High quality and great wait staff
Superdon (Lockhart Road)
2018-04-21
My partner and I came on a whim whilst passing by, it looked pretty full but no lines at around 6:30pm. The waiters were very friendly and knew English well which was a lovely surprise. The selection of food itself looked pretty unique, I’ve eaten rice bowls many times but something about this one looked really good and different. Although I would say that the price range was more than I’m used to paying for a sushi rice bowl. I had a grilled fish bowl and my partner chose his own fish to add to the rice. On the menu they marked all the ingredients very clearly, however when it arrived I did notice some things I didn’t recognise, some kind of yellow vegetable and brown thick sticks, I’d never seen something like that before and neither had my partner. I wouldn’t recommend eating these things like we did, they tasted awful and had to remove them straight away, I’m not sure whether they were for eating or to add flavour? The rice bowl itself was very nice, the only thing I would recommend to them is not putting the wasabi and ginger (and unidentifiable vegetables) directly on the rice as the flavour seeped into the rice and ruined the flavour and I had to eat around it. The quality of the ingredients were quite good, better than any other similar restaurants, so I would pay more for this rather than going to a cheaper restaurant and being disappointed. …Read More

Good alternative for Hong Kong
琥酌
2018-04-21
Me and my partner came back from Japan recently and we wanted to see if Hong Kong had any good alternatives to the beef katsu we had there (which was 10/10 by the way).We came to this restaurant without booking and it was ok to just walk in and sit down, there wasn’t many people for 7pm. I would recommend booking if you’re eating with more people, however. The waiters were really friendly and the atmosphere was good and quiet. They have better service than most restaurants I have been to in HK, they even waited until everyone finished their meal before cleaning the table, which is really appreciated. They were also really quick with refilling my tea which was nice. So, I had the beef salad and my partner had the wagu katsu. My salad was ok, I would have said that I would have liked more of a salad than what I got, it was quite a small portion but it could have been an appetiser, I wasn’t sure. The hot plate that my partner used to cook his beef didn’t get very hot, but he complained a lot about the authenticity. I tried it and think that the wagu didn’t have much flavour, I didn’t really like it compared to what I’ve cooked at home before. The same goes for the beef in my salad, which was very thin slices of beef. It wasn’t bad but it wasn’t good either.Overall I would say that the food is pretty unique for HK and an alternative who have tasted the real thing in Japan. However I would say the flavour isn’t really there in the beef, and because of that I would say it’s a bit too expensive for what you get. …Read More

Fast food but...
Wing Chun Vietnamese Food Restaurant
2018-04-08
I’ve been to this restaurant 3 times now. The food itself is alright, it has a homemade taste about it, it’s not a chain restaurant and it doesn’t taste like it either. The food comes out pretty fast so there’s not a long wait time, but I suppose that means the food is pre-cooked, which isn’t the best. The hygiene however isn’t good at all. I looked around at the floor and it was so dirty, it looked like they hadn’t been cleaned in years. I would hate to think how dirty the kitchen is. The staff also put all the filthy bowl and cutlery directly behind the tables in a big bucket, and leave them there for quite a while. This attracted a lot of flies whilst I’ve been there on my last occasion, I couldn’t even eat my noodles in piece without swatting away a fly from my face. Which leads on to my latest visit. Both me and my fiancé ate noodles, I had the beef Pho and he had a sort of spicy noodles with no soup. Half an hour after we left we both felt awful, our stomachs bloated and a sharp pain. He has recovered (4 hours later) but I’m still in a lot of pain and toilet issues. I wouldn’t go here again, I’m too worried about my intestinal health. Who knows what it was about those noodles, hopefully it wasn’t the hygiene problems in the restaurant causing it, but it definitely was the food as we had nothing else that day. Oh well, I hope no one else goes through that if you do read this and decide to brave it. …Read More

