The first time having lunch at The News Room. No need to queue up for table. Only the pretty waitress at the door is smart, but those serving us aren't.Environment is poor with table too close and it was extremely noisy environment for lunch, considering the price/positioning of this restaurant, just like a Cafe De Coral. The food quality is general or below average, soup is tasteless, beef is overcooked.
Only the dessert is fine.

At this price level $180 per head, I will not vist this restaurant any more and would not recomment other to go there. There are so many choices out there

Craving for pancakes lately and there isn't many good Western places near my house, so The News Room is it.Ordered a fresh grapefruit juice to wake myself out. Sour to the max! Good for digestion though. The got myself a Blueberry Pancake with Bacon. At first i thought where were my blueberries! The taste is overall ok. Not as greasy and big as the American ones (say goodbye to 'health'!). Still, it's pretty good since i was dying for pancakes. Only recommendation, ask the server to serve it hot and steamy. It was a bit cold by the time i got it.

The sandwich was a pleasant surprise. The steak was seared to perfection and was succulent and juicy without being undercooked. It was paired with a fluffy white bun with a soft crust. The dish also came with my favourite type of fries – shoe-string fries!! Crispy, fresh thin slices of fries…mmmmmm

Rather than eating the fish together with the batter, my dining partner had a strange way of eating this dish whereby he would remove most of the batter and eat the fish fillet on its own. I’m glad he did so because I got to taste the freshness of cod fish without being distracted by the batter. Nevertheless, the batter was crisp and was not swimming in a pool of oil.

This option was originally not on the set menu but was later added as one of the options had been sold out. Hangar steaks are sometimes unpopular due to their relatively stringier texture in comparison to sirloin/ribeye steaks. However, if it is prepared and cooked in the right now, it is comparable to more expensive cuts of beef and this was what was successfully done here. The steak was slightly pink in the middle without it being bloody, its juice giving it a rich flavour.

This is a perfect place to come to if you are looking for a casual lunch at a comfortable place away from the hustle and bustle of Taikoo Place. Being part of the Pressroom Group, their quality of food mirrors the type of standards they have in their other successful restaurants. I highly recommend this place if you are looking for something different from the local eats around the area!

After a whole half day busy schedules, time to have yoga glass to stretch a bit before going back to work. Thinking to try the lunch here but after reviewing the negative comments from other members, feel a bit hesitate to take the risk. Instead, choosing a non-peak hours to enjoy a glass of wine and snack.At around 4:30pm, there were only 2 Westerners enjoying their early happy hour, another sitting outside, I was the 4th. At around 4:30pm, there were only 2 Westerners enjoying their early happy hour, another sitting outside, I was the 4th. There are indoors seating area but rather dim, sitting by the entrance seems the best as I can enjoy the sunshine, while cooling with the air-cond.

Happy Hours starts from 4pm, 50% off for selected beers and house wines. Haven't said that, actual 50% of marked up price (5-star hotel price)is nothing really attractive.

They have a mini snack menu, serving sandwiches, burgers, crab cakes and seafood platter, oysters. Charging on average over $40 each oyster of something ordinary made me feel hesitate.

I ordered a glass of white wine the crab cakes...looks quite presentable, first bite...feeling "meow meow", kind of cat food feeling. True, I strongly feel that, no kidding. However, it doesn't mean it tastes terrible, just not worth the price.

Overall experience was not bad, nicely furnished place, quiet, located inside Taikoo Place, can say it's a good choice for a drink during non-peak hours if you work or work out nearby like myself.

Either improving the food quality or lowing the price to make it justified. Also, please play some music, no need to be loud but it's rather boring to drink wine/beer without rhythm.

筆者是條徹頭徹尾的大懶蟲,以吃喝玩樂為終生目標,吃下午茶也是開心的因由。今次,來到太古坊對出的The News Room,與朋友喝點東西,談談未來的玩樂大計。餐廳外邊是酒吧,裡頭便是用餐區,下午茶時間來吃少許東西的,就是坐外面了。四周圍瞄下,除了傳統的酒吧位外,更設有自助買酒機,愛紅愛白的,自己動手便可以。由於晚上另有飯局,不能食太多,點了客Sharing Platter,朋友多吃一點,我食小小便可以。其實,Sharing Platter的份量可不小的,有大蝦、蜆、炸魚條、煙三文魚同埋蟹餅,聽落都覺得豐富。既然如此豐盛,逐一介紹下食物吧。先吃的是炸魚條,熱得燙口又燙手的,咬落香脆,裡頭唔會硬,亦絕不是一陣雪味的,很好吃。而沾上Mayonnaise,就更加開胃。三文魚也是挺新鮮,還有著煙燻的味道,個人是滿意的;蟹餅同樣是夠晒香口,又頗厚身,裡面的蟹肉絲澎湃,味道鮮美,愈食愈滋味。重點是用碗盛著的兩味海鮮,大蝦份量巨型,肉質爽口,蝦頭位置的蝦羔更是甘香迷人;蜆未算很大隻,然而十分新鮮,爽口之餘,滲出白酒的香,極之美味,懶理晚上再有晚局,也要多吃幾件。沒有飲酒,只要杯Ginger Ale,有

