Ootoya
2011-10-30
my friend chose this restaurant for us, i wanted to go somewhere, child friendly and where we won't be rushed for foodwe was given a table in a room as you walked in on you right hand sidea baby chair was given no problemorder was taken quicklyas i've been to japan, i was very impressed with the menu choice, very traditional noodles and pork chop sethowever i wasn't having high expectationsfood came out shortly, my friend ordered the fried chicken, i ordered a pork chop rice set, cold soba noodles and a few extraswell well well, was the food good? no.... its was BRILLIANT!!!my god, the last time i had food like that was in japanthe cold soba noodles... it had a bite to the texture, not sloppy as i expected....the pork chop rice set, very very traditional, where you grind your own sesame, add the sauce, etc... one feedback here...i found the sauce too strong (but in all the entire meal was brilliant)the pork chop, was juicy...but as we did a catch up with my friend, as the pork chop went cold, it went dry...but still the flavour was theremy friends taro rice was very nice as wellin fact the whole meal was very nicewe had the pork saladthis meal so much reminded me of japanbecause we was in a room, the staff didn't come in, ... i wanted to shout the staff, so in japanese i shouted excuse me... STRAIGHT AWAY i got three replies of *hai*my god, was they attentive or what!! extra points!!!well done ootoya....ok, upon writing this review i did a google search and found out this restaurant is actually owned by a japanese company.... but still, a great find in hong kong…Read More

is it still up to standard?
Luca
2011-10-30
on this current trip to hong kongalot of my favourite restaurant has disappointed me big timeluca is one of my favourite restaurantsand i always make a effort to go here with friendsfingers crossed, the food is still up to standardwe booked a table for 6 on a thursday at 7pmit was a lovely evening, not too hot and a little breezealong with the food we opened about 5 bottles of wine, from chianti, shiraz and something else, i have to admit, i thought the first choice was good which was recommended by the manager sam... chianti.then we tried the shiraz, im not too keen on shiraz as it always had a bitter after taste, but besides being full bodied this one that was brought out to us was also smooth and very easy to drinkwe ordered a selection of startersnachos.... very nice, and cheesy, if you dont like cheese, then i wouldn't recommend thisgrilled squid... this is a definately must order, if they have it in season... squid, chargrilled to perfection, as i cook alot i know you need skills to cook it so its tender and just cooked, sqeeze of lemon ...flavour is awesome .... p.s the tenticles are the best part!!!creamed mushrooms...this is my favourite, i always order this when i go to luca, and it certainly hasn't disappointed mejalapeno quesadilla, these was very nice, little kick, soft, and light highly recommend againmain courseceasar salad... if you crave a salad, then this is what you need, well dressed leaves and generous on tha parmasan cheesebaby ribs, great flavour, not too soft and not too chewy just the right texture, you also get gloves to eat them with if you dont like to get your hands dirty, highly recommendox tail pasta.... the day before i had the best ox tail, so nothing was going to compare to that taste... ok, well luca's ox tail was cooked very nicely, however i couldn't help but compare the ox tail to the one i had the night before in macauparma ham pizza... i seriously think they've improved their pizza base, if was more thinner and softer, the flavour was there...highly recommendpork knuckle...the star of the restaurant...highly recommend, its served off the bone with mash, red cabbage and a sauce... i have feedback regarding this meal... more mash PLEASE!!! the skin reminds me of suckling pig, its certainly not a meal for those who's watchign their figure or diets...however if your one who loves food, then i definately recommend thisthe evening itsaelf was very relaxed, we wasn't pushed to return our table, and we sat for 5 hours!! enjoying the food and drinking, and towards the end of the night we even got chatting to the staff more, and the head chef Alfred, who was on the hong kong programme came out and had his photo taken with us, we gave him a few feedbacks, which he took inthis meal was definately the highlight of my hogn kong trip this yearfood bill for 6 $1500…Read More

disappointed for a michelin restaurant
Loaf On
2011-10-29
ok, this restaurant is based on the fact this is a michelin restaurant...so i expect high quality foodok, me and my family, just landed in hong kong on the wednesday, and my cousin suggested a family reunionshe wanted to try this restaurant, so we agreedshe bought some seafood to take there to tell them to cookabalone, crab, razor clam, prawnswe also brought our own alcoholapparently your not suppose to, but as we knew the kitchen staff it was fineok...the food, the seafood we bought, was really nice...not because it was cooked nice, but purely because of its freshnesswe ordered their speciality... salt and pepper tofu, it was crispy, so but absolutely no flavour at allthe food standard was very very average, how it got its michelin star is beyond mei dont know how much the bill was as my cousin paid for it, there was about 10 of us in total, and was fully booked the restaurant…Read More

