I was looking for something to eat at HK airport Terminal 1 near the gate 40 reaturant area.   I noticed Chen Fu Ji had Rendang currry on the menu.  It was expensive,  HKD135,  but I love Rendang and its not easy to find in my country so I thought I would try it.It was a big mistake.  I started to have doubts when I sat at the table and noticed a cheap plasticky red tablecloth with some holes in it.   Next I placed the order with the waiter but had to repeat the order 3 times before he correctly

I was looking for something to eat at HK airport Terminal 1 near the gate 40 reaturant area.   I noticed Chen Fu Ji had Rendang currry on the menu.  It was expensive,  HKD135,  but I love Rendang and its not easy to find in my country so I thought I would try it.

It was a big mistake.  I started to have doubts when I sat at the table and noticed a cheap plasticky red tablecloth with some holes in it.   Next I placed the order with the waiter but had to repeat the order 3 times before he correctly took my order.  I ordered a side dish of rice and because of the high cost of the curry I asked for water to drink.

I was not expecting to be charged for the water and was disappointed to see an expensive bottle of evian put on the table along with a dirtly plastic glass.  I could see yellowish patches on the plastic glass and decided to drink directly from the bottle.   Finally the curry came.  It was garnished with an orchid and looked OK.  A mound of brown meat in a dark brown curry sauce with a few bits of lettuce.  I waited for the rice. And waited and waited.  After 10 minutes I asked a waiter for my rice and it arrived.  I can forgive such incompetence if the reasurant is busy but there were more waiters than patrons.

Finally I could try the curry and was deeply disappointed.  The sauce was OK,  it had a passable rendang flavour but the meat was inedible.  For HKD135 I was expecting prime quality cuts of beef but the curry meat was actually geletanous mounds of offal with fat, grisle, veins and chunks of indedible off cuts.  It was disgusting and inedible.  I ate the rice with bits of sauce.  The rice was hard and dry and was also unpleasant.  They also charged me extra for the rice.

Overall the meal was extremely disappointing.  I felt cheated and will never go there again.  I am saddened to think there are enough one time customers passing through HK airport to keep a place like this viable .  As a pubilic service I registered this accound on OpenRice so I could at least warn other travellers to avoid this trap.
