When TONKICHI was literally the only Tonkatsu specialist back in the days, I have always wondered what the fuss was about. To me the Panko crust here was decent but not as good as those in Japan, and the pork flavour or texture was way off the Japanese standards.

Haven't been back for a while and ordered the most expensive Kagoshima Premium Pork Set @$198.

    - The pork was slightly dry and thin, but for a so called premium quality pork was completely tasteless. Even Don Don Ya has a better version these days...
    - The rice was not bad but slightly broken and over cooked.
    - The salad sauces and Tonkatsu sauce was good though.

Overall, it is just not the type of Tonkatus shop I would pay for and take a gamble again.

Great food, rude waitresses Smile Nov 09, 2012
Share with MessengerShare on TwitterShare on Facebook
The staff here isn't very friendly to English speakers. Food was great and of high standard. Prices are expensive, but the quality is good.
The waitress we had was very rude and kept on getting frustrated everytime we ran the bell. There is no service if kyou sit in the back room.
We ordered a pork cutlet set and kstsudon. Both were of great quality fried in clean oil. Shrimp was also big and juicy.

You get what you pay for and dishes are very authentic. Even the rice was very good. Too bad service is bad.

USE TO be good.  Just OK Oct 25, 2011
Share with MessengerShare on TwitterShare on Facebook
Tonkichi use to be my favorite Tonkatsu restaurant in HK but recently, its gotten alot worst. I dont know what happened but the quality of the food dropped yet the price went up. Other than the food quality everything is about the same and nothing has changed, especially the wait line.

The pork cutlet use to be tender and juicy, but the last couple times i went the meat happened to have alot more fat in it but even with that extra fat the pork was very dry (bbq pork dry ''cha siu''). Worst of all which is one thing i cant stand was the cutlet was luke warm as if it has been sitting out for at least 5-10 minutes.

The fried prawn hasn't changed and it's still extremely good. Same said about the friend oysters.

So really in the end their signature dish has extremely dissapointed me, I have no problem paying the price but if im not getting that quality of what i pay for then ill have to think twice before dining at Tonkichi Tonkatsu.

Heavenly Made Tonkatsu! Smile May 24, 2011
Share with MessengerShare on TwitterShare on Facebook
Keeping away from all the lovely fatty foods for a while, I was quite elated to dine at Tonkitsu tonight. I had ordered as much as I want to fill my long awaited stomach, SCREW THE FAT!!!

There wasn't as much people waiting to dine in as it was years ago, I guess its because we now have more as fascinating options around. Still we had to wait for about 15 minutes for our table, but later I found out there was actually a few available seats in the restaurant. I hope they are not trying to create an illusion of popularity here.

    1) Kimchi Tofu
Average - Kimchi OK, Tofu too Rough
Average - Kimchi OK, Tofu too Rough

It's not the first time I had this and it's also not the first time I wondered why a Japanese restaurant would offer Kimchi dish. Kimchi and tofu doesn't seem fusion to me. Anyhow, the kimchi was good. The combination of spiciness, sourness and sweetness were almost perfect, just if the spiciness could tune up a bit. The tofu was on the other hand quite disappointing, the texture was rather rough.

    2) The Condiment
    Love the sesame grinding experience
    Love the sesame grinding experience

I personally reckon the sesame grinding experience was fun and should add points to all Tonkatsu restaurants that provide this experience. The sesame seeds in Tonkichi smell amazing. On the grinding pot, there was two different utensils - one for you to grind the sesame, the other for you to mix the Tonkatsu sauce in. The Tonkatsu sauce was very thick which needed to add in quite a lot to mixed them together fully. I like to have the sesame seeds coarsely grinded.

In the condiment set, there was also two salad dressings - Pomelo or Sesame dressing for the shredded lettuce. The salad dressing was not as nicely done as before - the Pomelo dressing wasn't as freshly tasted, the sesame dressing sauce didn't possess much sesame taste. To be honest, I could not really tell the difference between the two dressing, despite the Pomelo dressing was a bit more sour than the sesame dressing. May be the recipe has changed.