Good live band, average food
The Live House
2018-02-25
The atmosphere is quite good here, the room is lit with mood lighting, and surrounding the tables are an odd collections of quirky decorations (like a suit of armor). The food itself is pretty average. My table ordered the black truffle and cream sauce risotto, which was nice. We also had the pork knuckle which was more fatty than others we’ve had, we couldn’t finish it because the fatty taste was too much. They didn’t have an English menu for the food so I had to have my fiancé translate everything for me, although the drink’s menu is in English. I’m not sure why they couldn’t translate the food as well, I would write it up for free if they needed someone. The food was a little overpriced for the quality of the food I believe. We ended up spending $500 with a 20% discount but I don’t think what we ate was worth that much (including drinks).I ordered a draught Asahi too but it tasted very strange and not like Asahi at all, maybe the barrel was bad. Also. The service was very good, however I couldn’t distinguish the servers from the other customers. Maybe they should be wearing a uniform or a more formal outfit so they can be recognised …Read More

What a lovely surprise in a small area like Prince Edward. This cafe is definitely my favourite in the area, I live just down the road and I’ll be coming here frequently. The staff speak English primarily, and also Cantonese, it’s nice to hear someone speaking English in this part of Hong Kong. I ordered the half tray fries with blue cheese dipping sauce, I was given a lot for what I ordered and also an additional sauce as well as the one I ordered, I was very happy! The decor was just up my street, very contemporary, cartoonish, Japanese, vaporwave sort of aesthetic. …Read More

Simply delicious
Channel 3 Tapas Bar & Restaurant
2017-12-14
I didn’t expect anything of this restaurant, I have had asked passed it a few times and never gone in. I’m very glad that I finally dined at this restaurant, it was a very pleasant surprise. It’s quite surprising to see a tapas restaurant in Prince Edward but it was very delicious compared to a lot of restaurants close by. Me and my partner first had the mussels (in some sort of sauce, I don’t remember) and the embaladas. The mussels were extremely lovely, so fresh, and the sauce was so complimentary, it is definitely a recommended dish. The embaladas were nice as well, they were like little croquettes, they were potatoes with ham and cheese which was amazing. We also had chicken and chorizo risotto, which I don’t think went well together in my opinion, but others might like it. The risotto itself wasn’t the best but it was good enough to eat. The atmosphere was fantastic, lovely decor and lovely waiters too, so friendly and tried their best to speak to me in English.…Read More

Absolutely fantastic and authentic
Koh-I-Noor Indian Restaurant

I’ve been looking for an authentic curry restaurant ever since I’ve moved to Hong Kong, and I’ve finally found it.Everything about this place is great. Bar the location, the restaurant itself is beautiful inside with low lighting and modern decor. It’s a little small but not confined. We had some Tsingtao which was pretty reasonable in price, and we ordered some plain rice, butter chicken curry, and also plain naan. The service is the best in Hong Kong, everyone is so friendly and happy to recommend a dish based on what you’re looking for. The chicken curry was creamy and tasted of a delicious tomato dish, it went perfectly with the rice and naan, which were also perfectly cooked. My fiancé and I are planning to come back regularly to try a different curry each time we come. I would recommend for anyone missing an authentic curry to come here, the taste is amazing and the people are super friendly!…Read More

One Dim Sum (Tung Choi Street)

