We started with a 20g plate of Jamon from Jabugo. Interestingly there is an arbitrage in the pricing. It's actually cheaper to order two 10g portions than to order a 20g plate. Anyway the jamon was only OK, as they were down to the last bits of the leg and it wasn't as juicy as it could have been. We followed with sardines a la plancha, which were actually much bigger than I expected! Nicely pan-fried with a roast pepper sauce to go along. I tried to take in as much of the fish head as possible.

We followed with sardines a la plancha, which were actually much bigger than I expected! Nicely pan-fried with a roast pepper sauce to go along. I tried to take in as much of the fish head as possible...

The pulpo a a gallega was very nice. I'm usually not a big fan of octopus but the pieces were soft and tender, with just a bit of chewiness. Could do without the capers but that's a personal preference. I used the bread to soak up the paprika-flavored olive oil. Yum...

I had read about the crispy pork belly with quince alioli on the internet, and wasn't gonna pass it up for sure! It was nicely roasted - no doubt a lot of the fat has already dripped away during the process. The crackling was a bit tough the way I like it - similar to Cantonese roast pork (燒肉) - but not unmanageable.

I must say that I thought the duck breast and Pedro Ximenez to be a bit ho-hum. It's not exactly a "traditional" tapas item and it was a bit overcooked for my taste, but I'm very French when it comes to poultry - I like 'em pink.

We still have some room, so we order up some lomo de Córdoba. I've always loved lomo, as the slight spiciness of it makes my mouth water. It's cheaper than jamon, but easier to chew on than chorizo. Yum...

For some reason churros and hot chocolate has shown up on the menu as a dessert. This is a breakfast item and one that I enjoyed immensely on my trip to Spain. But I guess I'm not likely to have it at breakfast here in Hong Kong, so I should be happy and just take it. Actually it's not enough to dip the churro into the hot chocolate...it' better to scoop the chocolate out with a spoon and drizzle it all over... My friend was watching his diet so I ened up having most of it. Heh heh heh...

We also had the crema Catalana and the raisin and Sherry flan, as a couple of other friends stopped in to say hello at the end. Both were pretty decent.

I think it was a pretty good meal overall. It's a very casual atmostphere, sitting on bar stools and hanging your jackets on the wall hooks behind you. The open kitchen means you get to smell everything as they're being cooked - which can be a little distracting - but also fun. Piero the manager (he's Italian) was pretty friendly so that also helped to improve my dining experience. Let's see how well they do.

先來湯,是蕃茄凍湯。小小的一杯,賣相精緻。吃起來冰冰涼涼的,切了碎粒的蕃茄很鮮美,加上橄欖油、香草及不少的蒜頭,用匙羹喝起來,又鮮甜又有香味,是一個很不錯的開胃菜;

For example, the bread with the salsa on top that we had, merely had a smidgeon of salsa on top. Friend commented that its worst than his own ones. Seriously, if they can't get the bread right in a Spanish tapas bar and charged a high price (around $27-28 from memory), then they might as well give it out for free. Even plain bread with Olive oil here costs $18.

Also had the Spanish Iberico Jabugo Ham (cured for 36 months). This is quite nice compared to other ones you can get from high end supermarkets - with a bit of marbling and not too waxy texture. Went well with the sherry. Other dishes we tried include the Blood Sausages. This came with a fried duck egg. We liked the taste of this dish but ultimately it was too chopped up into little pieces, plus there really wasn't that much of it to taste the dish. The duck egg might have been better if cooked in another fashion.

Had an octopus dish that had a pleasant flavour and a soft yet crunchy texture - really lovely. Slow cooked pork were pretty tiny pieces (2) and was nearly melt in your mouth although the flavour wasn't too special, the crackling skin on top was slightly too hard to chew instead of crunchy, but getting there.

Don't recommend the Red Mullet though, it was pretty much flavourless and came with some type of white beans (canolli?) that would have been better if it was cooked with a bit more stock, but as it is the whole package didn't work too well. I think the wine list is aggressive, with some nice sherries to been an aperitif or to go with some of the charcuterie cold cuts, but not enough brands. The red wine section needed more varieties than Tempranillos in my opinion even though it best suited the food.