Honeymoon Dessert
2010-03-16
this brance is very busy... so busy it feels like the staff are watching you eat...ready to kick you out so the seats are available for the next customers!!i ordered black pearl, mixed fruit with coconut milk...my favourite, very healthy full of flavour and cleanse your palat after a meal out somewherethe durian pancakes are yummy as well, the cream in the pancake isn't heavy at all and is very lightthe tofu you get are very smooth and light as wellwe also had this vanilla ice cream with durian, this is nice as wellin fact you can't go wrong with what you order at honeymoon...just that the service feels like your pushed to rush...rather than relax and enjoy...think i'd enjoy the dessert more if i got a take away and ate it at home…Read More

Wo Kee Restaurant
2010-03-16
came here twice as my cousin recommended it... its nothing tremendoustypical hong kong char chan teng type foodfirst time i came here, my cousin got a bacon egg breakfast, lots of bacon egg sunny side up.. but nothing speciali got the sweet and sour ribs which was served with rice, ok la, evenly coated, sauce wasn't too sweet or sour, just the right balance, ribs wasn't meaty but acceptable for the price you paysecond time i came here, i got the thick toast with peanut butter and condensed milk... below average... had better from friarwood!!!!! yep you heard right!!!toast wasn't think enough and cos it was slightly on the thinner side they toasted it too much, and they peanut butter and condensed milk was of very small portion.. could do with being more generous!!!…Read More

Chuen Kee Seafood Restaurant
2010-03-15
i ate here quite alot on my recent trip to hong kong, as i stayed with relatives in sai kung.dim sum, we chose to dine upstairs as there was always more than 10 of us, the waitress are very friendly...probably cos my uncle and dad virtually lives in there?the chueng fan's has to be one of the highlights of the entire dim sum menu...as they're so light and full of flavour, siu mai's are very big, tasty and the meat are roughly chopped so you get a bit on them... har gau, ok la...they stuck to the paper when you tried to pick them up, beef ho fun...yummy!!!! chicken feet/ sparerib claypot / steamed bamboo mega portion... so nice!! and full of flavour...i couln't get enough of it... the one in the bamboo steamer wrapped in leaf was one of the best i hadthen i wanted custard bun...but my uncle told me to get this other one...its similar, got ducks egg in it...and the filling is running and mega hot and please bite carefully!! these was sooooooooooo nice!!!other dim sum that was standard... steamed beef balls, fishballs, spring rolls, seafood spring rolls, ham shui kok (these was actually good!!!)ok... night time menu.... i didn't think it was worth the money!!! 20 of us and it was $6000 it was a sunday and busy and service wasn't too good!!!we had pak churk prawns, slightly small but very tasty, cheese lobster yee mein...ok la, wasn't keen on the cheese sauce, steamed scallops with fan C, tasted good however,,, the fan c wasn't cut up so some of us ended up without!!!, abalone... WHAT A WASTE!!!! it was cooked with a few veg in like a soup.... very very disappointedfillet steak cantonese sauce... not good enough...they marinaded the beef so soft it didn't have that steak chew to itin all, very good for dim sum, but evening meal...give it a miss…Read More

The Greenery
2010-03-15
came here for the LUNCH buffet on a saturday with the openrice voucher...price =$235as i came on a night time, i thought to myself there definately won't be as much choice of food...and most of all i certainly didn't expectt he american beef!!!ok here it goes....seafood, crab, prawns and whelks... great choice lots of selections and refills, however the prawns was still frozen in the middle!!! had to report it to the manager!!!this time the salad selection was big!! congratulations for that i loved it!!! there was a station where someone makes up a salad for you...or there was about 8 different choices of salad to pick from from greek seafood calamari salad to thai beef salad and some noodle salads!!on a nighttime where there was a seafood hotpot...its been replaced by a pasta station... i didn't give this a try as i was so spoilt for choice of food..there was the typical tomato base and cream sauce base for pastamy favourite...hainnan chicken rice...although i didn't opt for the chicken i asked for the rice.... what did i have it with... the american beef!!! my oh my what a combination!! its a must try!!! just the juice of the beef into the rice of the hainan chicken!!! thumbs up!!!!sushi... now this didn't suprise me at all... on a night time...its luxery sushi thats made to order...you queue... well on the daytime buffet...its the basics of maki's, california rolls, salmon sushi and salmon, octopus, yellow yail tuna sashimi... basically the cheap stuff!!! but how many eat this kind of sushi when you go to a really nice buffet? well i certainly dont!!!erm... hot food.... oh there wasn't any lamb chops on the daytim...this didn't bother me as i dont eat lamb, however i remember my friends sayin thelamb chops was one of the best things of the nightitme menu...i can't remember what food there was...let me think... yueng chow fried rice...standard...fillet of sole, pork curry (yummy), vegetables of brocolli cauliflour..etc (yummy) i need veg with all the meat on offer!!! roast potatos, spicy pork chops, battered seafood with tartar sauce (yummy)there was dim sum on offer...didn't tryalso french onion soup with cheese croutons and a japanese skewer station which i didn't try as welldesert again... not much choice in my honest opinion...however it didn't bother me as i'm not a dessert personfor the price we paid, we sat from 12-3pm and ate loads!!!one of the highlight has to be the waitress called CIRCLE, oh my god she had the most beautiful smile and service!!!extra points!!!def recommend coming here for the lunch buffetp.s saturday open rice cvoucher is 25% not 35%…Read More

