Envrionment: The place is small and only for about 15 customers at one time. The decoration is very basic. I like the use of black-boards and chalk for the daily specials. However, the ventilation is very poor, a strong greasy odour even a man with a flu can smell.
Food: The fish is okay. The chips are very chunky which one can expect from a British restaurant. The availability of A-1, HP sauces and brown vineger is just perfect for the Britiish-styled dishes.
Service: The service is so-so. Not great and not bad.
Bonus: The Times and the News of the World are available.
I would usually fully utilized my one and a half hours of lunch time, but today I cannot wait to come back to the office to leave this comment.
This is considerably one of the worst Fish and Chips I have ever had. The attitude of the waitress (Indian) was poor. The fries were poorly fried to the extent that I can even taste the oil.
When I asked the waitress to re-make the fries, which she did, I suspect the chef actually re-fried my initial oily fries, together with my initial alright fish. The end result was that I now had on my table an oily piece of fish and a bunch of fries that is nothing fanciful but a little bit oilier, smellier and softer than the original version.
The waitress did waive the charge on my beer. So I would definitely recommend anyone who wishes to have an oily dish in exchange for a free beer to go. Apart from that, I think this is a fair moment for people, I at least, to reconsider our usual practice to pay anything with a tag of the UK flag the price of double , for virtually the quality of zero sometimes.
I used to live close by and that was why I used to go to Chippy a lot. The food was reasonably priced and tasty, the service was quite good - All in all a good place to grab a quick bite before a wild night out.
However, things seemed to have changed when I went there last month. The place is now run by its Nepalese owner. The menu's still the same but the food portion has shrunk tremendously. I literally saw the chef counting the chips one by one - something I had never encountered in the UK, or anywhere else for that matter!
The fish was small and bland. The chips were hard and chewy. The meal was really disappointing. Having paid over 200 bucks for cod and chips twice, only one thing came to mind: never again!
If you are looking for good fish and chips, stick with the Irish pubs.

正宗Fish & Chips
一坐底, 這是傳統英國(有得坐)既Chippy, 除我一個華人外, 都是外籍人士居多.
入得Chippy, 當然要炸魚薯條, 中午餐用Sole Fillet, 一向不喜歡Mash Peas, 叫Baked Beans 做伴菜.
炸魚, 正式英式炸法, 層粉皮厚度適中, 加上 Tartar Source, 而且薯條是生切薯條, 應真令人懷念.
叫了一杯咖啡, Well! A mug of coffee, 英國平民Chippy, 一向一mug上, 而且用鮮牛奶, 別有風味啊.
個Set lunch要$90, 對我們中產人士, lunch, 貴!!

破戒了......
今天用膳的地方是頗隱蔽的Chippy,由下而上沿著石級一步步的走,看著地上的石級都是由當時的村民合力從海旁一步一步慢慢地抬上來堆而成。只有簡陋工具可用的村民,這份為其他市民無私服務的精神,實在值得一再提起溫故知新一番。
我一進店的時候,看到了跟上次(大約一年前)的裝份不一樣了。之前有很多小擺設和裝飾品,現在反而變得簡潔,加上用上了白和小許藍色,感覺上更令人舒服。看一下餐牌,發現加價了不少,或者是新人仕新作風,加上物價高漲,一點點的加幅還是可以接受。因為忘了先去ATM多拿點錢,身上的現金有限,最後只要了一份炸魚薯條午餐套餐。
剛落了單後,才發現兩位(應該是菲籍)侍應穿著接近水手裝的衣服,頗有趣。
一般食店在轉手後食物水準會下降,難得的是這裡沒有出現這個情況,反而在某方面比之前的做得更水色。離開時侍應打趣的問了小弟的名字,接著又問我會否再來光顧。我回頭笑著點了一下頭便步出店外了......

英倫國旗的Logo,就是我對這間Chippy的一份期待。
點了Full English Breakfast ($90),真的很豐富,難怪那麼多英國人都吃得胖胖的。兩隻煎蛋,兩條Cumberland sausage,新鮮原隻蕃茄,煙肉,磨菇,茄汁豆,從不喜歡吃茄汁豆的我都沾了不少來食,另還有多士。其實剛落單就眼見我們坐位旁的廚房開始動工。
Apply Crumble Pie With Custard ($45)。超級好味的甜點,很熱的脆碎粒,加上伴碟的Custard,跟蘋果批一凍一熱吃落的感覺別有一番滋味,還有蘋果肉,並不會很馬虎地份量很少。其實單吃這蘋果批已經覺得很Heavy。
還有隨早餐送的熱咖啡和OJ橙汁,唯一點點美中不足的就是他們沒有凍咖啡提供吧,提供多些選擇可吸引更多香港人前來呢。
若要選正宗的早餐,比起Flying Pan,這裡比較特別吧。至於地點,雖則未算很偏僻,不過若不用心看真的很容易走漏眼的。
那份油煙味,的確有點嚇一跳,不過店舖裡的佈置,牆上的黑板Menu讓人有親切感覺;至於藍色梳化藍色棉咕臣都讓我們坐得很舒服。包場了一陣子,其後就有不少外國人進來光顧,觀察他們才知道這些英式早餐要慢慢享受。

Oily
This is considerably one of the worst Fish and Chips I have ever had. The attitude of the waitress (Indian) was poor. The fries were poorly fried to the extent that I can even taste the oil.