Me and my fiancé queued up for this restaurant in the pouring rain, they estimated an hour’s wait so we returned at that time, they estimated another half an hour. We just ordered takeaway after that as we live nearby. The first thing I noticed is that they had a lot of empty tables that weren’t being filled, in fact it took on average 10 minutes for a table to be seated. The efficiency isn’t the best for that caliber of restaurant, I expected better for the amount of people waiting in line. Pros:- Takeaway was pretty fast, it only took 10 minutes for us to get our food.- The menu was in many different languages, although some were still in Cantonese, eg. chiu chow, I’m not sure what that’s meant to be.- The char siu bao (pork bun) was pretty delicious. They were huge and the char siu inside was really tasty, there was bold flavours and the bao itself was bouncy and soft. - The har gau was also great, there was a lot of prawn inside which was very delicious.Cons:- The beef balls were pretty soggy, the taste was ok but the amount of water was in there broke any taste down. Very strange texture. - The fried egg dumplings were very hard, the taste was very sweet, much more than any other restaurant, not to my liking. Also there was very little filling inside. - The har cheung fan (prawn rice dumpling) was extremely disappointing, in the past it has been one of my favourite foods and I expect a lot from it. Firstly, there wasn’t any prawn inside the dumpling at all, what little there was of the dumpling was sprinkled with spring onions and topped with a small amount of tiny, fishy smelling prawns. The smell and taste was so bad I couldn’t even eat it. Really disappointing compared to other restaurant. - The lai wong bao (custard bun) was also disappointing. The bun itself was ok, it was soft and tasty, but the custard inside was extremely thick. It was more eggy and less sweet than I like, even my fiancé didn’t like it and couldn’t finish it. In conclusion, in my experience it really isn’t worth the hype. There was a few things that were really delicious but not enough for the restaurant to have this amount of people queuing for so long. It really isn’t worth it. …Read More

Not my most ‘magical’ experience
9 3/4 cafe
2017-11-02
I was a little disappointed going into the cafe. I didn’t expect a lot because I knew it would be small however I seemed to notice it was more Halloween themed than Harry Potter themed. The main room has Halloween pictures and decorations everywhere, with a few brooms on the wall and wands also. There is a display of cakes and desserts which are also Halloween themed, which was rather disappointing. There is a small room to the side, however, which has a more Hardy Potter themed experience. There are candles floating above the tables, the sorting hat on the book stand, and Hogwarts houses candles on the tables (although on further inspection it was also Halloween themed). I was given a drinks menu which had lots of pictures on it, however it seems that they have no English menus printed out so I had to try and read from the Cantonese menu. The drinks were easy because of be pictures and the waitress was very helpful in English. The food menu was a lot trickier, there was so indication to what the food might be in English so if you don’t go with a Cantonese speaker then I don’t know how you can order. My fiancé and I had the oxtail, and lamb shanks. They were both pretty mediocre. The oxtail was pretty boney with little meat and the lamb shanks were a bit cold and over seasoned. Plus they used instant mash instead of real potatoes. Although I didn’t really expect much from the beginning, I realised that it was probably just a gimmick and not because it was an amazing place to go. I would recommend to go with small children who like Harry Potter or Halloween, they’d probably get the most out of it rather than adults. …Read More

Ramen Kureha
2017-10-16
My fiancé and I were regulars here when I had never tasted ramen, we came here because it was cheap and good. Recently we have been reaching out and going to other, more expensive places, which have been delicious. Coming back to this place has showed me how OK it is. It isn’t bad, it isn’t very good, it’s just OK. The taste of the broth tastes very homemade, you can taste the chicken stock used in the base. Which is not saying it’s a bad thing, but it’s not as thick or as tasty. I get very soft noodles but the ones here get stuck together very easily, they’re a bit tough. The egg is also different, it isn’t as runny as others I’ve had. I’m used to breaking it open and mixing the yolk in with the broth but this one was pretty cooked, and it just wasn’t my style. In conclusion, it’s ok if you just want something quick and easy, but if you want something authentic and amazing then probably go somewhere more expensive. …Read More

A hidden surprise
Pazzeria Italian Brewery
2017-10-10
Me and my fiancé came here by chance after our food reservations were changed suddenly, we just happened to have spotted it and the promise of pizza, cheese, and beer lured us in. Sitting down, the atmosphere was really lovely, quite chilled out and romantic. The lighting was dim and there was old-school music quietly in the background, just the way I like it! The servers really surprised me; it’s difficult to find service staff in restaurants who are genuinely friendly and want to talk to you, I felt really welcome there, and they even recommended me a craft beer from a brief description of what I liked. I was really impressed. I ordered the Pale Ale, which was light and sweet, and easy to drink, whereas my fiancé ordered the Django which was more malty. We ordered a margarita pizza which was lovely, it wasn’t enough to share, maybe have the pizza with a side dish, and I would rather it have more cheese, but that’s because I’m obsessed with cheese. Overall it was a great experience; next time we would want to sample more of the dishes. We would like to go for a cheese plate and some of the cold cuts which looked delicious! …Read More

