Burgeroom
2014-08-09
I'm from California.  We LOVE burgers.  We practically eat them coming out of the womb.  So I had to try Burger Room.  I was sadly disappointed.Wait time was zero minutes, cool.  It was a random time, probably around 4 p.m., but it was a Saturday.  The shop is SUPER small and tables are absolutely crammed in there!  I can't imagine eating in there and trying to move around when that place is full.I ordered the fois gras burger.  Being from America, we don't have fois gras.  I've actually only had it once in my life in the South of France and it was the best thing I've ever put in my mouth in my life.  While I don't agree with the way it's produced, I had to try this decadent looking burger and throw my morals to the side.Side note -- I have no idea why they show you to a table when you walk in when you have to order at the counter.  How confusing? The burger arrives looking beautiful.  Exhibit A:Sadly, it was barely room temperature.  And the burger patty itself was TERRIBLE.  ZERO seasoning on it and it tasted as if it had been... steamed?  Definitely not charcoal-grilled, I'll tell ya that.  I could barely eat it.  It was really disappointing.  It was also so huge that it turned into a big mess after about two bites out of it and I resorted to a knife and fork, eating at a big lump of burger items on a plate. And no napkin?  I know this is Hong Kong and people don't normally get napkins at restaurants but this burger was a MESS.... and therefore so was my face!  Eeek!I would not go here again.  It's a shame because it has such a great menu and really innovative burgers, but their foundation (the burger patty) SUCKS.  Switch to another method of cooking, sear the outside on HOT HOT HOT heat and leave the center medium and SEASON the darn thing for crying out loud... and then maybe we'll talk again, Burger Room.…Read More

THE COFFEE ACADEMÏCS (莊士敦道)
2014-06-02
I've been here many times for coffee, which is REALLY expensive, but is quite good.  If you're willing to pay about double than what you would at Pacific Coffee for a small cup of coffee, then maybe you'll like it too lol.  The spot itself is very cute and nicely decorated with big windows in front, but they also cram like twice as many seats as there should be in there.  It's soooooo busy on a weekend afternoon!I've dined in twice.  Both meals left much to be desired.  First was the breakfast tower.  It is a hefty portion of breakfast offerings stacked up, as the name suggests, in a tower.  A piece of toast serves as the base with spring mix drizzled with vinagrette, slices of tomato, bacon, a sausage, and an egg over easy.  Sounds good, right?  In theory, yes, but it was impossible to eat!!  I just deconstructed it so I had a messy plate of breakfast items that I could actually eat.  I have no idea how they think someone is supposed to eat food stacked like that.  My guess is they didn't, and they just wanted to be cute and do it for sake of presentation.  It was okay, but extremely expensive at over 100 dollars for what it was...  toast, an egg, bacon, and sausage.  Would not order again.I went there today and had THE WORST FISH TACOS I HAVE EVER HAD IN MY LIFE.  They were literally fishsticks in hard taco shells with "mango salsa" on them, which is just diced mango and onion as far as I could tell.  They were TERRIBLE.  the "fish" was cold, and the taco shells were straight up STALE.  Like completely inedible as they were chewy they were so stale!  The "salsa" was REALLY sweet as it was mostly mango and little else.  It was actually quite funny what a complete and total fail this meal was.  And the price, dear god...  the tacos and an iced tea came to $198.  You've GOT to be kidding me.  I think I could make better fish tacos myself.  drunk.  with one arm.As for the iced tea, it's a pretty small glass and cost $42, but I have to say it was DELICIOUS.  I will give credit where credit is due.  In my experience it has been hard to find unsweetened iced tea in Hong Kong so I was DELIGHTED to find it here.  Just a HINT of citrus and so, so refreshing.  I will be ordering this for take-away on a hot day (read: every day lol) many times this summer!But... I WILL NOT be eating there again.  I genuinely hope someone who runs that restaurant reads this.  I am really wishing I had said something to the staff at the restaurant at the time!  Fish tacos?  More like FAIL TACOS!  …Read More