generally speaking, paying $165 for this is totally unworthy. hot dishes are way too salty and you will need lots of water.
talking about WATER, i'm really annoyed that the waitress did not mention that STILL WATER costs $30 per bottle while they actually provide FREE water. And without asking us, she just simply got another bottle and filled up our glasses. I don't mind paying for what i have had, but i believe that i deserve the right to decide whether i would like to order WATER or not

The lunch costs us around $430. It wasn't much but with such substandard food and service, i will never come again.

先上的法式小食併盤,有豬肉腸、鴨肉腸、鴨肉醬批、巴馬火腿、莎樂美腸、烟鴨胸、橄欖、酸瓜及醃蔥頭等。當中最出色是以豬肉做成的白肉腸,味道濃郁帶點彈牙的質感,好吃。鴨肉醬批也不錯,是在巴黎吃到的味道,配梅醬、酸瓜與麵包同佐,一流。

原本本少爺想吃 Prime Sirloin,可惜無貨,只有 Hanger Steak 與 Rib Eye,最終挑了 Rib Eye。這個燒得極好!要了medium,外面燒得焦香,內裡肉質仍嫩滑,肉味香濃,也不會太肥,只是略用鹽調味就足夠了,非常高分之作。

也要一讚與牛扒同上的炸薯條,是粗身的 wedges,香脆不油,點上番茄汁,也很不錯吃。

整頓晚飯連 8 杯 house wine,埋單 $2,100,食物是好吃卻有點肉赤 。本少爺建議偶爾來這裡慶祝一下特別日子比「撞手神」光臨會更適合!

Having read a local newspaper article about the emphasis this place puts on good wine, I went with a friend to check it out.Reaction: Big Disappointment. 1) They have a wine machine to dispense drinks by the glass, of wine that is isolated from the air and therefore better preserved. There were something like 10 bottles of wine in the machine.......but they don't use it. I sat in the bar for about 2 hours and never saw the machine used. Reaction: Big Disappointment.

1) They have a wine machine to dispense drinks by the glass, of wine that is isolated from the air and therefore better preserved. There were something like 10 bottles of wine in the machine.......but they don't use it. I sat in the bar for about 2 hours and never saw the machine used. A customer who wants to use it is told he has to pony up $500 for a card, so "why don't you just drink the wine from the bar instead."

2) The wine from the bar is stored in bottles with vac-u-vin stoppers, but the staff never used the vacuum pumper, so they might as well have been open to the air. The wine from those bottles reflected the lack of care; I drank one white and one red and both were slightly "off" already.

3) The bar has one of those open-front affairs, which (on a hot and muggy night) made the bar uncomfortably humid (like so many elsewhere in HK) and allowed us to smell the smoke wafting in from the smokers stationed at tables right outside.

4) We looked at the menu of "bar snacks" which consisted mostly of full dishes (things like burgers) with prices starting about $75. Too much for bar snacks, IMHO. So we didn't eat.

5) Staff was not particularly friendly or welcoming. I guess their newness was showing -- they didn't seem to know what was going on.

The moral of the story is that it takes more than hype to make a decent wine bar, and this place is long on the hype but short on everything else.

五月下旬‧有雨得靚靚公關的招待,一次過試了這裡大部份的菜式,詳情不在此發表了,要說的是一杯雞尾酒。這裡以幾位著名記者的故事命名的雞尾酒,包括Hemingway Daquiri, La Stampa Spritzer, Pulitzer Punch,較有印象的是一杯Nixon Sour。Achade Domenico加上檸檬及蛋白,酸酸的味道,在夏天而言夠晒醒胃。而這裡的食物,是不錯的。

總括黎講, NR既services有待改進, 論裝修可以比高分, 論食物質素同價錢都算中上.