    3) The Twin Tonkatsu set
    Lovely Katsu Twin Set
    Lovely Katsu Twin Set

Despite the Twin Tonkatsu set, I also ordered the Crabstick Cream Croquette and the Fried Prawn. I was quite surprised they were all served on the same plate at the same time. I was worried about the food temperature for a while but found everything was kept hot/warm. So its good.
Ok but Pork Cutlet was better than Loin!
Ok but Pork Cutlet was better than Loin!

For the twin set, there were Pork Loin and Pork Cutlet, both possessed the perfect golden brown look. I am more fond of the loin, it was much more tender and juicer than the pork cutlet. The pork cutlet was more lean though. Both of the breading was very well done, it was extremely crispy but NOT oily at all - which was impressive. The bread crusting was really light in texture too.

    4) Crabstick Cream Croquette
    Too liquidly-creamy
    Too liquidly-creamy

The cream filling within the croquette was made extremely fresh and hot. The cream paste was quiet thick in texture and tasted very similar to a thickened cream chowder soup but replaced by a mild crab taste. However, the cream paste couldn't totally fill the croquette which left some hollow space at side. Although the croquette ingredients were fresh, I don't like it much. I don't particularly like its texture as the cream croquette I usually get in Japan's restaurants are more solid-creamy not liquid-creamy ones.

    5) Fried Prawn
    The fried Shrimp was nice:)
    The fried Shrimp was nice:)

The prawn size was unexpectedly huge(in length) but was rather thin in diameter. The breading was again crispy but not oily, yet it could not withhold the juiciness of the prawn within the crust. The fried prawn was pretty dull in general, but was better than any prawn tempura due to its nicely done bread crusting.

    6) Rice and shredded cabbage
Despite the katsu we had, Tonkichi also provides unlimited shredded lettuce and rice to their customers. The shredded lettuce was cold and slightly moist when served which was nice. The size of the lettuce was shredded quite uniformly, I wonder if its done by machine. The rice on the other hand was too soggy, each rice particle literally stick together. I actually prefer they charge the rice but provide better quality.

    7) Dessert
    Very Sweet
    Very Sweet

For dessert, we had a plate of watermelon each from the set. The watermelon was pretty sweet (soaked in sweet water? Hmmmm, suspicious.) I was craving for other desserts but found there weren't much choice on the menu - only four of them and they are mostly ice-cream that didn't interest me. I didn't take any in the end.

    8) Braised Pork with Miso Soup
Nice bowl of braised pork miso soup
Nice bowl of braised pork miso soup

Nearly forgot this good bowl of miso soup. I added approx. $15 in additional to change the traditional miso soup into this braised pork miso soup. The soup literally tasted pretty much the same with miso soup but thicker and with a slight pork taste.

Overall, I do love dinning in this restaurant as the Tonkatsu was the best among all the Tonkatsu restaurants that I have tried in HK. My 2 people dinner costs $500 but we ordered crazily much. I would say it was quite pricey, but the quality does worth it (except the rice which I was disappointed this time.)

One of my favorite japanese restaurants in hong kong
    - only bad thing: NEED TO WAIT FOR A LONG TIME before being seated
    - Reservations need to be made at least a week in advanced
    - The unlimited rice and salad is awesome, especially when the seaweed dressing is that good
    - Service has been constantly decent
    - perfect place for a casual meal

    吉列豬柳 vs 吉列豬扒
    - I prefer 吉列豬柳 over 吉列豬扒
    - 吉列豬柳 has more fat, 口感and a meatier taste compared to the 豬扒. 豬扒 is also harder and thinner.
(If you would like to compare both, there is a set where both is offered)

    炸蝦
    - the dough is too thick
    - only decent
    - If you want quality shrimp tempura, head to Inigiku

    滑蛋豬柳饭
    - With their perfectly fried pork, this dish obviously cannot be bad. However, I think Ginza Bairen makes a better 滑蛋豬柳饭 especially the one you order off the menu.

