elegant and experiential experience!
AVA Restaurant Slash Bar
2011-09-28
I had never heard of this place except to hear that it is in the same realm as Azure in Hotel LKF as they are opened by the same team. The bubble lift up to the 38/F gives a very nice preview of the view, but nothing compares to their window seating with panoramic views of the harbour and HK side.I was impressed with the fact that they had a "Garden" menu for vegetarians which was probably the largest vegetarian menu I have ever seen in a Western fine dining restaurant. To start I had the "Garlic" which was a creamy soup served hot table side from a tea pot. Very fun to watch and then eat. It was served with their loaf accompanied with a terrine of butter with a top layer of pesto, then sundried tomato, then garlic. For my main I had the Black Truffles served 3 ways. It was served on a tray with 3 porcelain pots to be unlidded like a little surprise. Very tasty and very cute! Dessert I'm told was one of their signatures which was a lemon nut cake. I love lemon curd and it was covered in the stuff.I would definately recommend this place for a special occasion as the view, ambience, and food serving is very experiential and actually makes the evening feel more special. Will be back for the next fireworks show for a great dinner and beautiful view! …Read More

Totally Delicious!!
Delicieux Bistro
2011-07-07
I work down the street and didn't realise this place had been open for 6 months.I saw a sign outside that said "Vegetarian available" so popped in.I was just expecting a regular baguette sandwich with raw veggies but they have a "Lemongrass Tofu with portobellow mushrooms" sandwich which I ordered along with the Cold Vietnamese Spring Rolls filled with tofu, and a lemongrass/mint iced tea. I was there at around 4:30pm and I didn't realise that 2:30pm-5:30pm they offer 30% discount so I only ended up paying $41 for all that. The sandwich was absolutely amazing. Not many places offer tofu/mushroom sandwiches like that. The bread was nicely toasted and buttered and the fresh veggies complemented the tofu and mushies really well.I will definiately be doing lunch here more often!! Very very pleasant surprise and extremely yummy! …Read More

Yummy Pomodoro
Pasta Mio
2011-06-23
On my way home I wanted smth quick to eat and passed by Pasta Mio. Decided to do a quick takeaway Spaghetti Pomodoro. The wait wasn't long but when I went to pay I was kind of surprised that it cost $78 for a small takeway box of spaghetti! Much more expensive than Te so was a bit disappointed.Got home and the pasta was nice and hot- they have a microwave they use in plain sight for some of the baked orders, but thankfully my pasta was boiled fresh, with sauce heated by a pan (smth offputting about paying money at a restaurant and watching them microwave your food....) The spaghetti was really really thick- almost like eating Shanghainese egg noodles. I agree with the other review here that said they could eat it with chopsticks. It was however very tasty- maybe the speghetti cos it was home made was quite thick but I think it actually soaked up the sauce (which was hearty and healthy with a nicely portioned sprinkling of real cheese on top- no parmesan from the bottle). Will definately go back cos the pasta was good, but maybe not so often as it's kinda expensive for a takeaway place. …Read More

Gorgeous Lunch Deals
Lily & Bloom
2011-05-05
Have been to Lily & Bloom a few times for dinner and drinks and was very excited to hear they are now offering lunch and brunch.I've now been twice- the 1st time I ordered a la carte and had the vegetarian couscous, came on a curry sauce and was lovely and fluffy. and a very nice carrot and ginger soup. The 2nd time I went they had vegetarian items on the set menu so I enjoyed a very lovely risotto which came with a beautiful parmesan crisp- it was so good my friend and I asked for extra crisps to which the waiter kindly obliged My friends ordered the famous Bloomburger which actually comes with fries during lunch (usually at Lily it just comes on it's own), and my sister loved the Crab Salad currently on the Set Menu. For dessert I had the Popcorn Creme Brulee which actually came with caramelised popcorn! Buttery yummy goodness. Can't wait to go back for Brunch!…Read More

