Hands down the worst sushi experience of my life. After reading some of the comments below, I am so happy to hear that I am not the only one who thought the chefs, waiters and waitresses were excessively pushy - only interested in serving the most expensive cuts of sushi.

My husband and I are orginally from London, however we'd lived in Hiroo, Tokyo, for 8 years before relocating to Hong Kong. We had heard about this restaurant through an aquaintence and were curious to try given the location is a bit different from our usually restaurant haunts. Unfortunately, we sat at the bar and we were left in the hands of the sushi chef who pushed starting with sashimi even though the two of us were hungry and suggested sushi.

After about eight pieces of sashimi, I decided to take a look at the menu. It is no wonder the Sushi Chef recommended sashimi as it was more than DOUBLE the price of sushi! I then asked the waitress how mush this meal would be for omekase and she said between HK$800-HK$1000. I thought to myself, more than I would like to spend, but we are here so lets try it.

The bill at the end of the night was just over HK$3,500 with ONE BEER. The Chef took advantage of us and didn't tell us he was serving us a special konchshells etc.

I am so dissappointed and would report this restaurant to the police if I thought they would do anything.

I completely agree with Intrped that SUSHI SHIN is more interested in boosting their profit margins than providing excellent customer service and experience.

I am a Japanese/Chinese American who grew up in Hong Kong, went to Uni in the USA and spent the last 5 years living in Tokyo prior to coming home to Hong Kong. Last night I was sitting at the sushi bar with my husband (gwai lo) and I was shocked that the sushi chef continued to push the most expensive cuts of sushi on our plates. When I asked for sushi and instead he said, "No, you don't like sashimi; try sashimi" and placed down two hunks of toro which were HK$500 per person. In less than 10 minutes our bill was over HK$1,200.

I am incredibly dissappointed with the lack of honesty and integrity of the staff and sushi chef at Sushi Shin. This would have never happened in New York or Tokyo. Omekase in a top sushi restaurant in New York is usually less than USD$120 and Tokyo JPY20,000. The quality of the fish was excellent here, but the inegrity of the staff and especially the sushi chef was 100% lacking.

I will NEVER eat at SUSHI SHIN AGAIN nor recommend this to a friend.

This is the kind of sushi place for the Mainlander's who mix green tea with a 20 year old single malt scotch. Or a place you'd catch that idiot Puff Daddy because he heard it was expensive.

Visited Sushi Shin a couple of times this year 2011. Very good quality sushi, but shocked at my first bill of 1200 as I didn't had that much. Stop going after a couple of times, when I they served Canadian Uni in the 3 assortment don, after serving Hokkaido uni in my last few visits. Feedback from the waitress that it is the standard uni for don. Good quality food, but felt that the shop is focusing on maximising their profits instead of delighting their customers.

They later sent over a plate of sashimi that's way over what my husband and I could finish (bear in mind that I specifically told them I couldn't eat much given my appetite). It's as if they wanted to maximize what they could sell you. After sashimi, they gave us each three pieces of sushis. That's it - no more no less. Guess what was the number I saw when they gave me the check? It's HK$1900 (without not a drop of alcohol)! You won't even spend that much for that quantity and quality of food at some of the top Japanese restaurants.

Conclusion:
Almost any Japanese restaurant you can find in HK offers the same quality if not better for a much more reasonable price. There's no point of going all the way there for their food.

Footnote:
I've never offered my comment on line before. I figured word by mouth would be enough to put bad restaurants out of business. My experience at Sushi Shi was so bad that I decided to speak up.

I cannot resist on posting my 1st comment on Openrice after I've tried this restaurant...The waitress & chef welcomed us warmly when we entered the restaurant, creating a homely & friendly atmosphere. The chef there was excellent in selling that he kept on promoting different food throughout our meal. Based on my expererience, the food was just fair. I cannot consider this as a high end restaurant except for its price. Why spend several thousands per head on such a tiny local HK Japanese restaurant??? I really don't understand why people would recommend this. There are much better Japanese restaurants with better food, service, & ambiance in town at even lower price. I will never go to Sushi Shin again.

