Boyfriend and I arrived in Tsuen Wan and I was SUPER hungry. So we just randomly ate at the nearest place and that was Hong Kong Day. A cha chan teng concept from Maxim's.
During afternoon tea time, they have various afternoon tea sets. Menu is in English and Chinese. There is no 10% service charge. You order at the table and pay on your way out. But one has a set where you can choose three items (a snack, main and dessert or drink) and it only costs $48. There are lots to select from and we decided to order from that.
This is what boyfriend ordered. The snack was a seaweed soup with three different types of fish balls. The balls were ok. Nothing special about them. The soup was savory but had a hint of MSG.
The main was a stir fried beef rice noodle. This was pretty delicious and a good generous portion. It wasn't overly oily and the beef was tender without the taste of meat softner.
The dessert he chose was a coffee cake. This was actually a multi-layer coffee jelly and REALLY good. The taste of coffee was strong and rich. The jelly had a nice bounce.
I chose the fried chicken wing and fries as a snack. I say wing because it may look like two wings from the photo, it's actually one wing but they separated into two. The wings were good. Super crunchy and tasted like the McDonald's fried wings but 10 times more spicy. The fries were good, too.
My main was a spaghetti bolognese with a fried egg. Here is an example when Maxim offers something abhorrent. The bolognese sauce was really good. But the fried egg? Was still a bit on the raw side. The egg white was still clear. And the pasta? It wasn't drained properly and was still watery underneath.
My dessert was jelly. And it was exactly that. A big cup of lime jelly with canned pineapple. I'm a happy camper over this as I love Jello. It fit what I wanted. I won't complain.
Maxim's. Always unpredictable. Sometimes good. Sometimes bad. But at least not expensive.