second visit review
Four Seasons Pot Rice
2010-02-11
brought my friend here for a cheap meal out, after accidently walking into a expensive restaurant in mongkok...go here around 8pm and queued for about 15 minutes...which is very quick considering there was about 16 people in front of us...as we queued we looked at the menu and decided to order a salted fish chciken claypot, a spare rib with preserved sausage claypot and a small oyster cakeyou have to buy your own drinks and bring it inalthough its tight to sit down, the atmosphere is good, and they are reasonably clean for my standards!!!as a BBC (british born chinese) i would never dream of eating in these places, but after my local hong kong friend brought me here for the first time a few years back i cann;'t stop thining about this placethe oyster cake came out first on greaseproof paper served with chilli bean sauce... the chilli bean sauce tasted very salty and did not compliment the oyster cake at all!!!the oyster cake was crisp, light and tasty.. i ended up eating it with out the chilli saucethe two rice pots folllowed after a while, the chicken and salted fish was good... the salty fish wasn't salty in a way where you need to drink loads of waterand the spare rib and sausage was so nice ... the price you pay, you actually get alot of meat/ filling and the rice wasn't burnt at alli love this place and it will certainly fill you up on a low budget!!!…Read More

disappointed about the hype
Thai Kwok Snack
2010-02-11
me and three friends came here to eat after someone recommeneded it to me...with all the newspaper cuttings and people saying it s very traditional, i was disappointed with the lack of choice!!!we ordered a mixed starter which is just not acceptable!!!i though thai fish cakes is something that should taste of fish... but this had beans in and it tasted floury... along with the spring rolls and these prawn things....the hainan chicken rice was good... however it was served with cold chicken and it made the rice cold quickly....thai chicken feet was good, great huge size, very spicy and great sauce that was served with itpad thai was extremely good!!! very morish and certainly felt there wasn't enough for the four of us who wentpineapple rice, although small portion, not much meat in itand we ordered a crab curry... but they didn't write it down and when we chased it up they said there wasn't any crab left, they recommended a prawn curry which had two prawn in that was halved... although it tasted nice, it was slightly on the sweet side for me...overall i've had better thai food and was disappointed at the hype about this place being so traditional…Read More

oh my god!!if you love seafood this is the place!!the only seafood there isn't is oysters and lobsterthere's a hot broth station with selection of clams, musscles, scallops, razor clams and vegthen sushi stand but its not just your average salmon sushi... but speciality's...one thing i found disappointing was the lack of salad!!! it was non existant:(there was scampi, salmon, whelks, musscles, alaska crab legs snow crab.... rack of lamb, seafood fried rice, thai lemon grass pork chop... roast stand, skewer stand, unlimited top quality usa marbled beef... unlike la scala, this is cooked and first come first served... once its gone your out of luck!!the pork chop by this stand was excellent...my highlight was the hainan chicken rice... although chicken wasn't good the rice was unbelivable!!! i went back just for the rice!!!although the dessert selection wasn't huge, it didn't bother me as a) i'm not a dessert person and b) i was so full from the seafood!!!the selection is huge and i used the 25% off with open ricewhich averaged to $370very very good!!i really do recommend coming here and advise booking…Read More

Oyster Bar & Grill
2010-02-11
i came here with 54 girlsafter seeing the foie gras set menu advertise in a magazinethe original foie gras set menu is $228but it was on promotion for $188the week before we went i bought the same magazine...and it had a further 20% off and another voucher for 6 oysters bottle of white for $100ok when we got there, the theme was all so romantic... probably cos they're preparing for valentines day?there was a guy playing guitare and singing for all the diners....as we got there before 8pm, cocktails was happy hour...we decided to order two drinks each, we also asked if we could use both vouchers and the waiter said yes!!excellent!!!the oysters was very fresh and was served with lemon and tabasco sauce....the foie gras set menu's catch is... every person has to order it... which we didn't mind as thats what we went there for!!!first course... parma ham toast and salmon toast... the salmon toast was good, salad was VERY bland:( and the parma ham toast... well it'd make common sense to have butter on it as the toast was bone drylobster soup... very very disappointing!!! it tasted like a pink mushroom soup!!!main course, fillet steak with foie gras veg and pasta... the pasta was cold!!!! the veg was al dente:), the steak was perfect i had mine 50% as for the foie gras OH MY GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! this was definately the highlight!!!! it was like butter...melt in your mouth and it was of a decent size as well considering how much the set menu was!!!then the dessert... chocolate volcano... we call it a fondant here in uk!!!i don't do desserts... and after what we had to eat i wasn't that bothered... however when it came out... my god i was botheredit was goooooooodddddddddddddddddddddso good we was so tempted to order a second round!!!with the voucher, oysters, 2 cocktails, tea or coffee and a bottle of white bill was $270it's worth going for the foie gras and the dessert, the starter and soup was crap!!!however i forgive you and i would go back again!!!…Read More
