Not my cup of tea
The Butchers Club (蘭杜街)
2015-08-18
After see the doctor in late morning this burger things suddenly occurred to me and hence i walked to Butcher's club in Central, in the hope of shop nearby after ordering takeaway (you know girls). My friend has told me before they only offer aged beef, which is less juicy and more salty than normal burger. Though it does not sound attractive to me, i still decided to give it a try, because this is a really famous res in the neighborhood, and in Central area, there is no fun eating salad/sashimi everyday for a calorie-sensitive human being...I ordered the basic burger though a so-called "secret menu" was provided, but i chose not to order any from them and quickly decided to go with the basic one. Reasons are: a) most are pricey; b) i was not wearing glasses and could barely read the ingredients under dim light; c) i was not comfortable standing next to some fat Caucasians and just want to wrap some food as fast as possible (this is not a discrimination over fat dude, i just dont understand for guys in those shape, how dare they can still eat burger and fries..).After waiting for 7 min or so, I got my burger from a hot waitress. The bummer is that they simply gave me a box (something like McD’s burger box, squared one), which was kind of annoying. By no means can i just hold such a box to walk back my office. I need to hold it in the appropriate gestures to avoid it got crashed... Constructive suggestion there -- at least provide a decent paper package.. even McD offered paper bags!Sitting in front of my desk, I opened the burger and it did not disappoint or surprise me, as I did not expect too much lol. The beef was kind of dry and I double confirmed that aged beef was not my cup of tea. Pickles and cheese are great and I think I can have more, when the thought occurred to me that I shall revisit Big Fernand after the meeting this afternoon. I ate the side of the bun that has butter on (so it was like one third). No famous duck oil fries or otherwise I may suffer from breakout tomorrow.Well, for light taste diner like me, I wont visit there again but I wont judge the quality of the beef either. It is just does not match my taste.…Read More

Very Fun Fusion and Romantic Atmosphere
Aberdeen Street Social
2015-08-17
A good friend owed me a big one and hence offered a free dinner. Free dinner! I am a killer at choosing fancy restaurant, fancy enough to make them unfriend me…. Ok, we still remain friends afterwards. Central area is notorious for overpricing quality (or mediocre) food and PMQ has collected its name recently. A drinking there two months ago proved it has nice atmosphere and hence i booked a table for two. The waiter said we need to handle the table back by 915pm when it must be their peak hour for catering guests who come for drink, but eventually no one kicked our ass despite our staying until 930pm.OK back to food and restaurant. First of all, this res is one of a kind for dating (well, as friends we still pulled it off) -- nice decor, two stories building with romantically dimmed light, very friendly and sweet waiters and waitress working hard to get a cozy seat for me, while no window seats were available they generously offered balcony but I rejected.. (come on, Aug HK night...) Similar to other gourmet, my perception on the menu is that they really do not have a lot to offer. 8 types of starter and main respectively.Starter:Confit and smoked salmon, oyster beignet and caviar; HKD198I do not really understand the word Beignet and expected something fancy, while it turned out to be dough made product and FRIED. I am not making a fuss but fried food has been literally cut off from my diet so I tear the oyster and finished what’s inside. For oyster, the fresher the better, so I can barely make compliment on this one. As for the salmon aside, it is tender enough but a bit of salty, caviar does not have unpleasant smell so I gave 7 out of 10 for the combination. but given the price… well, ok, I didn’t pay so I will shut up.Cannelloni of butternut squash, pine nuts coriander and blue cheese HKD178It is something that looks like pumpkin spring roll but not cloying at all, instead, pine nuts inside give a refreshing scent on the palate, which offset the much flavored taste from the pig we ordered later.Main:We had pork loin and cod (average HKD350 each). The loin is perfectly cooked – you can see the pink layer in the center while the skin is neither too raw nor oily. This is better than the suckling picks I tried in Ole the Spanish res. How I wish we had a glass of Aussie Grenache on hand! Roasted onion is an icing on the cake. I am not an onion guy because I always worried about unpleasant breath afterwards but this one is a bit of sweet and taste like lily petal lol..Cod was just so so, just the normal one you can get in those Kennedy Town restaurants with cost lower than 200. What’s worse, I forgot to tell them to remove high calories sauce (like cucumber mixed mayonnaise; but I can only have olive oil to go with my salad :( .. Mushroom and clam taste great, better than cod itself and I hope it did not contain too much MSG.Dessert:We ordered Blueberry sorbet. I have not had ice cream/sorbet for all most THREE months so anything that is cold and lightly sweet makes me lose judgment. Awesome, in a word. Canned blueberry inside contains too much sugar but sorbet adds balance back. Bonus is that they provided Pre-dessert LOL. The mango flavored sorbet with something like vanilla flavored flakes. Sorry I really can’t tell what it was.I personally favor light tasted, not spicy, refreshing flavored cuisine. Food offered here is my type as long as I do not need to pay. So if you want to have a relaxing date/family chilling out (not too exciting to impress someone), this could be an option. just make sure you got a corner table.…Read More

Barbecue set for two - not enough for guys
JANG
2015-08-13
Not being usually packed during weekdays lunch hour, situated on 18/F of L Place in Central, JANG restaurant sounds like a good choice for a catch up quick lunch. I assume less crowd was due to relatively high price. Looking around, most people are in business attire so the expense shall be claimed under companies! My friend (I will mention about him often in this review) and I were about to go with the lunch set when he noticed the lunch barbecue set for two people at around HKD439 and he was literally drooling... don’t ask me how I found out. We kick started at 12:20pm and need to hit the road by 2pm so we checked with the waiter to see how fast bbq can be served. “15 min at most”, replied by him. Surprised, we placed the order. The starter has always been attractive since 2 years ago, when my first time here. Tofu, dried fish with lentils, my fav kimchi and Chinese sprouts comprised a multi flavored Korean starter. Then came the soup in which I can tell there was turnip, onion and a type of Korean green veggie. The taste of the soup was normal, nothing exciting and I did not even finish it.Then came the barbecue beef together with two strips of asparagus and two slices of idk what (taste like some seafood mixed with flour because it was chewy; no weird smell so dubious as I were, still finished them) . Beef was cooked medium to medium well at most and they did not even ask how we would like to have it (ok it reminds me of a Chinese girl who came from Northeastern part of China when the waiter asked her how she would like to have the steak cooked, she said “7”, which means 70% cooked, or medium well. LMFAO even though we all may have had hard time when learning a new language but I just found it f***ing hilarious). The beef must have been saturated with barbecue sauce but it is too sweet for me... My friend (a French Canadian) spoke highly of that so I started to concern his healthy issue and recommended clinics (ok I went to far). The size of the beef was good for me with arnd 4 – 5 chops; finely cooked and really tender inside. If the sauce is lighter, I will definitely revisit. However, guy friend said he was still hungry after the beef and a whole bowl of rice (white rice, which will raise your GI immediately after lunch and makes you drowsy. Hate it and just had one bite. Now you can tell why I have a smaller belly than whom sitting opposite to me!). I gave my desserts out to him – a mochi with red beans on the top and ice cream inside. God know how much sugar it contains. The waitress is kind of numb because I asked her to refill my glass and she probably did not get me. Ok even if I spoke poor English can’t she at least ask to double confirm what my request was dear?? It is raining today so my mood is blue. Sorry for being furious. All in all, the food is not suitable for me but I believe most people will like it – heavy taste with unique Korean style, less packed and spacious restaurant in L Place 18/F, this is all you need during a lunch hour in weekday!…Read More