BEST burger in HK
Beef & Liberty (加州大廈)
2017-09-18
My partner and I come to Beef and Liberty at least once a month because there really is no other place like it. I've eaten a lot of burgers from all over the country and further but nothing compares to the burgers here. The simple but flavourful burgers really are the best around, I usually get the cheeseburger which comes with caramelised onions and I finish it in under 5 minutes. In fact I'm still at the restaurant writing this review waiting for my partner to finish his burger, I can't help it, it's just that good! The burger almost melts in the mouth, with a soft yet sweet taste from the onions. You can also get the burger cooked however you want too, I always go for rare and not many places do that correctly and to my taste. I can't say much more, this is, and will continue to be, my favourite restaurant in Hong Kong. It's reasonably cheap, caters for everyone for every occasion, and simply amazing. …Read More

Not worth the hype
峰
2017-09-16
Me and my partner came here as we live nearby and always see how crowded it is. It looked like a really popular place to eat but we realised it wasn't a cheap place, this gave us high expectations; surely it must be pretty amazing to be so popular whilst maintaining their prices? The interior is nicely decorated, it has an oriental and Japanese decor, but what we realised was Taylor Swift was playing in the background whilst ruined the atmosphere. The menu is Chinese, Japanese, and English inclusive, however the English is mostly just the Japanese so there is no way of actually telling what a dish is unless you know its Japanese name. The Chinese is very descriptive so that's fine. We ordered a few dishes, some salmon sashimi, both regular and fatty. We also ordered the prawn tempura, and some sea urchin and salmon sushi to accompany it. I noticed that the salmon tasted like it was bought cheaply at a supermarket, very common and not special at all. The fatty salmon was indeed fatty but a very small amount for the pricing. The tempura was very tasteless and without flavouring at all, the prawn inside was a large amount however. Furthermore, the sushi rice was sparse and the meat on top was thin, a very small amount. The Asahi we bought was, in comparison, very cheap and tasty, but how can you get pre-bottled beer wrong?Altogether we paid almost $400 for not a lot of food, we were still left very hungry and we went to McDonald's afterwards which was much better. We can find cheaper and better quality alternatives in Mong Kok, which we will go to next time instead. …Read More

Brooklyn

For somewhere that advertises itself on western food it certainly isn't that. When I looked at the menu I could tell there wasn't anything special about this place; I assumed it was an American restaurant but nothing inside suggests this. Our waitress was rude, the window seating was difficult and obstructing, and the menu looked boring and created from someone who went to America once or saw an American restaurant on TV. I let my partner choose what he wanted from the lunch menu. The menu wasn't very clear, in English or Chinese, we couldn't decided if it was a tea set or separate. He ordered the 'combo starters', whatever that is, and the BBQ chicken salad. The starter was rather large and filled with salad, we wondered if the main course was necessary as it turned out to be the same thing but with chicken. There was also some chunks of beetroot and corn in there but that wasn't described on the menu and neither of us like them. He ended up leaving most of it as the lettuce was pretty tough and unappetising. Before we left we kindly told the waitress about the salad and suggested that she told the chef about it, in case the food was stale, but she seemed like she didn't care and just walked off. Overall I pretty strange experience, wouldn't go again, I think we expected more from a restaurant in Moko Mall. …Read More

Coffee Talks
2017-09-07
My fiancé and I moved into the area and went into the coffee shop on Sunday as everywhere else was full. I wasn't expecting much because my experience with food in these places have been poor and tasteless.I ordered a prawn, mango, and avocado salad, and my fiancé ordered a full breakfast. To my delight both were big portions. The taste more than exceeded my expectations, the salad was the best I've ever tasted, I finished it all! The prawns were cooked with the shell so the taste was fresh and juicy.I also had a mango yoghurt smoothie and my fiancé had a coffee, which were pretty good too.Overall a very good experience.…Read More