What my friends and I always do is get an extra bowl of curry/egg sauce OR one gets the egg rice, the other gets the 豬柳set. This way, you can satisfy all your different cravings at one go.

TIP: never order the watermelon juice. The glass is too small for the price they are charging. If you think this meal is too 热气, you are better off drinking some 24 herbs at a local chinese store.

Not stable quality Just OK Aug 30, 2010
Share with MessengerShare on TwitterShare on Facebook
I try this res many times before. It always is one of my favourite res. Tonight, I have friend gathering at this res and find the food quality is decreasing / not stable. Last time, i had the 吉列豬柳 + 炸蝦 set, he food quality is ok but the 炸蝦 are not straight. But tonight, 吉列豬扒 is dry + clothing of 吉列豬柳 are loose. The taste is poor huffy. Also, the waitresses never refill the tea unless I ask them. I guess the reason for decraesing is: they open new shop. sad

TALK ABOUT OVER PRICED (Now) Cries Jul 16, 2010
Share with MessengerShare on TwitterShare on Facebook
shocked I have been to Tonkichi a few times before over the last few years and I must admit those first couple times were truly outstanding, mmmmmmm deep fried breaded pork chops!!!! Delicious to say the least. However last time I visited Tonkichi in Causeway Bay the quality of the food has declined a lot. What they are serving is no longer good quality pork but they are still charging high prices. I left the place feeling really upset that I had spent over $300 per person for dry, tough, mediocre pork lions and fillets and rice huffy

Best to avoid this place unless you like your pork dry & tough and overpriced!

    Will not be going back.

Kraving Katsu? Smile Jul 04, 2010
Share with MessengerShare on TwitterShare on Facebook
Japanese Katsu or cutlets, commonly associated with the golden brown deep-fried breaded cutlets of meats and seafood. Definitely always a welcome food - who can quibble with deep-fried? Of course, for the few of us who do try to watch what we eat or eat the good stuff sparingly, we try to limit our katsu intake. But if most seem to think it's the best in the territory, any foodie worth her salt must try.

Unfortunately, there are many rules to dining at Tonkichi. First, take a number. Then you must ensure your whole party has arrived before you can seat. Thirdly, you only have an hour and 15 minutes to down it all, while trying to savor the experience. Hmm... pretty stressful. I can't believe the people who have voted this place "romantic". Far from it unless HongKongers have begun to like romance the way they work and live - Hectic!

We get seated, order the staples and told we need to wait about 15 to 20 mins for the food to arrive. Ok, that means 60 to 55 minutes to eat! Added stress... but we get a bowl of sesame seeds to play with. For the obsessive compulsive, you can grind away without engaging in conversation till your food arrives. Pretty good idea, huh? There are various schools of thought about how fine you need to go. I don't think there's a right answer. Ultimately, you need to pour the brown katsu sauce over it to get a sesame infused sauce. It's like peanut butter - do you like yours smooth or crunchy?

Exactly 15 minutes later, our tenderloin arrives. Note: there are 2 kinds of pork on offer - we chose the tenderloin over the fillet because we were told it has more marbling, juicier, and tastier. Check, check, and check.

And since the name of the restaurant has the word seafood in it, of course we order the assortment of shrimp, scallop, oyster and for good measure, a crab mayo croquette. I liked them all - very fresh and lightly done so as to retain the natural juicy crunchiness of each distinct piece of fruity de mare. The only one I didn't like was the crab croquette - way too much mayo for my liking and hardly any taste of crab.

Overall, I can see why people like this place. The cutlets are all done to perfection ie. well-fried and not greasy at all. Light and super crisp. Also, the use of good pork and seafood of course adds to the greatness of the cutlets. And for the health conscious, the free-flow of chilled shredded cabbage throughout the meal soaks up any grease, and helps you eat more than you should.

I'm not the sort to brave the queues ever so often but if I ever get a craving for katsu, this place certainly makes the list.

