Eating a bowl of beef brisket noodles on the slope of a backstreet in the bustling Central, is an experience rarely found elsewhere. To many Hongkongers, the re-opening of Shui Kee must be a thrill, especially when more and more decades-old establishments are closed for good. I came here hoping to savor a bowl of flat rice noodles with “ngau saa gwaa”, which is said to be the fourth stomach of an ox. I was a bit skeptical venturing into an alleyway on a rainy day but since many people have been raving about this establishment, I decided to give it a try. Normally, I prefer to sit down and taste the chicken fresh out of the chopping board, however, they currently only do takeaways. My expectations are high given that the restaurant is run by a former chef from the Grand Hyatt hotel and they also use the notoriously famous three yellow chicken, which the freshness of the meat should be guaranteed. The boneless Hainan chicken rice was quite delectable and didn’t disappoint. The meat was very tender and succulent, even the skins were crispy without any greasiness. The chicken fat infused rice was flavorful without a hint of oily texture. We spent an entire hour waiting to try their Michelin-recommended claypot rice and it was worth it, although the lady guarding the door giving out queue tickets to patrons was a bit intimidating. The portion is big and I’m quite impressed with their “lap mei”, particularly the duck liver Chinese sausage. Their deep fried dice fish balls are also surprisingly delirious. A bright and spacious restaurant with good vibes. I came here for their set lunch(not cheap, coffee/tea is not included) and was impressed by their friendly staff and quality service. In terms of the food, the soup of the day was very disappointing which was basically flavored water with onions and mushrooms. The portion of the wagyu beef vermicelli is big and the taste was satisfactory but to be honest with the price of the set lunch, the taste of my main course didn’t surprise me. I was in the mood for dessert that day because it was New Year’s Eve, and I picked something that wasn’t included in the set lunch menu.
