I love theme restaurants. I go to quite a few even when I'm traveling. Mui Kee Cookfood Stall is a restaurant that looks like a dai pai dong. Located in Tsim Sha Tsui, it's a popular place with a long queue. I've actually never been here but it seemed all my friends have and they seem to bring their tourist or new ex-pat friends here. They thought it was insane that I had never been here, so on this day, they took me here! Tonight I was the tourist!

We arrived at 6 PM and there was no queue so we got a table very quickly. However, as we ate, the place filled up quickly and there was long queue when we left around 9 PM.

The inside of the restaurant is set up to look like a dai pai dong, complete with plastic stools for sitting. The walls had maps of Hong Kong's transportation system. I thought that was pretty neat! Menu is in Chinese only. There is no service charge and cash only. Credit cards not accepted. Service was like a dai pai dong. No smiles but ask and they will quickly get it for you. Also, when we ordered, food came out 5 minutes later. Seriously. Five minutes later. The food was piping hot, too! How can you cook everything in 5 minutes??

Beer. We ordered Harbin beer which came in a big bottle. It was served in rice bowls instead of glasses. I don't know if it's the joy of drinking out of rice bowls and slamming them upside down when finished but the six of us ended up drinking 6 bottles of beer. This is something none of us have ever done before.

Octopus Mouth. This was really good. Fried and crunchy. Little balls of goodness.

Stir Fried Chives with Cashews and Dried Mini Fish. Chives were crunchy. Everything was crispy. There was also bits of scallop and dried shrimp as well.

Fried Squid Paste. I wasn't a fan of this as the squid paste didn't have any squid flavor at all. It just tasted like flour. But my friends seemed to love it.

Pork Knuckle. Not too salty and tasted more like honey ham. The dipping sauce was sweet and sour sauce that is usually used for roast duck or goose. Interesting that it was used here and it worked.

Morning Glory Stir Fried with Shrimp Paste. This was super oily but it was also fragrant with the shrimp paste. It was a touch spicy as well.

Stir Fried Black Pepper Beef with Green Peppers. This was a bit too spicy for me. But the beef was tender.

Oyster Omelette. Super crispy omelette with a lot of small oysters. This was a pretty good oyster omelette.

With four bowls of rice and a bottle of coke, the total came to $776. With six of us, it came to $130 per person. Pretty cheap. Portion size was generous. Dai pai dong experience in air conditioned environment. Fun to bring tourist friends.
