishes have more post-nominal letters than an insecure IT professional's business card. For example, this one is V.GF.BF, which I assume means "venomous; gently fascist; boils funny." I didn't read the glossary.

The dish comes with two 'meatballs', but we talked them into giving us a third-- didn't check how much they charged us
. The best way to think of this is that it's like falafel-- crispy on the outside, and then kind of a grainy interior. But the interior is made of lotus root, so it's crunchier and juicier than falafel. It's an interesting dish, but I don't think I prefer it to either falafel (the thing it's most like) or vegetarian arancini (the thing that looking at it, I most wished it was).

Fried free-range egg on kimchi pancake, "Sriracha Cashew Mayo. Nori Salad (GF.BF.NF)" $118. How do you ruin a kimchi pancake? I mean, seriously, the best kimchi pancakes I've had are fantastic: crisp and fluffy and kimchi-infused and spicy... they just make you want to stuff the whole thing down your gullet. The worst ones I've had were still pretty good. Well, until now:

Vietnamese yellow curry, "Grilled Kiffir Tempeh. Lemongrass. New Potatoes. Eggplant. Coconut Milk. Steamed Short Grain Brown Rice (V.GF.BF.NF)" $138.

The curry was pretty disappointing. The sauce was really thin and just ran out under the rice, and it didn't have very much flavor. The amount was kinda small and there weren't too many veggies, plus the eggplant I got was completely soggy. I mean, eggplants be soggy, I know, but this was a little next-level. Also, does anyone actually like tempeh?

An ethnic plate (yes, that is what it is called), "Dal Makhani. Scrambled Tofu. Crushed Kasoori Methi Aloo. Moroccan Carrot Salad. Pap-en-vleis in Berbere Spice. Pickled Kohlrabi & Wild Arugula. Teff Injera (V.GF.BF.NF)."

I'll be breif. Dal makhani is good because it's creamy; this was too dry. Scrambled tofu, boring. Methi aloo, don't remember that part. Carrots: fine, a few overcooked. Pap-en-vleis is meat and maize porridge, I have no idea what that means in the context of a vegetarian restaurant. Salad was fine. The injera wasn't really sour enough.

In the end, the food hadn't healed me. I guess I only had a few mosquito bites, a couple of pimples, a scratch or two, some razor bumps, a hangnail, a touch of imposter syndrome, and maybe a little gas, but alas! I'm still pretty much the same now as before. So at least in its stated, primary mission, the restaurant is a failure.

Luckily, I didn't go there for medical treatment, I went for food. Unfortunately, the food isn't that great. It's not terrible. But for lots of the food here, you can pretty easily get much better, equally vegetarian, versions elsewhere. Veggie dumplings? Fast, easy, cheap, and delicious, all over town. Veggie kimchi pancake? Wherever Korean food is sold-- pretty much guaranteed to be better than here. Veggie curry? Most Thai places make a fairly good one. Sure, it's hard to find those things all under the same roof, but notice what happens when you do: Grassroots Pantry is jack of all cuisines, master of none.

If you don't believe in the magic, there's really no reason to come here. But I guess if you don't believe in the magic, you probably already knew that.

No, they simply DO NOT understand the meaning of reservation. We wrote to reserve our seats nearly one month in advance to be placed at a corner table, hopefully quieter than the rest, for a special occasion to celebrate with our loved one.
Grassroots replied saying YES they WOULD arrange a corner seat for us. To our surprise, on the day the receptionist sat us down at the centre of the restaurant by the walkway to the loo, the busiest spot where the wait staff ran in and out with dishes. I thought we deserve a nicer table than any walk-ins would have gotten by making the reservation a month in advance for a special ocassion, I was clearly mistaken.
As Nelson, the manager/ the person who’s suppose to take care of the reservation, tried to understand the situation, all the effort he made was to excuse for the poor arrangement they had made, saying that all the corner tables were taken by other parties who arrived earlier than we did. OH YEAH? I sure saw that with my own eyes. HELLO? Isn’t it what reservation is meant to do – to keep just one table vacant until the expected guests arrive at the scheduled time? We weren’t even late at all!!