UGH!
Hyde
2011-03-16
i'm pretty skeptical when it comes to clubs serving food, but i do think dragon-i does a killer dim sum, so was curious as to what hyde's kitchen could offer. after all they advertise an entire lounge floor and have a kitchen. can't be that bad right?2 of our party ordered the set menu, the salad took nearly 20mins to arrive. we played pool to kill the time- but who really has 20mins to wait for a salad when you only get a 1 hour lunch break?i ordered the truffle fries- i've had truffle fries at other lounges in hong kong and am a huge fan so was super excited for some yummy goodness.about 15mins after i'd ordered the fries, i saw a tray at the service station sitting with dirty used plates from the other tables and a full bowl of french fries. i said to my friends "i really hope those aren't my fries". the waitress literally left them on the tray with the dirty plates just sitting out next to our table before picking them up and serving them to us about 5mins later!!! seriously??i tasted about 1 or 2 and i usually don't send food back but how can you really serve someone smth thats been sitting on a dirty tray out in the cold- this isn't a cha chaan tang (i havn't even seen it done there) and there weren't really any other customers, not like she was too busy to see it, she was just walking back and forth in front of the bar!!i sent them back, and she returned a bowl of hot fries about 5mins later- the manager (or some guy who was in charge) asked her right next to our table whats going on with the fries and the waitress just said to him "they complained they were cold". nice customer service.... the fries sucked. they were frozen fries that had been flash fried and you couldn't taste any truffle- there were some black pepper looking bits sprinkled on top which i'm assuming was sposed to be the truffle. for that price i would've rather gone to mcdonald's for some hot and well seasoned food. we got the bill- lunch took 90mins and my friends didn't even get offered their dessert or tea/coffee which was included in the set menu.close down your kitchen hyde- if you're a club, be a club. don't pretend to serve food. …Read More

Yummy Brunch!
Gusto
2011-03-16
after hearing lots about the Gusto brunch i finally made the trip to Happy Valley with some girlfriends for a casual start to a saturday.it was full of ppl when we got there- lucky that we made a reservation as there was 6 of us. we shared a bottle of the sparkling shiraz on promotion (never had sparkling shiraz before) but it was actually quite nice!i ordered a brioche with egg in the hole, topped with mushrooms and melted cheese. it came piping hot served with a frisee salad and it was absolutely divine. i ordered hash browns on the side and they were slightly disappointing as i prefer my hashbrowns a little more cooked and crispy on the outside, but i would definitely make the trip back just for those eggs. very nice atmosphere- not too formal for brunch, but cosy and friendly enough that you could pop in and sit at the bar for a quick bite whilst reading the newspaper or have a long brunch and drinks with friends for a decent price. …Read More

Great for the Lunch Buffet!
Tandoor Indian Restaurant
2010-09-06
The Tandoor lunch buffet was previously one of my fav. Indian buffets in HK, but the last visit I went was 2008 or 2009 and the food was quite cold and it was still around $198+ 10% service charge for the food. When I heard it is now $98 for the lunch buffet had to give it another go. The food was served at a good temperature, and the selection is huge for both vegetarians and meat-eaters. Immediately when we were seated we were given fresh dosas and pani puris which were delicious The buffet food was fantastic - will be reverting back to the Tandoor for their lunch buffet instead of Jashan and Bombay Dreams (the items and variety are less for the same price). Although having said that I would still choose Bombay Dreams over Tandoor for their a la carte selection.…Read More