鮨辰是我最近很喜歡的日本食店其中之一,總共惠顧了三次, 每次也是沒有令我失望的,今次和三五知己約定是次是瘋狂地吃,所以由店內的傑師傅因應我們的喜愛,和是日精選幫我哋發辦,首先是左口魚邊,深海池魚和唔記得的比較淡味的魚生,繼而就是主角拖羅,我次次都會食幾種唔同嘅整法,有魚生啦,火炙啦,醃製ga la,和那個入口溶化的手卷.之後就是我的最愛海膽喇!嘩!起好味呀!這裏的炸物也是做得很好的,例如炸明太子就像食梗薯片一樣脆,而炸豬扒鬆化得嚟又juicy喎!還有sake也很好飲的,我至愛是一期一會這支酒喇!不過有少少貴啦!但好在就算是House Sake也不錯的!就這樣子過了一個快樂滿足嘅晚上喇!

First visit was last month. It was a week day lunch and I let the sushi chefs take care of my order as they knew me and knew my preference from Kenjo days. It was different but not so different from Kenjo that I was not prepared to give it another chance.

My wife and I went for a lazy afternoon lunch last Saturday. Despite having booked a table, we had to wait for a short while. No issue with that as Kenjo also had the same problem, I said to myself.

As the sushi master recognised me, he sent in my favourite appetizer as an apology (and I must add, it was not free). The price was similar to Kenjo's but 50% of the size. OK, I would make a mental note of that.

I then ordered the self-pick sushi set. All the standard stuff was there but instead of a variety of daily specials like Kenjo, here they had only a couple and they were rather ordinary, nothing to write home for. The size of the fish was noticeably smaller but even the amount of rice in each sushi was also significantly smaller than Kenjo's.

My wife had the pork cutlet which was nicely prepared and at a reasonable price.

Ice cream or coffee came as part of the set, similar to Kenjo, and no surprises there.

It seemed this restaurant had more families as patrons on that day, possibly because of the location but sitting next to crying babies and helpers (not eating) and toddlers in constant tantrums with parents on their back was not what I expected or wanted as part of my lunch.

One more thing, if at all possible, try to avoid the little room at the back. It is small, stucked behind the kitchen facing the washroom and when there are toddlers throwing a fit, it is recipe for disappointing meal.

So, there you go. Would I go back again? May be but possibly not for sushi/sashimi and definitely not on weekends for lunch.

與便當同來的有一點點的漬物,又紅又黃的日本蘿蔔吃起來非常爽脆有咬口,且也是一貫的非常之鹹,之後也先攻向要快點吃的壽司,是日六件壽司包括墨魚、三文魚、赤身、瀨尿蝦、池魚及油甘魚,雖不是貴價的魚,但要試上師傅的握功,米飯的調配,已經可知這店子做壽司的手勢。

先吃油甘,油甘魚爽得來有點魚的油脂香,實在難得的在午市也吃到這個質素的魚生;反光的池魚吃入口,那陣魚油的香味更強,搭上薑蔥中和一點池魚濃一點的腥味,也是鮮美好吃;瀨尿蝦甚有個性,拆了肉輕輕燒過的瀨尿蝦塗了點如鰻魚汁的甜醬油,吃起來這個甜味帶起了瀨尿蝦含蓄的蝦味,瀨尿蝦入口不會很實,但又不會霉霉軟軟的,真有驚喜。

墨魚一向也是個人不大喜歡之物,吃入口一貫很漿口,但至少是一點腥味異味也沒有,而且也有着墨魚濃烈的味道,說實話,如愛吃墨魚刺身之人,應該也會欣賞的;三文魚也是本人一向不太愛的刺身,是日避無可避,吃入口有着一貫三文魚肥美甘香的味道,口感就是滑得不太討好,這可也是我不愛三文魚刺身的原因之一;剩下的赤身一點筋也沒有,雖然看其脂肪比例連中Toro都不如,但難得赤身入口也有吞拿的脂香,以午市來說,魚類算是新鮮。

至於師傅的握功,米飯的調配又如何?飯團大小均勻,每件都能被魚生完全覆蓋,飯身不散,用上筷子夾起十秒也不是問題,加上醋味溫和,調得恰到好處,溫度適中,飯沒有過熱沒有過冷放濕了,這個環節也做得很好;至於店家用的Wasabi雖不是新鮮生磨,但至少不是牙膏貨,辣度及攻鼻度足夠。