不過,出動前有兩件事情要先完成: number 1 接Jessalyn,弟弟以後的tutor & number 2 blood test... (是我最害怕的)
... 又碰上那個short-haired 的護士... 又抽不出血... 又把針插在手內不上不下的... 痛的要命! 害到我有兩隻瘀青的手陪我去吃飯...
餐廳是Chippy,專賣英國的fish & chips... 雖然它近來在openrice的劣評如潮,但我還是要試... 全因為看完Literature in English的指定電影<East is East>, 內面Mr Khan開的店也叫George’s English Chippy, 所以感到好奇
我的選擇是:Beef and Onion Pie, served with chips, baked beans and gravy
beef pie 味道和口感皆not bad, 外皮鬆軟,牛肉是用黑椒調味的... 很碎很鬆... onion 的味食不出來... 那些beans 吃第一口還覺行... 不知道為什麼愈吃 味道愈怪... chips 不太脆, 很香... 我一開始點了英國的HP sauce... 未試過... 比蕃茄醬酸, 帶點酒味
... potato & tomato... 始終是絕配
其實這一回還有另一個mission: Mother’s Day Present... 到IFC Mall 看看... 發生了一件奇事... 明天再告訴大家

正所謂
對我呢類老坑來講,什麼已不重要,反而在意身處幾千里外的前度養子之小島內,能否尋回昔日的風味?很久之前聽聞隱身砵典乍街的小店Chippy,被譽為最正宗的炸魚薯條.一直很想前往,但往往擦身而過,日前收工要出中環搞點事,即慶地捉住左個在中環番工,同樣亦係好想一嘗此味的朋友來試.
七點多來到,門口已不見昔日路過見到的剪報,入到去,只見兩名尼泊爾人主持大局.個心即刻涼左一截.既來之則安之,來到點都要叫客傳統Fish & Chips加Green peas.
傳統即係用銀鱈魚,如果想要高級少少,可叫條Sole.不過就唔會係Dover sole.
上桌一看,單看外表就似樣,Mushy peas同Chips完全係英式味道,條Cod就有點失手,脆漿重手過頭,上桌果陣已經唔多熱,更遑論脆口?接下來的Sole,換湯唔換藥.要對比的話,係條Sole肉質,係比鱈魚幼細嫩滑.你同我都識分.
加罐Boddington,再來罐汽水,埋單$200,感到深深不忿.
香港咁多英國鬼旅居,總有一兩間鎮場來供級此等異鄉人,一些身心慰籍.未計已執的S&M,Soho小店Corner Shop已經很接近.
其他的,唯有繼續追尋....

Set Lunch Menu:
A. fish and chips
- 果魚個層皮好厚,落得太多炸粉。chips太小了,唔夠10條。
B. futtacini tomato pasta
- 完全無味,好唔掂,食淨晒。(好彩有gravy提供,唔係一定食唔到落肚)
C. pepperoni pizza
- 有係完全無味,凈係得芝士同辣肉腸。鹽同胡椒粉都無落。無味。
我都好少評得咁低分,但係食物真係好唔得,同外國真野真係差好遠。

久違了... 炸魚薯條
因為去的時候已經有點晚,大部分食客都差不多快吃完,所以我那份\'熱辣辣\'的fish & chips 不用等很就便有得吃了. Batter 厚度剛好,只是邊邊有一點厚.個人認為魚就不太新鮮啦.始終在香港吃的魚跟在英國或澳紐吃的魚(柳)是有點不一樣.稍嫌它的tartare sauce 有點膩,不夠酸,吃下去很明顯有吃下一口口油的感覺.檸檬只有一小塊,要是大塊一點就好了.
不得不提的是它頗特別的薯條.老闆說是用了糖分比較高的薯仔,所以吃下有些甜甜地.亦因為糖分較高,所以很快會焦,因此外皮就比較黑啦.
味道只是普通,而且太貴啦。吃的其實是那份情懷!以前在奧克蘭的時候是拿著用紙包著的炸魚薯條坐在海邊,吹著海風吃的!

Fish n chips
肥佬同事曾在英國賣fish & chips (特別的experience & skill)~ 所以今日的意見特別多, 總結如下:「洋蔥幾新鮮; 炸魚脆漿ok但魚不新鮮, 薯條是翻炸的, 整體水準跟街邊的café差不多, apple crumble不香脆, 蘋果肉不夠, 欠誠意, vinegar沖得太淡, 簡直是偷工減料之作, 我係唔會再去食架喇」
反觀坐在對面既我就食得津津有味, 第一次吃嘛~ 我覺得整體上又不如肥佬所言的不堪...
Fish & chips - 比想像中大碟, chips比較好吃
vegetable pie - 批的外皮好生, 有糊口的感覺
apple crumble & custard - custard太鮮色, 蘋果肉份量不多, 外層不香脆, 整體的texture都不合格
另外, 見到貨架上有一大樽Pickled egg, 有點想試試…
後記: 飯後, 我覺得…「我係一條薯條」, 成身都係呢陣除^^
