After spending a thoughtful evening at the cozy Chinese cafe at the Baptist University Art branch, I suddenly wanted to have some quality steak. I haven’t had any good meat when I was in our 27-day escape in Chiang Mai last month. Chiang Mai is vegetarian based.
Then, Lok House Restaurant popped up in my mind.
Located on the ground floor of my building, Lok House is a ‘Cha Can Tan/茶餐廳’, a Cantonese phrase meaning typical HK style low to medium priced restaurants (茶=Tea, 餐廳=House). It’s neat and clean, but never looking impressive. This is why I am impressed they serve good rib eye, ox tongue and unique home-made desserts!
Or I should say, most of the time they serve middle-quality steak and foods; you need to choose carefully.
Rib eye with buttered potatoes and veggies (168HKD/16 euros, wine/drink and soup included, no 10% service charge needed): they serve very good quality US rib eye! The cooking technique as well as the quality of that piece of meat is in the same level as popular cafes such as Café Habitu and Simply Life, which are at Festival Walk shopping mall, with 7 minutes of brisk walk from here. Habitu is 188HKD for only the steak, while Simply Life includes generous salad of beetroot and greens, together with iced fruit tea/coffee. Both need service charge, and they are always in hustle and bustle, but here at Lok House I can enjoy my food at slow pace, or if I’m bored, I just need to look up ---- the TV is on the wall!
The US rib eye is tender and quite juicy, not rough at all. The cook does nice seasoning but it was not hot enough when being served to my table. I asked them to re-heat it.
It is not oily, but it does have a large portion of fat cells, which you can totally omit! The sweetened soy sauce is on the plate in shape of a wave, while they also provide typical meat sauce. However, this piece of meat is good in quality that any sauce flavor would spoil its taste.
The potatoes are so buttery in taste in every single inch of them. Eccellente! Veggies are not enough. Meat lovers always need some veggies to balance off the consequence of a meaty meal, but typical HK restaurants are always lack of veggies.

For afternoon tea, they have ox tongue with instant noodles, 25HKD including a drink. Very unique for HK cafes! It has around 5 pieces, fabulously pan-fried, very very nice .

For desserts, apart from waffles with ice cream, they also have green tea tofu pudding and mango pudding with sweetened black sticky rice (15HKD a la carte, 25-30HKD tea set). Such innovative and refreshing combinations!
However, I was very disappointed with roasted angus rib finger skewer (58HKD/5euros), very very small in portion.