AWFUL service, ruined a great evening with friends
Prompt Bistro
2010-09-06
I wanted to throw my bf a surprise birthday pool party and after doing research I felt like Prompt was the perfect place to book a poolside table and went ahead with booking 1 room at Le Meridien too. When I initially called, the person who picked up the phone told me if you made a table reservation at the restaurant you could use the pool. Perfect for me, and so I went ahead and invited all my bf's friends. The table was lovely, right by the pool and quite serene. The food took a really long time. We ordered a few of the different pizzas, some salads, some french fries etc. The pizzas and french fries were really yummy albeit a bit overpriced but the wait was ridiculous as the restaurant was practically empty. When we got up to get in the pool, the pool attendent tells me I'm allowed only 4 ppl with my room reservation. I repeated what Prompt had told me over the phone she said it wasn't possible I tried to remain calm and asked to speak to the Prompt manager, who said there was nothing he could do, then he got the Hotel Duty Manager who also asked "Is there anything else we can do? I see you're celebrating a birthday blah blah blah". I asked yeah can you please make an exception and let a few more ppl from my party get in the pool that's the only reason we booked a room here and threw the party here and she said no. We asked for the bill so we could retreat to our room to try not to spoil the rest of the evening. When they finally brought it they realised they forgot to charge us for the birthday cake, and had to take it away to reprint again. Another wait. I would love to stay at this hotel again, the ambience is lovely- just wish they'd work on Prompt so I can get some decently timed food and enjoy a lovely evening.Btw, the next afternoon we went back to the pool (just the 2 of us as quota would allow) and ordered a pizza trying to give them another shot. We waited nearly 25mins for the pizza, and there was no one in the restaurant even though they had a huge buffet set up- no one was there. *sigh* its such a shame, could be a really great spot if they get some half decent staff training…Read More

Blue Smoke Bar-B-Que
2010-08-15
So I'm a vegetarian and my boyfriend always takes me to vegetarian restaurants so I thought it would be nice to treat him to a nice meaty meal.We had heard mixed reviews on Blue-Smoke mostly that the food was amazing, but others that it was horrible. As soon as we were seated we were served a complimentary table dish consisting of deep fried mac n cheese balls, tempura fried okra, and pickled watermelon skins. The pickled watermelon skins are smth I'd never heard of before and never would've thought to like, but they tasted amazing! In combination to the mac n cheese balls and the fried okra we were exremely please before we ordered, and even asked for a 2nd plate of the snacks to which our waiter obliged. For starters we ordered the nachos (with beef on the side) and my bf ordered a bowl of the chilli. The nachos had barely any cheese on them, and very little tomatoes or salsa so ended up being quite dry. The beef brisket on the side my boyfriend said was cold- as if it had just come out of the fridge. Perhaps they usually place the beef on the nachos and grill it with the cheese and so it's usually hot- but cos we'd ordered it on the side, maybe they'd forgotten to heat it up. For the chilli my boyfriend was extremely happy, said it was really good with lovely flavours and served hot. When our mains arrived- I ordered a Southwest Salad, and him the pulled pork. For sides we chose the mac n cheese and the creamed spinach. The salad arrived with bacon on it which hadn't been listed on the menu so I had to send it back and ask them to return it vegetarian. The chef himself came out with the 2nd salad and asked us if our food was OK which I was really impressed with and really nice of him. The salad turned out to be very nice- with whole avocados (usually restaurants skimp on the slices). The mac n cheese was nice. Baked with lots of gooey cheese and served hot which I thoroughly enjoyed. The creamed spinach was served fresh from the oven and not what I expected from a typical creamed spinach- there was barely any cream, but it was topped with melted cheese which gave it a really nice texture and flavour. Unfortunately when my bf ate his pulled pork, again he said the meat was cold. The flavours were nice but it was served unheated but we were too embarassed to say anything, as we had already sent the salad back. When we made the reservation the hostess informed us we could use our uBuyiBuy coupon for the discount, but when the bill came there was some discretion as it was not valid on that day. Our waitress later came with the and said they made an exception for us and we could use the coupon as the hostess had already told us we could, which we appreciated. All in all, for me personally the Southwest Salad, the mac n cheese and the creamed spinach were delectable. I would go back just for the pickled watermelon and fried okra as they were delicious and I havn't seen that anywhere else in Hong Kong. For my boyfriend, the chilli was delicious, but the braised beef and pulled pork were served cold and shortly after returning home he was stuck in the toilet for a few hours- no doubt from cold meat. We would give this place another try, because the service was obliging but probably not for full price in case the meat turns out cold again. I would go for the vegetarian options, but my bf would be iffy about ordering the meat (odd thing to say about a BBQ restaurant I know!)We understand that they are newly opened- but come on, who serves meat cold like that, you'd expect more from that price. Maybe we'll give this place another try in a few months and see if they at least learned how to serve hot meat. …Read More
