Yum Cha serves as not just dim sum but various Chinese dishes. All are either modern or cute. As boyfriend and I were meeting up with some friends who brought along their baby, we decided to have lunch there. I mean ... hey. The dim sum was cute. With three locations in Hong Kong, we chose Tsim Sha Tsui as it was more convenient and I booked a table for 5 people plus one child.Menu is in English and Chinese and is in the form of a check off piece of paper. They do have a tea charge of $16 per person.Appetizer Platter ($119).  From left to right: scallion ginger chicken, sesame chicken rice noodles salad and orange wintermelon. You can choose three appetizers for the price of $119. So this is what we chose. the sesame chicken rice noodles was perhaps the least impressive. I've had better in a lot of other places. the noodles were a  bit thick. the taste of sesame didn't stand out. The scallion ginger chicken had a lot of ginger but it was interesting they made the chicken into a roulade. Perhaps the only impressive appetizer we chose was the orange wintermelon. The wintermelon had soaked up all the taste of orange, creating a cool and refreshing taste. I liked it a lot.Baked Pineapple Puffs ($59). Honestly, we ordered these because it was in birdcage. I mean, come on! It's a birdcage! These are basically Taiwanese pineapple cakes (鳳梨酥 or feng li su) but shaped like little birds. The pastries were ok but I'm not a big fan of these dry pastries.Green Bean with Salted Egg Yolk ($99). This was the best item we ordered. The beans were crunchy and topped with a salted egg yolk coating. Absolutely delicious and fragrant.Crab Roe and Pork Dumplings ($59). These were good. The pork was firm and savory. Liked the addition of crab roe.Shrimp and Veg Dumplings ($59). These were pretty to look at as they had colored the wrapping. The wrapping was not too thick. The filling had a nice portion of shrimp to pork.Hot Custard Molten Buns ($49). These were adorable and actually very good. The buns were fluffy and soft. The custard ran out like molten lava. Just delicious.Green Tea Molten Custard Buns ($49). The green tea ones were good, too but we preferred the custard ones instead. The green tea custard flowed out wondefully and it did have a strong matcha taste.BBQ Piggy Buns ($49). Cute as ever! The buns were fluffy and soft but sadly the char siu inside was a bit dry and there wasn't much of it as well.Chili Pork Dumplings ($59). Very spicy so I didn't have any. But from the looks from my friends, they felt they've had better elsewhere.Seared  Chinese Pancakes ($39). These were terrible. Dry and tough. Not flakey enough as well.Food was ok and definitely cute to look at. Some were presented in a cute way. It fit the purpose of having cute dim sum. However, the service was atrocious. Here's why.Upon arriving, the hostess informed us they were getting the table ready. The hallway to the elevators seemed to have no air conditioning and so we asked if could move the child inside while we waited for our table to be ready. We were abruptly told by the hostess that it was fine but to not block the doorway which we complied. But as we saw our table was already ready, we still weren't told to sit down. So, we asked and was told that it was still being cleaned. But the table was set and we waited a further 15 minutes before we were finally told to that our table was ready. The hostess pointed to the table but when we got there, we saw there were two tables and were a bit confused which one she pointed to. Looking back for direction, it seemed we were left to fend for ourselves, so we just sat down. Sitting there for another 10 minutes, we were not given a menu. We were not even given tea. We noticed a menu behind us, so we took it and started to decide what to order. When the hostess (same one as before) told us rather rudely that this was not the menu and asked why we didn't use the lunch menu. Um...because we weren't given one which we told her. She then placed the correct menu and we re-ordered everything again. When tea arrived, we were not given any cups. How is one to drink tea without cups? Waiters didn't even notice this was missing until we pointed it out. Trying to get a waiter's attention was next to impossible as we couldn't get our tea refilled. It got to a point that one of us just got up and refilled it ourselves. The food may be cute the staff needs a lot of work. Were they understaffed that day?  I have no idea. But for that, I really would think twice before deciding to return again. continue reading

continue reading

continue reading