Menu is similar to The Press Room (its parent group)and décor slightly more modern than the classic bistro feel of The Press Room. Normally I don’t have any particular urge to rush to try new restaurants. However, what caught my eyes on the menu was the USDA Nebraska Prime Rib Eye steak on the menu – it’s the same kind that Grand Hyatt Steakhouse (GHSH), the hottest steakhouse in town these days, offer. I visited GH Steakhouse not long ago and tried the ribeye, so I wanted to see how this place compared (with the mindset that this is not a steakhouse, of course)

Some of my friends do not eat beef, so we ordered a variety of food to share.

- Chargrilled Toulouse Sausage – the flavor was ok but the pork sausage was a little too dense and dry. A bit more fat would have helped
- Chargrilled Merguez Sausage – good gamey lamby flavor but again, too dense and too dry.
- Pâté de Campagne – rather ordinary with the pate texture a little too “rough" and crumbly
- Duck Rillettes – not very memorable; again too dry; more duck fat would help
- Bayonne Ham – quite nice and moist, though not exceptional
- Saucisson de Lyon – Same as above
- Smoked Duck Magret – Same as above
- Ox Tongue with Salsa Verde – Not much tongue flavor, though not dry. The parsley flavor in the salsa verde was overpowering everything.

Interesting combination. Needed to slit the ravioli to release the truffle flavor which infused the whole soup. Lukewarm and tangy and appropriate for the summer. I was ok with it but didn’t fall in love with it.

- I always love goat cheese and the combination of sweet red onion and tangy and gamey goat cheese was great. But there was way too little goat cheese in the tart. It should be called a red onion tart with goat cheese.

- The very “crunchy” (note: not crispy) coating was interesting. The texture of the crab meat was quite shreddy and lacked flavor. It didn’t have the “lump, juicy” crab cake effect. There are better crab cakes out there.

-This was what I wanted to try, and I wasn’t disappointed. Before I visited the restaurant I already expected (and warned my friends) that the restaurant wouldn’t have the same type of grill to create the fantastic char and crust on the steaks like Grand Hyatt Steakhouse.

The rib eye was cut much thinner than the gigantic rib eye at GHSH (the largest size here is 12 oz compared to 18 oz at GHSH). Despite the lack of crusty char surface, this ribeye was actually more flavorful than the one I had at GHSH. It was also cooked to the requested medium rare and was tender and moist. Most of us had been to GHSH and were pleasantly surprised by this flavorful ribeye here.

-Naturally the sirloin was a bit “rougher” in texture compared to the ribeye. Although the meat was quite moist and flavorful, there were some connective tissues that were harder to bite through. I personally much prefer the ribeye to this sirloin.

There is also a hanger steak option on the menu which I am interested to try next time.

- The skin wasn’t crispy but the meat was soft and fairly moist. However, as expected, it was particularly flavorful and the sauce was much needed to enhance the overall appeal of the dish.

- I hate to say it, but this really tasted like chicken
It lacked the gamey flavor and the firmer muscular texture of wild games and animals. The rabbit meat tasted so mild and soft (and luckily moist), I think most people would have guessed chicken if not told. The overall flavor was fine though, with the spinach rolled inside the meat. The potato puree was quite yummy (though not as good as GOLD's truffled potato puree)

The fries or chips at The Press Room are great and here it’s no exception. Crispy and hot, they were gone in no time.

The pear didn’t seem like it was poached (unless you mean poached in water
) and had just a little sweet sugary flavor to it. The cinnamon ice cream was actually inside the pear. The tropical fruit “soup” was very summery with passionfruit being the dominating flavor

Service was friendly but still needed some polish, e.g. lack of butter knife, no refill of water. Before the meal started, one of the staff accidentally poured wine onto my 2 friends (their clothes were quite wet) and didn’t do anything except for a simple “sorry”. But the assistant manager handled it very well in the end.

Overall, I think the ribeye steak was definitely the highlight of the night. I will go back just for the ribeye. The starters we tried were quite mediocre, and the mains were slightly better. There are actually plenty of dishes that I would like to try, such as the braised oxtail and kidney pudding, the hanger steak, the rump of lamb, and the peach tarte tatin.

Besides dining areas, The News Room also has a bar, a pretty big selection of wine from different regions and by glass, and an attractive 4-8pm 50% Happy Hour. Located right in the middle of commercial areas in Taikoo Place, it’s a good place to hang out and relax with your friends after a long day of work.

I won’t call The News Room a destination restaurant, but with the lack of comfy French bistro food in the area, this place fills the niche. If you are looking for French bistro fares in a relaxing environment in the area (not agnes b Café, I hope), The News Room will work for you.

NOTE: OK for most of the food, Smiley Face for the ribeye and the Chips.