All in all, food wasn't too bad but it wasn't very Spanish in execution and taste, nor design, even though the menu and its descriptions say otherwise. Felt like eating some kind of modern British or Australian food with Spanish influence instead. The prawns, the fish or the tortillas for example were not readily going to announce 'I'm Spanish'.

Great idea - but, needs some more refinement, particular with the cooking methods and also the too simple menu. Its needs more attention to the small details. One could even see some simple spelling mistakes on the menu - for example, BRAISED was spelt something else like BRASIED or similar. Perhaps this carelessness reflected the quality of their approach to food slightly, even if a Tapas bar should be a relaxed environment. Although it probably suits the Hong Kong market as it is now, otherwise it will be too ahead of its time in this 'too easily satisfied' place.

We started with the marinated white anchovies and a Russian stylie potato salad (yes at a tapas bar!). Both were the right portions to share and had great flavors. The white anchovies were buttery and the creaminess was offset nicely against the lemon juice and oil.

We also had a tortilla with paprika and aioli which was crispy on the outside and soft and luscious on the inside. The potatoes were chunky as well which gave it nice texture. We tried the 24 month old jamon which had wonderful flavour, a great balance of saltiness and fatty/waxiness in the ham. The chef also gave us a couple of pieces of the 36 month old jamon to try for free, which was even nicer, lovely melt in then mouth textures and a smoother flavour. Will definitely be having a plate of this next time.

We also ordered the grilled octopus - more tender octopus, I've never had. The paprika gave it a hint of warmth and the capers were a nice touch but was almost flavour overload (hey but who's complaining?!).

Finished with a cream catalan, nice without being amazing but not a bad word to say about it. All in all, a most satisfying meal. Probably not the cheapest place around but you can't fault the quality of the food or the service.

Highly recommended. We will be back for sure.

This is my second visit to Tapeo and I must say I love the food and atmosphere there. Great place to go with your date or girlfriends. The restaurant manager took care of the selection for us and he did an amazing job. Although I must say pretty much everything on the menu is excellent. They don't take reservations so better go early. Nonetheless, you can enjoy a glass of wine while waiting for your seats. I'm definitely going back again!

Everything was yummy, from the tuna tartar, chorizo, lamb, roast chicken with romesco sauce, classic tortilla (spanish omelette), pepper salad, roast whole peppers, clams in white wine sauce, and some other dishes we ordered but forgotten.... needless to say, we were stuffed.

Waiters friendly and informative, giving good advice on what to order and try. Watching them make the omelettes, grilling baking sizzling frying slicing.... was a treat in itself.

It's basically a bar with high chairs... so if you want to go in a big crowd and chat it gets a little hard unless you all stand around which is what we ended up doing. Also, no reservations, so be prepared to wait a bit during peak hours.

And if you take the receipt and visit either their sister restaurants, Soda or Frites, you get 10% off (and vice versa, so grab a drink at Soda and come over to enjoy the scrumptious food).

Reasonably priced considering it fed 4 hungry mouths.

Tapeo is so different from all the tapa restaurants in Hong Kong. It truly tried to be a real tapas bar you would find in Spain and it's pretty successful in doing so. The wine list is all Spanish and you will be able to find different wines that you don't normally see on restaurant menus.

We started with the 36 months jamon, the lomo and the salami, which were all delicious! I think the salami can be sliced a little thicker for texture. We then went on to white anchovies, grilled pulpo and clams with ham. The clams were really plump and juicy with the ham giving it great flavors. The pulpo had great texture but I think a little more acid would have elevated it. I don't love anchovies but my husband really enjoyed them. Then we went on to have the grilled chorizo, the pork belly special and the pork chop. The pork chop came in a huge portion and it's definitely money for value given the price. However, I found the pork to be a little tough and flavorless. This was my least favorite dish for the night. The chorizo on the other hand was great.! It was really flavorful and juicy.

We didn't have any desserts but will definitely go back to try!