So, thanks for the first taste of grassroots and the unforgettably kind arrangement, we are probably not coming back.

my Top 5 Restaurants/Cafes for Eating Vegan/Gluten-Free in Hong Kong

I am actually sitting in this lovely vegan cafe in Soho as we speak at this moment! Their new pantry in Soho is a two-storey large space in a very nice setting. Even if you are not a vegan, you can still still a coffee/dessert/drink on a weekend day and hang around a bit.
From all the vegan restaurants I’ve visited in HK (and trust me I’ve been to A LOT) Grassroots Pantry probably has the most extensive menu. This can perfect attest to the fact that a vegan diet can be anything but boring. I was literally astounded at the creativity of the owner of this vegan eatery for coming up with such a variety of choices for not just vegan but also gluten-free and nut-free choices here, especially considering the fact that HK is not as mature as the US or Europe in terms of its vegan customer market.
So what do they offer here. Anything on a traditional vegan/healthy eating restaurant of course including salads, kelp noodles, acai bowl, and all that jazz. But you’d be surprised when you can find creative dishes with Southeast Asian and Japanese/Korean influences in their creations. Kimchee pancakes, “tuna” hand rolls, curry spring rolls, vegan green thai curry, Szechuan stir-fry, Unagi, etc. And 90% percent of them are vegan and gluten-free! I have yet to try all these amazing looking dishes but from the salads and a couple brunch items I’ve tried including their tofu scramble, gluten-free bread and cashew nut butter, none of them ever disappointed!

Don’t forget to check out their dessert selections as well. They have selections of vegan gluten free cakes, cookies and pralines to choose from. Personally I didn’t care much for the taste and texture of their pastries but they are definitely healthier than others.

My ratings:
Flavor – ★★★★
Environment – ★★★★★ (It’s actually pretty much a nice sit-down restaurant and can be a spot for special occasions.)
Price – ★★★ (Most items are above $100HKD and it could be slightly lower IMHO.)
Location – ★★★★★ (in the heart of central SOHO)
Vegan/gluten-free options: ★★★★☆
Overall – ★★★★
Recommendation: Kale Salad and brunch items

Grassroot pantry when it was located at their original address located in Sai Ying Pun, has been one of my favourite restaurant serving delicious vegetarian/ vegan food that is closer to what I grew up with in Australia and England.

Their popularity grew, and they have to moved to a bigger premises and I'm pleased they are on hollywood road located, at the old press room space. It is spacious, lovely high ceiling and plenty of seats as well.

I often joke with my carnivore friends that I'll dump them at Blue butcher next door, and I'll go indulge at vegetarian heaven next door at grassroot pantry.

It is a bit of a hipster vibe, food was really over priced when it first started back September 2015, and I'm glad they have refined and tune down the prices since. They wanted to go for a fine dining route, but I guess it turned out it wasn't as popular as Peggy (owner) has imagined it. Still what they have now on the menu is pretty good. They have also recently introduced a $198 lunch menu, it is a real bargain, I encourage you to go try it out.

Back to the menu, here are some of my favourite dishes.
The ethnic plate by far is one of my favourite. The early days of grassroot pantry when it first moved to hollywood road, especially the breakfast and even the mains were all on the small size, I remembered having three course meal and still left me hungry. This ethnic ethopian/ indian plate is good to share between 3-4 people as a starter, or a very filling main for one. It is still under $200, so that's a plus.

I like the curry, and also the 'eel' nori rolls. Both done really well and very tasty. They also use a lot of hedgehog mushrooms, for example in their kelp noodle dish. In chinese vegetarian cuisine, they often use these mushrooms to mimic the texture of meat. It is tasty and at least it isn't processed like the mock meat at restaurants or supermarket.

The 'lamb' hot pot was rather disappointing, it has some bean curd and vegetables with fermented tofu/ sauce. It wasn't anything special... taste was ok... but could be better.

I'm not a huge fan of the dessert as it is sweet and very tiny for the price you pay. So I often go without it. Except I opt for their Tumeric latte or moringa matcha tea. Both are great inventions. Tumeric has a lot of great warming medicinal properties, and the way they make it is very tasty. I highly recommend it.

Service can be a bit more responsive. Overall it is good. Faster service if you sit at the bar where the drinks are served. Great place to have a cup of tea/ coffee, and read too.

All in all, I will still go back, less for breakfast, as I find weekday set lunch and dinner to be better for value.

Ordered 2 scrambled egg dishes with a toast and a shake each. Table had seeds on it from previous diners, and seating was cramped. Dish came with sautéed mushroom and spinach which were blend and soggy - really bad. Scrambled eggs were OK, but blend. Dishes were covered with a green masculine mix - I can get better one ready made atwellcome or park n shop. Toasts came in uneven sizes (my wife got a tiny one), both burnt. They were served in such a way as if the chef try to hide the fact he burnt

Shakes were good, but that's about the only thing that was good.

Service was super slow and inattentive.

Price was ridiculously high for lunch: $425 for 2 people, 2 shakes and 2 scrambled eggs.

What a rip off.

In terms of food, the quality was good. Eggs were runny and toasts were nice and crispy. In terms of services, staff were super inattentive, I had to ask twice for my pepper and chili flacks, by the time they got to me the dish were cold already and I was already more than half way through my food. Also I had to ask them 3 times to clean my table and give me cutlery and water.  Super annoying.