Yum Yum.....! Very impressed with the quality of the food, and in fact the service, considering we essentially ordered a plate of fried meats and fish. We ordered the (something comparable to a refined KFC) variety meal, which feeds 3 then added an extra 3 scallops. The Scallops, oysters and pork loin were fantastic, cooked delicately succulant in the inside with a crisp and light batter on the outside. Simple food which left the freshness of the ingredients and aptitude of the cooking no where to hide! It didn't disappoint!

The meal also came with miso soup, prawns, pork cutlets plus unlimited rice & shredded cabbage, all condimented by a number of interesting sauces.

    Definitely will revisit

What happened? Cries Jan 15, 2010
Share with MessengerShare on TwitterShare on Facebook
I used to be a huge fan of Tonkichi, and come here often. But tonight, it's a big disappointment!! There are 3 major changes as far as I can tell:
    1) The food is not hot when served, only lukewarm. You know how bad that is for deep fried food. We had to ask for an exchange of the pork tenderloin because they look a little raw. Then, when a new slice came back, it's still lukewarm only!
    2) The seafood (including shrimps and oysters) are quite a bit smaller than before
    3) Even the watermelon that they serve in the end is in thinner slices!

Overall, I just find tonight's dining experience at Tonkichi a big disappointment. They used to be so good and I wonder what's going on....are they putting in some cost cutting measures? I would much rather they raise the price (which is already a little high) so that they can keep up with their quality! The last thing I want is to waste my "unhealthy food" quota on something that's only average quality.

Well, I hope that tonight's experience is just an exception, so that I can enjoy their good quality soon again.

Yummy tonkatsu.... Smile Dec 22, 2009

So I came here with a friend for lunch today. I've been hearing quite a lot about this place and wanted to see if the food was as good as people said. Came here at 11:45AM (they open 12PM) so we got seats the minute they opened. Lines didn't look that long today (even when we left at 1PM) but I definitely would suggest coming here early.

Environment: Seats are ok (a little on the hard side) but place is pretty comfortable and well lit. We had a table with a harbor view so that was pretty nice.

Service: Service was spot on. Efficient and friendly. Food came out super quick and when we asked for an extra bowl of rice it literally came out 20 seconds later. Nice.

    Onto the food:

chopstick Deep Fried Soft Shell Crab - This was a nice way to start and quite yummy. The crab was crispy and full of flavor. The sauce (similar to a soy sauce) was a nice compliment. Good way to start the meal.

chopstick Tonkatsu Set Lunch - One bite of the tonkatsu and I understand why this place is so popular. The tonkatsu was flavorful, crispy and light (not oily at all). I was really surprised since it almost seems like they 'air-fried' it. Meat was on the lean side but it didn't matter in this case. It was kind of nice you could freshly grind sesame seeds to mix in with your tonkatsu sauce. Personally I found the sauce a little too thick but it still tasted pretty good. The bowl of rice was a pretty big bowl (for set lunch standards) and the shredded lettuce salad tasted pretty fresh. Usually I don't eat shredded lettuce salads (they are more like garnishes) but the seaweed dressing at Tonkichi went pretty well with it. Yum.

My friend ordered the tonkatsu don but I personally thought it was only average mainly because it was drenched in sauce and tasted a little soggy.

Overall I was pretty happy with my meal. It's a little on the pricey side...$200 each to share an appetizer and have a set lunch but next time I am craving tonkatsu I am definitely going to come back.

Went there for lunch with my friend. We were there at around 12:50pm and there was already a queue. Thank goodness the queue was not too long. We managed to get a table, but it was not a window seat, which was a bit disappointing. Nevertheless, we ordered the following food:

    1) Mix Pork Cutlet and 豬柳 - it was excellent!!! Loved the Japanese salad dressing and the Japanese dip for the pork!!!

    2) Appetizer: Soft Shell Crab: not my favorite, but definitely delicious!!!

Service was not too bad and we were both satisfied with our lunch!!

However, I wish there were more choices apart from just having fried pork cutlets all the time and perhaps a broader variety of food, such as sushi, ramen, etc.

Also, I find it a bit overpriced, but overall, it's definitely worth trying!!!
