Ok seafood in town
Yuet Wah Wui Seafood Restaurant
2019-02-04
I think it’s my first time eating seafood in the city as we usually go somewhere further out for HK style seafood. My friend was staying in CWB and was short of time, so we decided to give this place a try. It was def. much better than my expectation. We ordered steamed fish, crab, scallops, abalone, etc. Everything was quite ok, but a bit on strong flavor side than letting fresh seafood speak for themselves. Fish was good, cooked to right level. Crab was cooked well, but it was missing that fresh, sweet crab meat taste a bit. Rice and veggie/non-seafood dish were all fine. The price is on high side, but given the location and it’s seafood meal, it’s understandable. Overall, would come back again if venturing out was not an option.…Read More

Good Chinese restaurant
Sheung Hei
2019-02-04
This place is a popular neighborhood restaurant that’s good for a rather quick meal. I have tried their clay pot rice, deep-fried fish and veggie dish, dried shrimps (one in the picture) and dim sum on different occasions. Except for dim sum, all are above average. Dim sum.. nothing special, same as other average restaurants that don’t make their own dim sum.. Their claypot rice has good amount of crispy rice and sauce was good, neither too salty nor too sweet. Eel and sausage (options we chose) were cooked to the right amount. Different types of deep-fried fish sometimes seem to not be on the menu, so it’s better to ask them for what they have. This soy sauce served with fish is so good. Think it goes well with plain white rice as well. Veggie (garlic stem) stir fried with dried shrimps and small dried anchovies is good too. Overall, good choice for a Chinese meal.…Read More

After dinner nearby, my friend and I were looking for Chinese style dessert place. It was a bit hard to find as our search on openrice showed most dessert places in the area serve western style dessert, but we did end up finding this place (thanks to openrice lol). The place is quite small and seemed to continuously have customers, coming after dinner like us.We ordered both soup with rice ball (w/ black sesame) where one was ginger soup and one was tofu one. Ginger soup was a bit too sweet and it would've tasted better if it had more ginger taste, but I guess some people really want sweet only in dessert... tofu soup was quite good. As for the balls, we liked that theirs have quite lots of black sesame inside.Just a regular dessert place, but as service is fast, taste is good, price is reasonable and menu is not short... no wonder why it seems to be popular.…Read More

Came for lunch again!
Cafe Hunan (Koon Wah Building)
2017-10-09
I tried their lunch before, but found that it is the one of the best lunch spots in western district. I came around 12:40 or so and it was almost full that people not in groups were made to sit at tables with high chair (comfort is not the biggest issue here; it's the heat/hot air that comes from outside whenever a customer opens/closes door). I ordered the lunch set: pork with bamboo rice. Pork was quite dry and rice was def. oily from all the fat dripping from pork, but I think the main/highlight of the dish is the bamboo shoots. Bamboo had great texture, peppers were fresh and overall, the dish was good. I think only thing to be aware of is the oil left at the bottom, it gets a bit too greasy and not good at the bottom. The set comes with drink and I wanted soy milk, but they ran out of it. So I just went with coke, but I realised other people were ordering other special drinks and just paying the difference. I should try that next time... anyway, another good lunch. …Read More

Average food
Sapporo Ramen Domon
2017-10-09
It's just an average Japanese restaurant and I didn't expect much, but I think the price could be a bit cheaper as it's in residential area after all. I ordered the grilled fish set, which comes with the followings: grilled fish with side of small salad, steamed egg, seaweed salad, rice, miso soup and chocolate cake. Two worst out of these were: steamed egg and chocolate cake, and I think that is a good thing as they're not the main ones. Miso soup, egg, salad... everything tasted too strongly of pre-made sauces/powder. However, everything else tasted just ok... as in it would be hard for me to remember this restaurant to come back again as nothing stood out. That's why if they had price competitiveness, I could consider going for quick meal again... …Read More

Taste is ok
Noodleholic
2017-10-09
Went for dinner. First thing first, their menu is really confusing. I wasn’t sure if it’s trying to be confusing so Ordered Ribs with noodle in soup, deep fried fish with veggie rice and their signature pan-fried dumplings. Ribs tasted quite bland, but found noodle to be ok. Noodle was all in different shape as it’s apparently hand cut noodle and I think that made it more chewy. Soup had quite strong herbal taste. Deep fried fish with veggie rice was fine too. Deep fried fish had not much texture for fish itself, but they did fry it quite ok. Dumplings however ended up being big disappointment.... nothing special and it even had some preparation issue (however, when we talked to the staff, they cancelled for us right away). It was ok, but think there are better Shanghainese choices in HK...…Read More

I went here for a quick lunch. Ordered lamb curry. I guess curry and naan tastes were just ok. I think they made their curry quite weak, but was not totally bland. But problem was that naan had cockroach... well, in hk restaurants I've seen cockroaches in restaurants before, but they were on table or something. This one was inside naan and moving very slowly... It was not a fully grown one, which made my imagination.... ok, I think I should've been able to cancel, but they took it like it wasn't big deal and all and just changed naan bread. Maybe I was just very unlucky this time...…Read More