Even though the restaurant got really busy towards the end, the service was still great! The waiter made sure our wine was at the right temperature and checked on us numerous time. The manager was really nice and managed to check on every table to see how they were doing. In the end, he sent us 2 glasses of sherry because we didn't order dessert and he wanted us to end the meal with something sweet!

Tapeo is a place that I will recommend to all of our friends and a place worth going back to!

When a friend replied curiosity on my quest to try out Tapeo, the new Tapas Bar that took over where Mink used to be, I knew that things would be rather different, with plenty of explaining to do about the cuisine itself, the dishes and the philosophy within it all. Turned out, none of that were needed. Tapeo has it all taken care of. Tapeo accepts no reservations, and there are no tables either. The clientele is required on a first come first serve basis, and of course the early bird gets the better view. We entered the cool establishment dimly lit with red and silver wall decor. We chose our seats right in the middle of the long counter that extended to the back of the restaurant. You will watch your food being prepared. If you order jamon (ham), you will see every piece being shaved for you and to your liking. Restaurant manager Viviano Romito made no mistake with a warm welcome and a firm reassuring handshake that your meal will be taken care of, if not pampered throughout.

The menu is your placemat, mostly in Spanish and a little English. I suggest a little homework in advance will be nice, but the waiting staff made no haste in explaining everything you have in mind...all the questions, all the stories about the food you are about to order. Suggestions were made, and we promptly ordered ham croquetas and tomatoes on toasts to start, followed by "octopus" and "clams", then "lamb chops with salsa verde (green sauce)", finishing off with "crema catalana (Spanish creme brulee)" and "churro (fried donut) with chocolate)

Ham Croquetas are golden globes fried crispy on the outside and surprisingly pillowy soft on the inside, with flakes of ham throughout, I wondered if I was biting into fried cream cheese. The waiter dismissed the notion of cheese, replaced by "bechamel (white sauce)" and a graphic story of how white sauce was made in the first place. Ham is mixed into white sauce and chilled, scooped, breaded and fried until crispy. Tomatoes on Toasts is the Spanish version of the Italian Bruschetta. Fresh bread is toasted, rubbed with garlic and topped with a strained and seasoned chopped tomato mixture. The texture of soft tomato and crispiness of the toast contradict each other, as the sharp garlic and mellow olive oil rounded out the palate for the next bite. It's simplicity on its own.

"Octopus" is a dish as you call it, bite sized octopus is tossed lightly with lemon and olive oil and a generous sprinkling of parsley. The common toughness in octopus is nonexistent. "Clams" are cooked in sherry with a little ham and plenty of olive oil. Sherry Wine takes on a special taste on the clams as you can taste the fresh sweetness from each clam. Lamb Chops are sauteed on a hot pan, medium on the inside topped by a generous spoonful of salsa verde, literally means green sauce, which was made with fresh parsley, capers, anchovies and olive oil. The lamb chops are succulent and sauce is green and fresh. It certainly is an alternative take of lamb with mint.

When it comes to desserts, Tapeo has plenty to offer. We disregarded the homemade vanilla icecream or the tempting Santiago Tart (which is a traditional almond tart) and opted for Crema Catalana, which was a Spanish version of Creme Brulee, and "Churros". Technically "churros" are elongated fried donuts served with a thick hot chocolate for Spaniards' breakfasts. "Crema Catalana" has a crusty burnt sugar coating on top. Having cracked the crust, the custard below is moussy with ana slight chill, with notes of cinnamon and lemon zest throughout. "Churros" are crispy on the outside with a light sugar coating. The chocolate component is replaced by a glass of chocolate mousse richly accompanied with whipped cream and a sprinkling of cocoa. The hot-and-cold, crunchy-and-soft contradictions rounded off a fancy trip to the exploration of the Tapas world.

We intentionally didn't order the jamon (ham) or the famous prawn dish (for next visit). The Spanish Tortilla and Roasted Peppers are also specialties here. Notice that water comes from a bottle and if you intend to drink, they have a good wine list as well. Watching your food being prepared right in front of you may not be something new (as you may have experienced it in Teppanyaki), but the joy of discovering a new type of eating is truly amazing, and Tapeo's service is dedicated enough to be your tour guide along the way.