吃過了壽司,就吃一碟有如漬物又有如煮物的東西了,一條幼幼的青瓜切成極薄的一層層,漬來吃更易入味,也看到師傅的刀法,果然吃起來是清清的鹹味,不落俗套而且非常之爽口;另有一堆昆布,煮得軟腍而吸收了點汁,味道清清的真不錯;八爪魚片切得薄薄的,吃起來煙韌有咬口,配了點清清的汁及面層撒上的一點芝麻,味道方面簡單得來滲入一點變數。

之後轉而攻向燒物,一件燒玉子及燒鰻魚,玉子厚度夠而吃起來尚有溫度,雖然放橫切面來看,玉子是不夠層次,但吃入口都依稀吃得到點點層層的口感,加上至少不水汪汪,而且都算有點蛋香的,甜甜的當然好吃;燒鰻魚塗上的鰻魚燒汁夠哂味,鰻魚肉厚,入口彈牙又煙韌,確是吃得過之物。

最後吃的是揚物,是日天婦羅的款式有蝦、蕃薯、魚及冬菇,也先不要說每件的味道,光是看天婦羅的炸漿夠薄,隔了一段時間吃仍覺脆,已經是非常之棒,可惜是油了一點;至於材料方面,蝦雖不太大但夠爽口,冬菇鮮嫩美味,魚柳有咬口不霉腍,蕃薯雖可以再粉一點,但都非常之甜香;所以總括來說,其實店家都有點功架,如主力不是吃揚物的一餐,是絕對可以接受的質素。

吃了一點一點的食物,其實是已經吃了不少鹹食,但還要吃店家奉上的甜品,有豆腐雪糕及芝麻雪糕供人客選擇,在二擇其一之下,選了較清的豆腐雪糕,雪糕看似是自家製,吃起來有點似吃冰,不夠幼滑,而且豆腐味也不強,但就真的夠冰凍,也有奶香,若不跟HD的比,其實已經非常不錯。

整頓飯吃得非常高興,縱使本人的壽司不是由大師傅親手弄的,但是其質素要比很多店子的都要好,其他如服務等也是相當不錯,店員以至師傅都很有禮貌,走的時候店員及師傅也有向我道別,這些微不足道的事,也不是很多店子做得到,另也留意到在店內,其實沒有一件事情是讓人得知此店的師傅是在見城學過師的,如果我不是事前已知,實在未能在一頓飯之中,就可以知道人家的來歷,試問人家又沒有滔別人的光,又怎可硬套說人家是假的見城,人家的店名可是鮨辰呢!

The dinner is so expensive and this is unbelieveable. For that price I can go for the real Kenjo place rather than here. Dinner for 2 and we each had around 8 pieces of sashimi/sushi i (nothing really expensive except uni which we only ordered one piece!) plus a bottle of sake and the bill came to $3800 for the bill!!

Came to this place based on a friend's recommendation and the fact that it was marketed as Kenjo's spin off on HK island. My friend and I ordered omakase because we were too lazy to pick and choose. We have been to quite a few sushi places and we do have our favorites but figure we should give this place a try. My friend and I ordered omakase because we were too lazy to pick and choose. We have been to quite a few sushi places and we do have our favorites but figure we should give this place a try.

The quality of food is pretty good but we didn't have anything too impressive as the fish was just normal stuff like hamachi, toro and sole, etc. When we got the bill, we decided that this is not a place for second visit as they charged us for the appetizer, hot food (which we did not order and were not too enthus about it) and even the honeydew at the end!!!! We have been to sushi places with real Japanese chef and we never got charged for appetizer, hot food or dessert!!!

Moreover, the chef doesn't seem to care about hygiene as I was him touching a customer's i-phone and then immediately handled the fish without washing his hands.... I mean, after all we're talking about RAW food here and I thought that was quite gross...

The service is just so so as they didn't even bother changing your plates when you switch between sashimi to sushi which is again something I have not experienced before! I would not recommend this place to my friends and I think this place is overpriced and not worth the visit. There are many friendlier places around the area and they are much better value for money.
