A few years back a famous "Socialite" almost coined a catchphrase "That's Hot". Then the catchphrase inevitably became the most overused hype for a year or two, and then, it, and the creator, seemed to have fallen off the radar completely.
On a desperate attempt to grab lunch at peak hours, this shop certainly has drawn my attention. Located in a rather tucked away side of Cross Lane, away from the schools and halfway towards the Wan Chai Park, it is no surprise that this place hasn't gotten much attention over the course of its opening since half a year ago. It wouldn't have caught my attention either, if it wasn't for that flashing fluorescent sign, the place probably wouldn't even be packed in the midst of lunch peak hours! We squeezed in on the corner at 1pm sharp, and around us were OL's bending over head down slurping up snowy white noodles from a seemingly fiery red broth, with a glossy float of chili oil on the surface. The serving seemed large, and from the sweat beads running down the cosmetics-clad cheeks and chins, I think I just may find a joint with hot-enough noodles...
"大腸小鍋米線" arrived first. The intestines were simmered slow and long in the five spice marinade for quite a while, hence the dark brown exterior. The texture was cooked through without the horrid rubberiness you may find in many. The broth was steamy hot when served, but surprisingly light in taste. Cubes of marinated tofu float atop the noodles, among green chives and coriander leaves.
"麻辣米線" was exactly the same as the previous one, except that there was no tofu in it, replaced by "Sichuan Chili sauce blend". I added additional ingredients from a list, such as "braised pork belly" and "red cooked riblets". Surprisingly enough this one and the previous one tasted quite the same, yet the numbing sensation was too mild to be noticed. The broth was clearly the same one as well -- too light to be called "spicy". The next thing springs to mind was these people surrounding us, whose sweating while slurping up these noodles, or wiping their noses through the process...were they all tasting the same heat level as mine? Or did they all catch the flu and happened to be in the same resturant on the same day as we did? The 'pork belly' was nowhere near braised and the riblets weren't cooked long enough to be buttery tender either. It's disappointingly mild overall.
"涼拌米線" is of so-so satisfactory level only. Here's why. First of all you will get the neatly arranged serving pictured above (the soft cooked eggs were, clearly not the molten yolk ones as pictured in the menu). The cucumbers and carrots were cut into thin shreds, chives were arranged nicely and in the center a "sweet and sour" meat sauce combining minced pork, pickled mustard greens and chilies, atop what I may perceived as "cold noodles". I was wrong about the noodles. The bowl was chilled but the noodles were steaming when served, while other ingredients were fridge-cold. The eggs were cooked too long and the meat sauce was nowhere near sweet and sour at the same time. It's like the flavours have hit the spot but have not developed any further depth. You could taste the sweetness, and tartness from vinegar, and the mild sting of chilies, but everything just stopped the moment you tasted it, and the ridiculously warm noodles were just too funny.
"豆花米線" was a different matter. With chopped peanuts scattered all over on the top. The noodles were chilled this time, and with mildly flavoured soft tofu atop the noodles, followed by peanuts. This one, with an additional order of red-cooked meat, was better than I expected. The tofu was soft and velvety smooth despite the taste of soy bean too light to be considered "good tofu". The peanuts offered a delightful crunch to the dish, and the red-cooked meat was fatty and moist and flavorful with a mastery blend of five spice. The sweet-chili sauce accompanying the tofu resembled somewhat like a common chili sauce soused with garlic. It's oddly satisfying a treat.
We have chosen our favorites at this little joint. Yet the recurring problem seems to be a lack of depth in the flavours in its limited choices on the menu. I have hoped that my relatively high chili-heat tolerance can get me to scream "That's Hot!!" from noodles here, followed by the pumping heart and running sweatbeads. Not a chance here. The sweet, tart, or heat should go further down to one end of the spectrum instead of now, barely hitting the satisfaction level, not to mention hitting the spot at all. Mildness was all over in my tastebuds' memories of the noodle soups here. I may return for the 豆花米線, if only I could have a better Tofu to go with it. Having had meals here, I realized that this little joint has not gotten much attention since its opening, may not be so far as the location not being exclusive enough.It may be of some other obvious reason too close to the palates of the clientele...Perhaps anyone who seeks the excitement of anything remotely "hot" can move on with their search elsewhere.

::: 豆漿 ::: $6

ok la

突然間聽到把女仔得來又ok磁性既聲wo(比我男朋友知實嬲死佢)
