Yummy BBQ in a chilled out venue
The Roundhouse Taproom
2013-11-01
When we went to Roundhouse this week, it was BYOB as its liquor license won’t come into effect till 2 weeks later (not too crowded for the same reason). Among the three of us we ordered a combo platter and more mains – we tried the pulled pork, the short ribs, the pork ribs and the beef brisket. The meat is all dry-rub and served with a light, red, extremely flavourful barbecue sauce as well as a delightful honey-mustard sauce. My favourite was the short ribs – both ridiculously moist and tender and tasting great on their own and with the sauces. The brisket and pulled pork are also excellent. I wasn’t a big fan of the pork ribs as I prefer the ones drowning in dark bbq sauce, these felt a bit dry to me. And yes, portions are generous. The sides are unique and delicious – the pinto beans are smoky, spicy and an excellent complement to the pristine white bread slices served alongside. The soft white bread really reminds me of Southern meals in the US! The squash puree is decadent and sweet (I am not sure but I think there’s cheese in it?). On your platter, you will also find deep-fried pickles, something I’ve never tried before, served with a very peppery horseradish sauce. It’s the perfect grease-cutting compliment to the meal. Oh and don’t forget to try the pecan pie!Needless to say, I doggy-bagged the leftovers.I also really liked the friendly staff: the waitresses are very good about refilling glasses and making honest recommendations, the person at the door was welcoming, and the manager Jackie was chatty. The place lacks pretense and is genuinely welcoming – something so rare in Hong Kong these days. Can’t wait to go back soon (especially to try the beers!)…Read More

Fine Macanese food in a cute joint in old Macau
A Lorcha
2013-10-16
Cute, quaint portuguese joint in Old Macau serving an extensive menu of well-made dishes. THe bread served with the meal is warm and soft and highly addictive. The port is super cheap and both red and white varieties are lovely. We triedthe octopus salad (strong and oniony but the octopus is really tender and not rubbery at all)the cod cakes (again tastes fresh and flavourful with no fishy smell)the oxtail (stodgy and lovely but huge portion so plan accordingly),the clams with sweet and spicy peppers in a red saffron-y sauce (the sauce is so good you will drink it!)the chorizo (standard)the peri peri chicken (a bit salty but perfectly cooked)Portions were quite large so we struggled to finish ..heheheThe signature dessert Serradura is a small cup of milky custard with a sweet powder on top. It is absolutely delicious in both plain milk and milk+chocolate variations. We shared a bottle of bubbles, 2 glasses of port each and all this food and the bill was still surprisingly low by HK standards. My only issue was the service which was lacklustre. We asked the waiter for bread before our meal (seeing the bread on other tables) and he snapped at us "you have to wait. OKAY? it will come in time" or something to that effect. We really did not appreciate being talked to like we were ten-year old children asking for chocolate before dinner. I don't care if you think you're being funny or whatever. For future reference, the answer to "can we have some bread?" is just "yes".…Read More

Delicious food and great service!
22 Ships
2013-08-21
I had heard that the wait at 22 ships can be quite long so we went quite early (around 6.30) and had a long leisurely dinner. The staff here are super friendly and chatty and don't tell you that you have to leave after xx minutes unlike some new restaurants! We ordered a lot of dishes and each one was excellent.Starters:Marinated olives - classic/deliciousGambas with onion and cilantro - flavourful and perfectly cooked fat prawns with a punchy green sauce (cilantro based)padron peppers with garlic salt - I wanted to try these spanish peppers. they were great but they are not different from the local chile peppers you get in the wet markets (hehe, easy to recreate at home!)Mains:Rack of lamb with eggplant puree - the puree was unbelievable - sweet and smokey. The lamb itself was not that great. Two small pieces and not the tastiest meat but at least it was cooked exactly the way we wanted. And finally, the star of the show - the special for the week - suckling pig. This was the best suckling pig of my life! crispy crackling, soft meat, apple/pear based sauce at the bottom, piquillo peppers and pink peppercorns on top. The very different ingredients married beautifully and tasted like heaven. The portion size was large but it was not difficult at all to finish this masterpiece (which is served in a deservingly gorgeous copper vessel).Dessert: We shared the "texturas de chocolate", which as the name suggests is chocolate in different forms from merengue to icecream to little flakey sweet bits in dark, milk and white chocolate. It was alright. I personally prefer more decadent desserts but this was still a very nice ending to a rich meal.Service: A+. They don't charge service charge here but who can resist generously tipping these nice waiters who check on you, refresh your tapas plates and your water glass regularly without you ever having to ask and giving good recommendations"?Bravo 22 ships!…Read More

