This small food court seemed to be very busy all the time and they did not have enough space. It's not easy to get a seat here.
I was quite hesitant about dining here so I asked the staff whether they'd serve the sauce and the rice separately if I order take away, making no assumptions!
The guy at the counter said sorry and flagged down another lady who spoke Cantonese. ( I then realized that almost 1/2 the kitchen staff were Japanese, interesting! ). She told me that it's available but you need to add a few more dollars for take away.
Luckily, we got two seats after a short wait and some aggressive seat grabbing.
We ordered "Omelet Cheese Curry Rice" ($65) and "Tomato Omelet Curry Rice" ($65). It's $5 dollars for the orange juice but $20 dollars for the Perrier.
I saw the staff moving around quite efficiently and were cooking (or at least reheating) the curries in the half-opened kitchen. They certainly looked quite professional. It took them a while though, as we needed to wait for about 10 minutes for our curries, which I find a bit long considering the fact that the curry stock should have been prepared beforehand and it wasn't too busy at Izumi.
Anyway, our numbers were called and we collected the curry from the counter. I don't understand why they didn't use the number system installed. It would make it so much more easier for customers.
"Cheese Omelet Curry": Decent presentation with lovely looking cheese sauce with some parsley flakes sprinkled on top.
However, surprisingly, it wasn't aromatic at all.
The cheese wasn't too strong and I believe it should be mozzarella cheese. The parsley taste was quite weak though so I figure it shouldn't be fresh parsley. Just for the colour instead of the taste. Having said that, the cheese mixed pretty well with the egg and the curry. Unfortunately, the egg taste wasn't very pronounced (nevertheless, a lot better than the tomato omelet I ordered).
The rice was quite soggy and was not good (see my comments below).
However, the egg, the cheese mixed well with the beef based curry.
The overall effect was not spectacular but OK.
"Tomato Omelet Curry":
This certainly looked quite nice at first sight as well.
The omelet was quite soft and was relatively tender. However, the egg was bland and tasteless! It was watery but barely had any egg taste. I think it probably had a lot to do with where they imported their eggs from. Imported Japanese eggs are really quite aromatic. Eggs from Thailand are also quite tasty. The omelet at Kitchen J were much better, much more tasty than here (because they used salt, pepper & some butter as well).
The good thing was that the chopped tomatoes were fresh (but not too sweet - so probably just ripe but not ripe enough). However, they should probably squeeze the excess water out of the tomato before adding it to the omelet. It diluted the already weak egg taste significantly.
Curry stock:
To state the obvious, curries are made of herbs. It depends on what meat or vegetables you wish to add into the curry mixture. I believe beef are never added to Indian curries. In fact, some Indian friends I know are vegetarians and I understand that being a vegetarian is extremely common in the Indian subcontinent. My observation is that eating less meat improves my temper and make me calmer ( that's why I stopped eating beef).
Sometimes beef are added to Japanese curries. Other Japanese restaurants provides curries with pork, chicken or just vegetables.
The curry stock here was made of beef. I found a piece of beef in my curry.
I don't normally eat beef so I wasn't too happy about the lack of warning.
I later realized that most dark colored curries, like those provided at Izumi curry, and probably those at "Go Go Curry" & "Gin Curry", should be made of beef.
Level: You could choose between "Normal", "Level 1" and "Level 2". My wife's curry was "normal" level and mine was "level 2". Both curries were basically similar to the "Java Curry" brand available. Java curry is a stronger type of Japanese curry which has only very little sweet taste but a sharper and harsher spicy taste that hits you directly and immediately. Not very complex though.
The spiciness level was stronger that most "normal" Japanese curry shops and most homemade Japanese curries (like "S&B" and "Vermont" ). Possibly like 1/10 of a vindaloo curry as opposed to a Tandoori curry.
Even at level 2, I didn't break a sweat. The normal level was a little bit sweeter. I think most could easily handily the spiciness here. All in all, acceptable but nothing spectacular. Those at Kitchen J were a lot spicier but also more sweet and complex. I prefer those at Kitchen J.
Although they appeared to have used Japanese rice, the rice had no taste whatsoever...
We then noticed the favorite list:
I suggest sticking to the customers top favorites to have a better experience.
All in all, pricey for the quality I'm getting.
Conclusion:
So all in all, I cannot recommend Izumi because I didn't like my tomato omelet curry, which I find too soggy and bland. I wouldn't discourage you from trying it as I haven't tried their signature dishes.
The curry stock is similar to a "Japanese Java Curry", which means its not sweet and more spicy. I didn't think the taste was complex enough. Not for those who do not eat beef.
The omelets were quite nice. The one mixed with cheese was good but not the one with tomato, which diluted the already weak egg taste.
Normal service.
Not particularly cheap.
I prefer Kitchen J. However, if you do decide to go there, perhaps stick to the beef curry dishes.
Kitchen J.
題外話/補充資料:
1992年爪哇咖哩的廣告.
女主角說她想吃牛肉咖哩。
牛開始逃走。
她說"你往那裏去呀!?