Good fish hot pot + v good lamb skewers
修哥魚鍋烤魚店
2017-10-01
Very hard to find... kind of place, but thanks to a friend who likes spicy food as well, I found this place. We ordered their popular spicy fish, and added cuttlefish balls, bread and potato noodle, lamb skewers and beer (dry d). Oh we had one cold appetizer too- think the name was wasabi sth... well quite good, but also on spicy side. Ok, so even though the fish itself is not the type of fish I like, I found it to be not so earthy and matching well to the spices in the hot pot broth. Black beans, onions, spices all blended well to give that addictive spicy taste. We ordered medium spicy, but it wasn't as spicy as expected. When we asked the waitress, she was kind to give us extra spices to add into soup. Cuttlefish ball was chewy, nothing special about potato noodles and bread was very good with its cumin spices. As for lamb skewers, I think they are the best Sichuan style lamb skewers in hk! Somehow, sichuan restaurants in hk don't make them right, either too dry or not enough spices. Beer prices were very reasonable well. If you like those more restaurants with more local feel and like Sichuan style spicy food, you'd def. like the place!:)…Read More

Tasty hot pot

My friends know I like spicy hot pot, so they suggested this place. She said she saw many good comments on openrice. We made a booking for early dinner, but missed it and arrived late around 10:30 or something. Although their last call is quite early (think was 11?), they still let us sit.:)We had to order quickly, but we got everything ordered. Their popular thin potato slices were tasty in spicy soup. Starchiness?/carby things go well with strong spices lol. Their meat was good too- we tried two different types of beef and one type of lamb. Beef was thin and not tough at all. Clear potato noodle was thick, chewy and tasty as well. Actually, I find some spicy hot pots hurt my stomach, but this one didn't, so I guess their ingredients must be clean/better than others. Only minus was that for a hot pot place, their regular beer (qingdao) in small can was expensive......But overall, it was a good late hot pot dinner. …Read More

I've tried this place in their old location and liked it a lot, so decided to check out the new place. The decoration and feel is similar to their old place, very modern Korean feel and comfy. They have outdoor space here too, but for 1pm, I felt too hot to sit outside. I had the braised pork rice and my colleague got curry beef rice. Both sets came with tea and soup. Only needed to add a few dollars for coffee, which was a plus. Nothing too special about tea but I liked how it wasn't those usual bitter tea. Soup was very creamy and had lots of broccoli taste, but the highlight was of course the pork rice. Meat had this herbal taste I like a lot, it's those Chinese herbs? and they call it loi yok or something. Anyway, portion was big and every ingredient complemented each other. Refreshing radish particularly was good with meat.As for my colleague's curry, he said it was tasty. Oh and we shared their popular bibim cake, v good end to the meal. Def. a good lunch option.:)…Read More

Good burger
Burgeroom (美麗華廣場1期)
2017-09-14
After seeing many good reviews, I came to check the place out. Burger was good- buns were nicely toasted, meat patty was juicy, sauce complemented everything well. One burger will make you full, but my friends and I wanted to try the beer and tater tots. Fruity beer is too sweet for regular beer drinkers, but if you like sweet cider, then you'd like it. As for tater tots with blueberry sauce sounded interesting, but we didn't find the mixed sweet and greasy taste to be that good. But as the restaurant name says, go for the burger.…Read More

This chain is popular and everywhere in Hong Kong. I didn't understand why people would line up to get s seat here, but I now understand after seeing how fast your noodle comes out. In 5mins or so, you can get your noodle. Taste is fine. It has different soup bases, so shouldn't be too hard to find something that matches your taste. I ordered numbing spicy and it was quite spicy as in the soup is not really for drinking. Noodles were fine too, not too soft which was good. Oh, there's option of less noodle which was a plus. I liked how there were quite lots of options for toppings. And of course, price is the big draw here. If in need of quick cheap meal, not a bad choice at all.…Read More

Consistently good
Saboten Japanese Cutlet
2017-07-03
I've been to this restaurant a few times some time ago. I remember food was good, so I decided to try again. I've ordered the promotional set that comes with pork cutlet and shrimp cakes. Sets here come with the followings: rice (either white or w barley), miso soup, 2 side dish/ pickles (cucumber and radish) and cabbage salad. Thing that draws people is probably that these.. you can ask for refills. I like the cabbage salad and it's two dressings the most. Waitress will explain to you about the dressings, both are good.Pork cutlet was hit, crispy and juicy as they should be. Sauce was usual tonkatsu sauce, but since they give you lots of sesame, it tasted better than just the sauce. Shrimp cake was ok. Everything was the way they should taste. Oh, and tea is really good too.I will definitely come back when I crave for cabbage salad and pork cutlets.…Read More

Udon afternoon tea set was very small in amount and it had no taste... Soup was very bland and udon was just usual type. But you can add chili etc by yourself. At one area, they have drawer full of condiments (shichimi, red pepper flakes, picked ginger and soy sauce)As for the portion, I thought for the price, it should have at least two more fish cakes... That's because I've found afternoon tea set prices to be quite low. Also, the place was quite messy... but i think that's because of the weather more.…Read More

After workout meal
Healthy Chicken
2017-07-01
This place is good for after workout meal, but the seats are very limited (like 6 or so?). Deco is very minimal, but it's nice for them to provide phone chargers. Service was quick. I ordered chicken breast meal with brown rice and a bit of red rice and red sauce. Chicken breast was ok, but could've been better. Some parts were quite tender, but some not... Veggie amount is good and fresh. Tomato salsa gives veggie more flavor and sauce makes everything quite tasty. I will come back when I need some protein and veggies. …Read More
