As an ex-pat from the US, it's often nice to enjoy the guilty pleasure of a doughnut on the weekend. In my search, I have tried the one at Wellcome (heavy like lead with flavored hard chocolate covering) and a place inside the Aeon shopping center in Causeway Bay (also dense). Nothing comes even close.
So, as I searched the internet, someone recommended King's Bakery. This morning, I called to see what time they opened. The person who answered told me they were open since 6am. Wow! Who does that in Hong Kong! So, by 930 I was at the store and all the doughnuts were gone. I think she said there would be more at 1 o'clock.
Sad that I had missed out, I grabbed a few other treats such as a pineapple bun, a couple of mini BBQ pork buns, a red bean bun and a roll. The store has a very nice assortment of rolls and loaves of bread. Will have to come back to try more items.
As I left the store to walk up the street, I started eating the pork bun. Very nice, not filled with fat or onions. While inside Pacific Coffee, I ate the pineapple bun. The top was crunchy and inside quite light. If it was war, it might even be close to the buns from Sai Kung Bakery. If they could sell their beverages at a cold temperature, I might have grabbed a water. It's so hard to get something really cold to drink around here.
This is a nice bakery with lots of variety. I saw many ex-pats stopping in with their kids to grab a snack to start the day.
