The Location: Gough Street is a tiny street at the start of Sheung Wan, just off steep Aberdeen Street. Gough Street accommodates a bunch of Asian restaurants i.e. 2 Japanese, 2 Chinese noodle places, as well as a French coffee house, and many interesting shops with things to i.e. pimp up your home as well as fashion stores. Towards the end of Gough Street on the right side of the street, you can find a small restaurant with traditional Shanghainese food.

The Place: Shanghai Lane is a chain restaurant offering authentic food à la Shanghai. The restaurant can be accessed from the main street and the entire lengths of the place was constructed in glass so that guests inside the restaurant can take a look outside, and walk-by customers can see what’s cooking inside. There are usually parking spots outside the restaurant, so if you would like to drive by to hop in for a quick and delicious bite, you may. The atmosphere inside Shanghai Lane is pleasant; this place is particularly busy during lunch time and also at night with a fair amount of customers throughout the entire day. Shanghai Lane opens at 11:30am and remains open for around 12 hours.

The Food & Beverages: Shanghai Lane offers traditional Chinese cuisine from Shanghai. I love their dumplings, especially their fried ones – they are of a good size, I’d say that you can be done with a dumpling in 1 to 3 bites; they are evenly brown on the outside, and juicy from the inside (sorry that I cannot provide any pictures, I ate them too fast...:-) their dipping sauces (spicy sauce, soy sauce, vinegar) intensify the taste of the dumplings, but that is up to the individual anyway. Shanghai Lane’s steamed dumplings are very good too, but personally I just prefer their fried dumplings. Dumplings can be ordered as a side dish, or as a main with soup or whatever you find appealing; dumplings are offered free of meat or with meat. Their spring-rolls are pretty awesome too; very crispy from the outside with a hint of fresh cooking oil without overpowering the fresh ingredients; again you may choose between the veg or non-veg version. I tried their noodle soups and rice dishes too in the past and found all these dishes very yummy.

The Price: Today I ordered 8 steamed dumplings in soup as a set that came with a drink (I picked soy milk), 4 fried spring-rolls, and 4 fried dumplings; I did not feel like sitting among guests today and went for a take away; it literally took them 5 to 7 minutes to get the order ready; it all cost me exactly 100HK$ which is a reasonable price for the amount of food I ordered (which was sufficient for 2) and the quality of food.

Bottom-Line: Having lived in Shanghai for over a year and having tasted a wide variety of Shanghainese (and other) dumplings, I’d say they are doing a pretty good job there. All the food I tried so far was pretty good, both in terms of taste and quality of food; the restaurant is small, nonetheless you do not feel cramped when sitting in there (even during lunch); the atmosphere is pleasant with usually a mixed crowd consisting of younger and older people; the staff is attentive and friendly with quick service; the seats are comfortable, and it is interesting to watch people walking on the street while you dine. All in all - a nice place for a decent bite at a reasonable price. Hăo chī, xiè xie.
題外話/補充資料: authentic Shanghainese food, great dumplings, pretty good spring-rolls, pleasant atmosphere, quick service, friendly staff
