I love Chinese food and how intricate it can be. Using simple ingredients, it can be an amazing meal. But to have a really good one, it sometimes means you need a larger group of people. Luckily, I have friends who also love Chinese food and we search out the really old school ones. No fancy gold leaf or cute pig shaped bao. We want the truly traditional. Luckily, I have friends who also love Chinese food and we search out the really old school ones. No fancy gold leaf or cute pig shaped bao. We want the truly traditional. I guess since we all grew up in North America, we just grew to love eating in Chinese restaurants. It was something we did every weekend. 


Boyfriend suggested 新光宴會廳 (English name: Hsin Kuang Banquet Hall) as it was near where he lived. He said it was very old and had been here for over 30 years in Wong Tai Sin. But when he walked by on his way home, he realized it had moved to San Po Kong. So, we gathered some friends for a get together.


Technically, it wasn't hard to find. It's right across the street from Mikki Mall. But I think we went in the building to what we thought was the front entrance? And some how we ended up going through a billards center.

Like any traditional Chinese restaurant, you are greeted with a series of tanks filled with live seafood. This place is also interesting in that there is a ballroom where people dance every night! We took a peak and yes ... people were dancing! Apparently, if you order a minimum food charge, you can dance till your hearts content! Apparently, these types of ballrooms were popular in the old days of Hong Kong but they are now phased out. But not here! Still keeping the tradition alive!

The restaurant is very typical of most traditional places. Menu is in Chinese only. They also have a tea and peanut charge. The five of us chose a few dishes.

The braised ox tail was amazing. A bubbling hot claypot of ox tail that was so soft, the meat literally fell off the bone. The carrots were soft and sweet. And the sauce ... wow. Rich and savory.

This was boyfriend's choice: wagyu beef cubes  with potatoes. The beef was moist and tender. The savory sauce coated the soft potatoes well.

This was  my favorite: luffa with Century old egg and tofu fish puffs. I loved the tofu fish puffs here. A very firm yet meaty tofu puff and not the typical soggy ones I've had before.

Whenever we get together, we always order the winter melon soup. This place did it a bit different in that it didn't give you half a winter melon and cooking it away. Instead, it sliced a layer of it and let it cook away wrapped in the soup. This gave you more soup and the melon came out even sweeter. It was also easier to dig around than other places we've been to for this dish.

This is a BBQ roast meat platter of pork belly and char siu. I love char siu and this was a good balance of fat and meat. The glaze was just right and not overly sweet. The pork belly wasn't too salty and the skin was crunchy.

These big balls were deep fried Hiroshima oysters. Spiced with something that tasted like togarshi shichimi so it gave it a bit of kick. The coating looked thick but surprisingly it wasn't. It also didn't feel too oily and the oyster was very fresh.

The garoupa with broccoli was well done. The fish was fresh and didn't fall apart. Held firm yet was slick. Appreciated that the broccoli wasn't overcooked.

Like any traditional Chinese restaurant, it ends with a complimentary fruit platter. The fruit was refreshingly cold.

We also had complimentary dessert. There were three choices that day. Boyfriend chose the red bean soup. Usually not a favorite of mine when it comes to freebie desserts as they are usually just watered down from a blender, but this place actually cooked the beans down to a soft mush. There were lotus seeds as well.

The mango pudding was my choice. There were chunks of mango in it and the pudding had a strong mango taste.

A good place for traditional style Chinese food. The place isn't cramped. The food was well created for a reasonableprice. Portions are good and food comes out fast. Might come back again and try out dim sum.

今日同屋企人去飲早茶,呢間茶樓係新開所以佢地話想試下🤓茶樓環境都幾大,裝修得幾靚幾新淨,光線幾足夠,坐得都唔逼~好過上一間酒樓好多!!點心款式都好多,平時見到嘅點心呢度都可以食得到。叫咗幾款平時都會食既點心~ 咖哩蒸土魷,醬皇蒸鳳爪,蒜香牛栢葉,蘿蔔千絲酥,春蛋燒賣,上湯水餃,蝦餃皇...🤤點心味道夠傳統,份量都好夠,用料都好新鮮!自己最鐘意呢度既蝦餃,蝦夠大隻,爽口彈牙😍 以後又多個飲茶既地方嚕~

對新蒲崗既人黎講,富臨轉咗手係一個喜訊,因為富臨既茶同點心都真係好一般😢新開咗一間新光梗係第一時間係咩品質🌝點咗幾樣點心,味道都唔錯,選擇都夠哂多~ 咖哩蒸土魷,咖哩味夠哂濃,魷魚都好爽口彈牙👍🏻 醬皇蒸鳳爪,鳳爪蒸到夠哂入味,時間掌握得啱啱好~ 唔會太硬或者太軟蒜香牛栢葉,個湯食落都幾濃,牛栢葉都吸引到湯既精華。蘿蔔千絲酥,外面一層層炸得好靚好脆,入面蘿蔔都夠冧,切細啲應該會仲好味。春蛋燒賣,燒賣食落都夠新鮮~上湯水餃,我自己幾鐘意呢個水餃,個湯清得黎又唔會冇味。餡料好鮮仲有蝦既甜味。蝦餃皇,皮薄餡靚,隻蝦係好大隻!

富臨終於搬走咗,新光終於搬咗黎嗱,今晚去咗試,嘩佢個電腦系統亂到爆,入3個餸可以孌5個,跟住有入單嘅就遲遲都唔黎,無嘅咪出聲囉,我叫過第2樣,加單嘅都黎咗,只係一個上湯浸青菜姐都可以遲遲唔上菜,問D侍應十問9唔知,個個著哂黑色Suit好似係主任經理甘,攪到都唔知邊個係大邊個係細我地叫咗4個餸1.個係A+B$168 -清蒸聖子皇(A)+漁香茄子煲2.上湯魚腐浸莧菜3.一個係紅酒汁炆牛尾D菜單望落去就好似比同區酒樓貴10-20蚊左右,不過佢茶芥就平D,其實都差唔多講番D野食先,$168個Set清蒸聖子皇: D聖子皇硬過條橡根,咬極都咬唔開,明顯overcook啦,至於個漁香茄子煲個味都OK,唔係求其穩包醬倒入去,不過就未見D鹹魚嘅蹤影上湯魚腐浸莧菜: 個湯都唔似係求其開師父水,唔算大味精,不過d魚腐就有一大陣油溢味,明顯無出過水3.一個係紅酒汁炆牛尾: 個汁都算濃,不過偏甜,d牛尾都算多,都幾淋嘢食ok,不過就係有d亂