Tai Lung Fung
2013-08-20
I had a really great experience at Tai Lung Fung -Hong Kong needs cute bars like this. When we went in, the kitchen was already closed but the chef made an exception for us and let us order anyway! We had the salmon salad (very good!), the potato wedges (classic, can't go wrong) and the chili-garlic-sausages. The sausages are simply amazing! I don't know where they get them from or if they are made from scratch but they are ridiculously good. Juicy, spicy, meaty goodness! The cocktail menu is impressive and they have the classics (your sours, negronis, etc) and they have a special menu which is very well executed.I tried the Lemongrass-tyni as I don't like very sweet drinks and it was perfect. The drinks here are stiff - another point for Tai Lung Fung!I loved the laid back Chinese hipster decor of this bar and found the service to be much better than other bars. (they charge no service charge, so tip generously, people!) When we felt hungry again, the chef actually offered to make us a rib-eye steak with individual bite-sized portions just for us hungry girls. All in all, A-plus!…Read More

Not pizza!
Motorino (些利街)
2013-08-15
We ordered only three dishes here 1. the meatballs - very good - three nice plump ones with a gorgeous red marinara sauce and a garnish of basil. Perfectly done.2. Marinated beet salad - yummy beats with red onions, pickled egg and anchovy. Quite a heady combination but well done. Would be even better with some greens?3. Pizza Colatura di Alici - Ummm this is not pizza. And this is certainly not New York style pizza. The pizza base is cooked without any base sauce - no red marinara, no bianco. WHY?! And then the toppings are put on top of the pizza RAW. Yes RAW, and COLD. Like a salad. I can understand if you do this with arugula leaves or proscuitto but to put raw onions, raw tomatoes, etc is just nonsense. There is no sauce and there are raw, cold vegetables. This is NOT PIZZA! This is salad served on top of bread.Needless to say it felt very difficult to eat and while the crust is delicious, it feels a bit strange and dry and I couldnt finish it. On most of the tables, I saw a huge pile of crusts building up. Never happens in New York people! Also, my pizza had so much chilli oil on it, it was a bit too spicy. They could have just let me decide how much spice to use. I am not saying it wasn't tasty, it was okayish, not horrible and certainly NOT PIZZA.The ambience of this restaurant leaves a lot to be desired - the accoustics are really bad so it feels really loud and noisy. Tables are so close to each other that I was in all the photos that the nieghbouring table took. Service is so-so. I could barely hear the wait staff over the noise. One of them did tell me that we had an option of having raw or cooked pizza and I distinctly said I wanted a warm pizza with melted cheese. WE asked for olives on the side and they said they didn't have any green olives even though there was a gigantic jar of green olives in the shelves where the wines were. Odd.I haven't been to Italy, maybe they make pizza this way there, I don't really know. I do know that there are way better pizzerias in hong kong!…Read More

Best thai food in Hong Kong
Sawali Club
2012-04-13
This is the best thai food in hong kong - not the usual overly coconut, underspiced stuff they serve in Soho. Try the crab, both the regular and the soft shell and of course any and all curries. The tom yum soup is out of this world. In fact, everything I have eaten here is top notch.the only thing I dislike is the toilet paper roll that is used in place of napkins on the table. Who cares though, the place is clean, the staff is really nice and did I mention it is the best thai in hong kong??…Read More
